---

Lawrenceburg police and the Department of Children's Services are investigating what happened at this sleepover. After an interview with WTVF Tuesday night, Smith the boy's mother was surprised to find she could be at fault.

"They're looking into a lack of supervision charges against me, for allowing my child to spend the night at a friend's house," Smith said.

That investigation is still in the very early stages. As of Tuesday night, the case worker had not interviewed the mother of the boy accused of setting Whalen's shirt on fire.

Seriously. WTF????

The boy thinks his friend doused him in cologne and then set his shirt of fire. When he realized his shirt was burning, he tried putting out the flames and fell down a flight of stairs and landed at the feet of several adults, setting the carpet on fire,  WTVF reported.

"They grabbed whole lots of water throwing it on the carpet. Then all they could find for me was Dr. Pepper, thrown on me," the boy said.

Parents partying?  Did some kids partake of the booze?

I could sort of see charging the mother with something if she beat the crap out of those adults, but maybe not even that.  Hope she files a civil suit.

There were 12 other children at this "little sleepover", something the mother was not aware of when she dropped her son off. He was being picked on the entire night before he was set on fire, because he has a form of autism. The mother at this sleep over was possibly doing drugs in front of the children which would explain why she decided to pour water on her carpet FIRST and then pour Dr. Pepper on the child burning alive in front of her! She didn't even have the balls to call 911 for this kid, and she had the nerve to ask his mother if he could take Ibuprofen when she called!

I don't have kids, but if one of mine (nieces, nephews and god-children) had this happen to them, that woman would be praying that would be all she would get.  Takes a lot to earn my wrath, this one would get you on the fast track pronto.

I remember sleepovers and they did pranks on people who slept, but this one is over the top. Those kids who did it sound like psychopaths. Those kids who did it sound like the next Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold.

My parents were paranoid.  I didn't spend the night at another kiids house until I was 12 and his freakin' cat sat on my chest the whole night poking at me.

And I shall send them straight away to my brother, as I have a role as the wicked Auntie, and I perform it well.  O-)

Well now I see why the cops might be lookin' at her for some sort of neglect. Doesn't sound like this kid shoulda been goin' anywhere the way she describes his condition.

It also doesn't sound like she knows this other child's mother at all! No way would my kids go to someone else's house if I weren't completely familiar with them and their habits. Ibuprofen for 2nd and 3rd degree burns? This lady was tryin' to cover somethin' up beyond just her little hellion!

I think back on some of the things I did on "sleepovers" at that age and wonder what would happen after the fact should something have gone wrong.

For example when a bolt-bomb goes off and the 14" long 1 1/2" diameter bolt embeds itself in a head rather than goes whirring past your ear or lands on the roof of the house a block away.

I know for a fact I'd have been beaten before I was grounded - assuming I wasn't the one injured.

Wasn't like the parents had much ability or indeed inclination to constantly monitor what we were doing out of their eyesight. All the better for us we thought at the time.

Of course - no one would have ever done something so callous and idiotic as light a dude on fire.

My Side of this,  the boy was 12 years old and had been so protected all his life that the parents were trying to let loose a bit and intergrate himself into the world he would soon move into.

A sleep over with a friend was a good start, but the parents had no idea there would be 14 other kids there.

What is a parent to do do when their children special needs or not want to have a sleep over with friends.    Do We run a criminal check on the parents, check their credit or their DMV record.????

If you have a child that goes to church, do you check the membership for felons, the Pastor for his past record.??

Why were the this boys parents held responsible in any way for the conduct of others toward their son????

Are we now saying that the parents of special needs children should lock them in their rooms for their own for protection. Are parents responsible for the acts committed against their children night and day???

So WTF are these people trying to say here, are children with special needs to be treated different from those that have none.?    No Parties or class dances, no sleep overs or allowed to attend any function without a parent present.???  Can the parent be charged if their child is riding a bike untended and a DRUNK hits them?------So a young special needs girl is allowed to go to the corner store and is ganged raped-----are the  parents  charged with neglect ?????

Sounds like in this case the parents wanted their son to live a normal life, do things other kids his age do, along come MONSTERS,that set him on fire and now all attention is on the parents that allowed their child to do what millions of family's do, this is good defence tactics.
Blame the victim. their parents and their Aunt Nellie.  The kid asked for it and his parents are to blame for allowing their child to be placed in a dangerous environment.

Heh! You made those, too, huh? We stopped after embedding one in the neighbors truck door! They never did find out what happened to that door!
