U.S. Navy warship shadowing seized vessel takes action after gunshots are heard; 4 hostages apparently killed by captors, some pirates dead
The four Americans aboard a yacht hijacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia are dead.
Hijacked last Friday off Oman, the Quest was being piloted toward the Somali coast - and was being shadowed by a U.S. Navy warship.
CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports that gunshots aboard the yacht were heard, and the warship took action.
All four Americans were dead, killed apparently by their captors.
There were more than a dozen pirates on board, some dead and others captured, Martin reports. CBS (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/02/22/501364/main20034691.shtml)
All of those pirates should be dead.
-
Pirates should be shot dead, questions asked later. But didn't these people know about this Somali pirate problem? I mean how far OFF the coast were they?
-
I just heard that only two pirates were killed and others were in custody

Credit President Present with another victory. Nero Bumbler strikes again.
Too bad they hadn't contacted the Russians or Israeli. They know how to take care of bad actors. :killemall: Here is a hint Barry, sitting down and :kumbaya: don't cut it.
How many more must die? It is time to impeach, indite, and incarcerate this buffoon for crimes against humanity. He is setting the progress of Affirmative Action African Americans further back with each day his dithering ass remains propped up on the throne. :pokingpoop: [/du_mode]

Gina, from what I heard over the weekend, the people knew about the pirates, and had turned off all electrical to go unnoticed. :thatsright: I was talking to Thor in the SB and he said they were 300 miles off shore.

Link to their website: Here (http://www.svquest.com/)
I've been reading their blog about their adventures. They have been doing this since 2002 and had plans of continuing for a couple more years.

I've read stories of pirates being active 300 miles off the Somali coastline. It's awful hard to skirt much futher out than that.

I got the email from ABC news about 10 mins ago. lets see how hope and change takes it and what action if any
-
Their survival was doubtful from the very beginning from what I read. The Somali pirates have an extreme hatred of Christians for some reason.

Oh. I wonder what their DU names are then.
-
we know where their base of operation is. a pre emptive maybe???

Please. Clinton hightailed it out of Somalia the first time things got heated. What do you think his much weaker Democrat brother will do? Nothing.

still they could have taken a more southerly course out of range.

sure the hell not sailors

That would send them around the entire continent of Africa.
I have a better solution....why doesn't the international community allow ships to be armed to the teeth for international travel? To make anti-gun countries happy, require that they be secured prior to reaching port.

I have heard that 13 pirates were taken into custody, to join two others already in custody. Chain 'em all together, add some iron to the "package," and toss 'em overboard.
The next (Republican) president had better re-activate the remaining two Iowas to deal with this problem.

the Iowa's??? that's like killing a roach with a shot gun :lmao: but I would like to see em sail again. they were one of the best methods to show the flag.

....aaand the students at Columbia laugh and jeer when someone says "there are people who want to kill you."
Rest in Peace.

ABC news says The Americans were sailing the world on a Christian mission to distribute bibles. which makes them soft targets.

Great, the DOJ has 13 more piracy cases to **** around with instead of 15 dead pirates.

They were actually hijacked 300 miles off the coast of Yemen, and 350 miles from the easternmost point in Somalia........a normally safe and secure part of the area. The pirates are apparently expanding their area of operations due to increased naval security in their normal hunting grounds.
You don't sail a 40 meter sloop around the world twice by being a poor sailor.
Unfortunately the lack of will by the international community to just massacre them and sink their vessels has allowed them, through the influx of large amount of ransom dollars, to purchase larger, faster, and more sophisticated vessels, better arms and electronic navigation, and radar equipment. They are NOT just a bunch of poor ragtag fishermen hijacking vessels close to shore with small open boats. They are now a well equipped paramilitary force, and need to be dealt with with overwhelming force........
Unfortunately, with naval assets from a good number of nations conducting security operations in the area, the Russians seem to be the only ones willing to simply wipe them out without mercy.
Last report that I saw mentioned that 13 pirates were captured.........what do you want to bet that assuming the captors were US forces, that Obama drags them back here for a trial in front of a liberal judge, who at the most will give them a 20-year sentence for four murders, and piracy. At worst they will stick them in a Federal prison where they will live a life several orders of magnitude better than their lives at home.
Under maritime law they SHOULD be simply shot on sight, and the bodies thrown overboard for the sharks. A Harpoon missile should take care of the "mother ship" from where they typically embark.
Alas, however, since much of the PC west views them simply as poor, illiterate black people just "trying to survive" in a less than third world country, little will ever be done.

No doubt Obumbles will say the SEALs, "acted stupidly," and offer an apology to the pirates.

the Iowa's??? that's like killing a roach with a shot gun
and your problem with that is....?
There are known seaports along the somali coastline that are havens for pirates. They are viewed and treated as rockstars by the locals because of thevast wealth they are accumulating from their pirate antics as well as the whole "coolness" of the pirate mystique. I don't think the civilized world would miss any of these seaports if they were to be disappeared.

my problem with that is it would cost taxpayers millions/billions to take them outta mothballs and make them operational. in Nam the cost of keeping the New Jersey afloat was a million bucks a day !!!!

good point and thanks for thinking about the taxpayer $$. How about we use a predator drone instead? They are fairly inexpensive to operate, don't put any U.S. Servicemen at risk, and are accurate and can send a personalized message to these areas supporting and housing the pirate scum.

It isn't clear whether these missionaries were armed or not, likely not. It is a mean old world out there and naivete can get you killed. They certainly knew they were sailing in troubled waters but entering such an area willingly and unarmed is reckless and just plain stupid.

These people were sailing around the world more or less on a permanent basis and doing so without at least a pump 12 gauge on board is begging for trouble. The gulf of Aden is not the only area rife with pirates, it is just the beginning of a band which extends from there down through Indonesia and north to PI, Muslim cutthroats all the way.
Certainly these folks had every right to be in international waters doing as they please, thousands of people on yachts are doing just that all over the world. Part of our Navy's mission is to protect them but it doesn't help to have an empty shirt as C-in-C that does virtually nothing to address the problem until an incident like this does happen and then micro manage it from the Oval Office on a case by case basis.

It is painfully obvious that we need sufficient forces tailored to the mission to remain on station in the area permanently. It wouldn't take much, a few fast patrol boats and one larger ship with helicopters and a response force aboard. A small number of single engine observation aircraft can cover a lot of water and do so very economically. Just the presence of such a force would put a stop to much of this BS but they need to have the standing orders to be able to do the job without their hands tied and their every move dictated from outside the theater. Obama needs to turn them loose to do what they need to do and keep his nose out of it. A take no prisoners response is the only thing these sea going neanderthals understand.

ARC Light, Rolling Thunder, Linebacker, it's all good when dealing with this scum

Ya Know, it's funny how history repeats itself, and governments seem never to learn from that history.
We had a nearly identical problem with the Barbary pirates shortly after 1800.........uniquely we had a president with balls.
The solution, as I've related in another thread on this topic was to send a fleet with assult troops, engage and burn their ships to the waterline, follow them home, burn their towns villages, and cities to the ground......kill men women, children, dogs, cats and cattle........salt the earth, and repeat until the problem goes away.
It went away.........but we DID have a president that decided that he wasn't going to spend his term apologising for America..........

Nobody in the world fears us anymore. I am surprised el douche even let the Navy help out. I am even surprised they were allowed to kill two of the pirates. Any one see the new Navy TV commercial? A GLOBAL FORCE FOR GOOD? http://www.navy.com/navy/about/gffg/
-
AP article I read on this said....
there are currently 30 ships and over 660 people being held hostage by these pirates.
the pirates have been paid millions upon millions of dollars (or Euros or whatever) in ransoms. and reportedly just ONE ransom paid last year was $9.5 MILLION. that all of the ransoms being asked are in the millions.
the people who owned the yacht have been sailing around the world since 2004 with a boat full of Bibles and handing them out. the other couple was from Seattle and joined them at some point, and are well-known at their yacht club as "great sailors, good people".
it was US Special Forces that attempted the rescue. (since they most likely came from one of the 4 Navy vessels, including the USS Enterprise, trailing the yacht, they would be SEALS?)
the pirate guy that stood trial for pirating the Alabama, was tried in New York, and was sentenced to 30 years. (that means the US is giving him better food, shelter, and tv reception than he had in Somalia)
the pirates' "camp" location is apparently quite known, by most governments.
------------------------
Will any governmental agency - from any country - be willing to risk 660+ hostages, to go in and destroy the pirates' lair?
Would there be repercussions from governments - who have some of their citizens being held - if those hostages were killed in the process of annihilating the pirates, if said governments didn't agree with the attacking governments?
Why would anyone sail around the world with a boatload of Bibles, knowing that there are more non-Christians in the world who truly hate Christians? While it might make them martyrs, to some, it is isn't going to make them any less dead.

You'd be amazed at what a loadout of SEALs from an SSGN can accomplish.

There goes that disgusting word "GLOBAL" again. Been seeing it a lot lately. Why don't we just have our troops all paint their helmets blue, burn the constitution and run up the UN flag on the Capitol? It's what their pushing for.
-

Not so much amazed as in awe.
But they can't do it, without a leader who allows them to do it.

sure. there's a lot of good hardware that can do it. but will the empty suit give the order???

we didn't have that in Nam. maybe i should re enlist ???? :-)

The policy towards pirates should be: Take no prisoners.
-
It's a hard place to avoid if you want to get from the Indian Ocean to the Med.
Exactly! Hell they were 300 miles out! Ya can't get much more careful than that! My question is, why hadn't our guys boarded this vessel if they suspected them to be pirates? WTF were they waitin' for??????????
Eta:
Oh lord, I just heard Hitlery make a response! More diplomacy, right, that's worked so well so far! How 'bout givin' our guys the decision who are already there? Any boat, suspect of bein' a pirate vessel, should be boarded, if they are indeed pirates, execute them on site and sink the vessel and just shut the hell up! Who the hell is goin' to miss 'em???
-
We need to DEMAND action from our appeasers in charge. Not Diplomacy, not tactfulness, not anything "peaceful"!!! KILL them ****ers DEAD!!

orders from HQ. they can't board without it. but then why were the orders not issued sooner??? he was on the golf course
-
Not only did 0bamao neglect his duties, but I also heard that the Navy was trying to resolve the issue without having the 4 civilians killed. That all ended when the Somali pirates opened fire on the Navy ship that was nearby.
-
had that been Bush he would have said take em down. NOW !!!

The best way to deal with pirates is to violently and brutally kill them and dump them into the ocean.

All of those pirates should be dead.
My idea: the International Maritime Organization submits a boilerplate treaty to the UN
Security Council, with three sentences:
1. The area of the (insert name of body of water) bounded by (insert coordinates
of boundaries) has been declared a "piracy danger zone".
2. Any vessel sailing within this area without a flag AND transponder
broadcasting the vessel's ID on (insert frequency) shall be deemed a "pirate
vessel", and may be fired upon at any time without warning by a flagged vessel
or aircraft of any member nation; and any person on board killed- including
persons who abandon ship in lifeboats or into the sea.
3. Member governments, non-government organizations, and corporations may offer
and pay bounties for vessels destroyed and people captured or killed under the
terms of this treaty.
Security Council ratifies the treaty, and the pirate hunt begins.

How long will it take the pirates to capture a few flags and transponders? Also, that might be cost prohibitive for legitimate fishing boats in the region.
-
Yeah the legitimate locals don't exactly look they can afford much more than a pair o' boxers! Every one I've seen out fishin', looks like that's all they're wearin'!
