Pilots lock down cockpit over praying passengers
LOS ANGELES – Pilots on an Alaska Airlines flight locked down the cockpit and alerted authorities after three passengers conducted an elaborate orthodox Jewish prayer ritual during their Los Angeles-bound flight.
Airline spokeswoman Bobbie Egan says the crew of Flight 241 from Mexico City became alarmed Sunday after the men began the ritual, which involves tying leather straps and small wooden boxes to the body.
FBI and customs agents, along with police and fire crews, met the plane at the gate at Los Angeles International Airport.
Airport police say two or three men were escorted off the plane, questioned by the FBI, and released. No arrests were made.

12. why would they feel a need to do this on the plane?
Seems as if it was done for show.

69. There are prayer rooms at airports for this.
If they were muslim it wouldn't be tolerated, right? Is the jewish faith that unbending that it doesn't tolerate any change in "the rules?"
And yes, it is for show--if you do it in front of a captive audience who have no choice but to watch, then it's for show. If the people have a choice to move away then no harm, no foul. They could have prayed before or after the flight if they had agreed that it was ok.
BTW, I seriously doubt that God gives a flying hoot that they are exactly on time, as somewhere on the planet their is a time difference.

96. And all they would have to do is inform the airline and their fellow passengers.
When you fail to communicate, your communication tends to be misinterpreted.

18. Because everyone knows that the best place for an elaborate religious ritual
is in coach class of a fully seated 767... :eyes:
Who involved DIDN'T overreact, from the prayers, the pilots, etc?

59. New rule. If you are going to do something besides pray silently in your plane seat..
you need to let the folks around you know what you are doing. Educational, respectful and wise.
The powers that be have many of the public scared of their own shadow and you will never get everyone to know all religious rituals.
A little common sense here, please.

regalia and praying in public let alone on a plane. These idiots wanted to make a scene. I don't buy their piety BS.
It's possible they were praying because they'd just heard about the brutal murder and mutilation of an Israeli family, to include CHILDREN.
Sarge, H5 for the win. IMO, you're dead on.
I find it impossible for every day people to know about all the rites and religions of the world at any time or any place.
Humans have to be educated in their own faith that there is a time and a place to hold their rituals, and one place is not on an airplane full of 200 or more passengers that have no idea what they are doing. A plane full of Europeans may become a bit fearful if 10 Haitians aboard the plane decide to light candles and do a Voodoo service.
Unless the plane is going down I do not expect a Nun to begin to read her rosary out loud, or the Baptists to start shouting Hallelujah.
OK then and only then with death immediate do I expect to hear Tibetan Chants, over my own cry to Save us Lord.
A time and a place, Airplanes , trains and buses are not the time unless death is near to practice anyones faith.
When did faith become a public affair, is faith not a covenant between ones self in GOD ?
I have to take offense at the implication that voodoo is either a religion [it isn't, it is a long dead tradition like paganism, that was briefly revived by the Duvaliers], or a practice common in Haitian people.
My girlfriend is first generation American, her father and most of his siblings immigrated to the US from Haiti.
All but about 10% of Haitians are Christian.
BTW have you ever been to a Baptist church that believes in exorcism, of talking in Tungus and the snake handlers???

There are several Baptist churches in this area that speak in tongues, and though snake handling has been banned in the state, it's still done. They usually only get caught when someone dies from a snake bite.
According to the article, the men were Orthodox Jews. Wouldn't they have been wearing yamulkes? I don't know of any other religion that wears them.
I think their prayer shawls, which they most likely had on if they were adding the "little boxes"...also have Star of David on them.
Seems odd to me, that pilots and flight attendents in today's world, wouldn't recognize a yamulke, a prayer shawl, or a Star of David.
If they were Orthodox Jews, yes, they would have been wearing kippot, since any other sort of headwear would be a tad unwieldy in coach.
And tzittzit too, but if they were seated, they may not have been visible to the other passengers.
Not to mention the high likelihood that they had peyos [long unshaven side-burns].
I figured the sideburns too, but a lot of guys have those...so that might not be as distinguishable.
I still think the flight attendants and pilots would have known, and allayed the "fears" of the other passengers.
Hmmm. So now it's Christians and Jews being profiled. And the Muslims are still breezin' right through security.

Da JOOOOOOOOOs on planes are nothing. These are the Zionists you have to watch out for:
:-)
They are such hypocrites. I can't wait for their outrage when the same thing happends to a Muslim again. They are all made from the right timber to destroy individual liberty. DUmmie/Muslim/socialist/fascist all allies in the end.
I am glad you popped that one. Been thinking it since the thread began. Everytime I saw that thread title, I kept seeing Mel Brooks. I know, I know. Bless me Father for I have sinned. I pray for the pygmys in New Guinea.
