Low-flow toilets cause a stink in SF

San Francisco's big push for low-flow toilets has turned into a multimillion-dollar plumbing stink.
Skimping on toilet water has resulted in more sludge backing up inside the sewer pipes, said Tyrone Jue, spokesman for the city Public Utilities Commission. That has created a rotten-egg stench near AT&T Park and elsewhere, especially during the dry summer months.
The city has already spent $100 million over the past five years to upgrade its sewer system and sewage plants, in part to combat the odor problem.
{snip}
Gee, imagine that, the flow's too low. And lets not even begin to thing what folk in San Fran may be trying to flush.
I can just see the guy who played the black lawyer on Seinfeld doing this one... Who told you to go to with low flow? Didn't you now when you go you need mo flow? :-)
-
Not enough water to float the solids......but don't worry, your government is working on an even DUmber solution to the government created problem.
-
Speaking from personal experience, the low flow, "hard to clog" toilets aren't hard to clog....... I wish the Government would just BUTT out of people's "business".... :-)

Now officials are stocking up on a $14 million, three-year supply of highly concentrated sodium hypochlorite - better known as bleach - to act as an odor eater and to disinfect the city's treated water before it's dumped into the bay. It will also be used to sanitize drinking water. ...

Who knew there were such things as unintended consequences. :sarcasm:

They dump it raw and untreated? How do they get away with that? And the bleach is hell on the microbes that are supposed to break it down, and can't be that good for all the cute marine life.

The comments are :lmao:
Low flow toilets are wonderful. I now only flush 5 times to get that poop down. Then another 5 times to get the toilet paper down.
Just take a dump on the sidewalk, the city seems cool with that, no water needed. If you dont think so just watch the homeless they use the sidewalks as toilets all the time and nothing happens to them. The city council seems to encourage it, so do your part for the environment and join in the no water movement.
Well at least you City dwellers can still cry about the East Bay to make you feel better about living in a sewer.. SF residents -- way to live up to the reputation of being "dirty, smelly, hippies"..
This makes me . . . pleased. One thing to be said: Prior Planning Prevents Pi$$ Poor Performance. You libs out there couldn't think your way out of a wet paper sack. Consequences indeed!
Thank you Federal Government (Al Gore) the Inventor of the Internet and the requirement for low flow toilets. I always knew he was full of sh*t. This just proves it.
Low flow was mandated into law in 1994 by GHW Bush.

Liberalism = the mental disorder.

Once again SF has been the source of shit :bird:

For once, I gotta side with the environut "eco-blogger."
A Don't Bleach Our Bay alert has just gone out from eco-blogger Adam Lowry who argues the city would be much better off using a disinfectant like hydrogen peroxide - or better yet, a solution that would naturally break down the bacteria.

A DUmmie with a moment of clarity called it Stalingrad by the bay. I like that :rotf:

We have low flow toilets at work, and they can be disgusting. A couple flushes seem to be necessary on a regular basis, and there are few things more disgusting than walking in a stall and discovering that the previous occupant should have flushed another time or two :censored:

Tell you what's even worse...waterless urinals...damn...the smell.
Encountered my first one about 3 weeks ago and I can still smell it whenever it crosses my mind.

Well, you are in California after all.
Every office I've ever worked in had jet-engine sounding toilets. Gotta love that sound rather than the crap ones at home. Pun intended.

Sometimes, when I'm REALLY clogged, I'll go to WALMART and use their bathrooms. Damn, sometimes, I think that when I flush the toilet, it's going to suck me down, too!!

This seemed appropriate. All good stuff here, but the key portion is from 3:00 (or 4:07 if you're in a hurry and don't care for a fuller context) to 4:40.

We have to remember this whole load of Algore's was based on sea levels rising which would have made the entire scheme flush but since Climate Gate broke and the truth hit the fan now the sea isn't rising, dammit.
