I am a union man 100%. Unions are the reason we have good pay, vacations, pensions, benefits, 8 hr days, and a high standard of living. Take away the union at your peril.

I guess there's no laws in Canada mandating minimum wages, 8 hr days, or workplace safety.  If there is, you're paying dues to someone who claims to be negotiating something you already have.

Unions had a purpose when workers were exploited. That time is past. Now there are laws to regulate how employers treat their employees.

I never had to work for minimum wage. I was in the Union and made great pay with great benefits. You are a sad and jealous person obviously working for  minimum wage .

And how much did your great pay and benefits add to the price of the product you provided? Were you worth it?

I just figured out that illegal alien voting rules apply on this poll. Seems it doesn't matter how often you vote because it doesn't keep track of you and prevent you from returning so vote early and vote often...

Unions may have had their place at one time but, like all good things the corruption has taken over and lined the pockets of those who are in charge of the damn thing. The same people that blast corporations for making a single dime in profit, sleep just fine at night when union bosses make a damn good living off the backs of the workers. Just like in govt when they preach the message you agree with, the corruption is excused.

Who let this a-hole in here?  He was shitting all over the place at CU for weeks.

Back to your point, I've been working for 18 years or so and have never been in a union.  I negotiate my salary/benefits/etc.  I'm doing just fine.  Why the **** do I need to pay a union to do that for me?

You silly. Can't you understand it.

The disadvantaged worker elects one of their peers to represent them in the struggle for equality in a free and open election.

The union representative is usually the smart one in the bunch. They waited until the 9th grade to quit high school. When negotiating a new contract, the previously mentioned 9th grade drop out is setting across the table from a Harvard MBA, who is representing the company. After the new contract is agreed on, the union gets a share of the workers new 2% increase in wages. This is on top of the monthly dues that the worker pays the union to keep them rolling in cash. On top of the 2% pay increase, the union got an additional day off with pay. It never occurred to the union workers that the salary worker will get the same day off because there are no peons to do the labor.

I negotiated every job I've had since I was 19 because I could outperform most off the street.

I generally made 20% more than the guys workin' right along side me, because it was nothing more than a paycheck for most of 'em. Once I learned I could build the Space Shuttle off a set of good prints and hit management, it was management who had to do the negotiating.

Eta:

I forgot to mention, I never need a union rep to do it for me either!

Yeah I've seen it! Ah, well, back to the drawin' board. They did have a successful launch though, kinda.

Yea, that is why a high school flunky makes $90 thousand a year with a 100% pension, fully matched 401K, and zero deductible, zero co-pay Cadillac health care plans for doing nothing more than slapping go-no go stickers on windshields in Detroit. That is we we pay $40,000 for a car that is worth $28,000.

Why have a union when a perfectly functional brain would suffice?

Because, then they would have to do the work.

Considering less than 8% (13% if you factored in public unions) of the workforce is union, would we REALLY miss them?

I'll take that "peril".
