Title: Times change as Bob Dylan wins Pulitzer
Post by: bijou on April 09, 2008, 04:44:06 PM

Quote
Bob Dylan, singer, poet and one of the heroes of the Sixties generation, has been given a Pulitzer Prize. Dylan is the first rock artist to win the award, and was given his honorary Pulitzer for his "profound impact on popular music and American culture" at a ceremony in New York on Monday.

In the 65 years since the Pulitzer prize for music was launched, judges have tended to favour classical music, and, more recently, jazz. Previous recipients of the music Pulitzer include jazz icon John Coltrane and composer George Gershwin. Rock was dismissed as barbaric and even subversive - but it seems times are a-changing. Pulitzer official Sig Gissler said Dylan's special citation "reflects the efforts of the Pulitzer board to broaden the scope of the music prize". The 66-year-old singer was recognised for his "lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power".

Wow, I'm a big fan. At least of his 500+ non-"protest" songs anyway.  :-)

That's two Pulitzer Prize winners I can gladly support. (about time)

"Positively 4th Street" is, quite simply, the greatest rock song ever.  Not just the words, but that taunting Hammond organ was just brilliant.

One of my favs. Dylan is the master of the killer love song. (and love lost songs) I'm partial to Shelter from the Storm myself.

Another great one!  Don't forget "All along the Watchtower."

I am afraid if we start listing his great songs, we will run out of thread space! ;)

Yeah we would for sure.

I started a music thread  just for cover songs a little while ago but one could easily fill up pages with nothing but Bob Dylan songs or even pages and pages of nothing but Dylan covers. LOL
