Though, neither she nor the boy's father tried to help him with his homework, they grounded him, took away his cell phone, and gave him lecture after lecture to get him to raise his grades, but nothing worked.
The mother or father could have found a tutor for their son if they were unable to help.
Ok...
What makes a couple of you think that this kid is a punk? Just the way he looked in the video? I didn't see anything in that article that mentioned that he was a smartass toward his parents/teachers etc...
In fact, the last straw came when he got an F in gym class on his latest report card.
An F in gym class? yeah, he's a punk.
I think this approach is awesome! I am so glad that there are still parents who care enough about their kid to NOT be their friends.
The 33-year-old hair stylist was fed up that her 15-year-old son, James Mond III, was making his way through school with such low grades. Though, neither she nor the boy's father tried to help him with his homework, they grounded him, took away his cell phone, and gave him lecture after lecture to get him to raise his grades, but nothing worked.
Got an F in gym class so he's a punk?
Would he be a punk if he got an F in English class or math?
I bet if it were a clean cut white boy on that corner....
I can agree with the tough love of it but I don't know if they actually "cared" that much
My son is screwing off in school and we are trying EVERYTHING right now. Diet, discipline, and soon a dr's visit
How old is your son Gina?

I have a surplus of White Light and can send some if that will help! :-) :-) :-)
I wasn't offended. I wish the belt would work on him. It worked on mine and my brother's asses growing up. It doesn't do anything to my son
What are you seeing for issues? There may be something going on. You can email me if you want, I am the queen of SpEd (son with autism).
hyper
loves to draw
loves fishing
when he becomes interested in a hobby, he becomes obsessed with it but not in a bad way
only thing his teachers say is he is all over the place and a class clown.
I think he is lazy, wants us to give him the answers and that is our fault.
I don't think he has anything like autism or asperger's or anything like that and have parent's that do have children with those conditions say he doesn't.
Right now I am having the teachers fill out forms to give to his pedi
He almost sounds like I was in school, bored.

There are a lot of diagnosis he could have -- I could spew off about 3 of them from what you wrote, but that is all speculation from someone who has never laid eyes on him. Looks like you are getting evals done, so that is excellent. Hopefully you will some answers soon.
Note that the far majority of ten year old students want to be good in class. They honestly don't like to be called out for aberrant behaviors. If he is struggling with attending because he has some issues going on, then you will know and will know what you need to do to teach him the critical skill of self-regulation.
Good luck with the testing.
hyperMy stepson was the same way, liked hands on activities. All I asked is that he tried his best...that's all we can really do as parents, and set a good example. I realized that not all children will be exceptionally scholastic in all subjects. I asked Michael what he wanted to be when he was older. He told me a forest ranger, so i looked it up and told him the courses he needs to be good at, the same with Amanda(stepdaughter) She wanted to be a vet. What does your son want to be when he grows up? I find at age ten, kids like alot of things that have to do with animals. You mention he likes to draw, what kinds of things does he like?? He may be just bored as Thundley mentioned.

"It's such an unfortunate strategy, and of course it's ineffective," a child development expert told the Times. "The key to motivating children is to balance responsibility with support, and balance is the important part."
on the poing of attending school, my son has never missed a day of school in his life. Always gets perfect attendance at the end of the school year. He just has a problem keeping his mind on the subject instead of goofing off.
With my son it was plain boredom. He's a fast learner and had to sit and wait until everyone else 'got it' before they moved on. Teachers started giving him advanced work to do while he waited. Perfect solution!
Teachers can be quick to diagnose 'problems' for any child who doesn't just sit there. One year, school got a new, young teacher. She strongly suggested ADDH testing for damned near every boy in her classes. Town doc decided to test her; gave some of the kids placebos, with parents permission. Teacher gushed about their improved behavior.
The boys didn't change, only her perception of them did.
