Title: Hello there
Post by: Bertram on February 18, 2011, 09:01:18 AM
My names Mike, I'm a Political Science major.
I'm probably get accused of being a liberal several hundred times, as my passion is Debate, so I've trained myself to see both sides.
I'm socially liberal, but politically moderate.
I have a conditioned irrational distaste for Conservativeness, however, I'm completely aware of this and I'm sure I'll overcome it eventually.

I have a knack for pointing out logical fallacies and giving tips on how to improve ones arguments, don't take it as an insult, it's merely constructive criticism.

Welcome.

How did you find us?

No malicious intent behind the query--it's asked of all new members--it's just that as marketing director of conservativecave, I like to know what brings people here; what works and what doesn't work.

You're a political science major who has yet to take political philosophy. Spare us your condescension. The last thing we need is to be lectured by a wet-behind-the-ears know-it-all fresh out of the womb. Get some life experience, then come talk to us. Academic theory =/= Actual Practice.

My apologies, I didn't realize until now you are an administrator.

I didn't mean to come off as condescending.
I just though I'd jump right in! This is a discussion forum. It seemed to me that most people were talking about how they agree with each other! Clash is a GOOD thing, especially in discussion. It creates new ideas or new views on a position.

We don't care if you are a liberal. And it's always good for anyone to be able to recognize that there are often differening opinons on most topics.

I'm socially liberal, but politically moderate.

wow. You do realize that this is a "politically and socially conservative" forum, right? And your 4th sentence in your INTRODUCTION ABOUT YOURSELF...is to express your distaste for most of the people here? That's certainly classy.

Oh debk you put that so nicely.....but unfortunately Yankees mistake polite, mannerly, genteel conversation and discussion for weakness and stupidity. Maybe I should enlighten our new friend that when southern ladies, and southern gentlemen for that matter, have suffered enough of their insufferable Yankee attitude, that scorn and fury the likes of which even hell has never seen will come down on his little ass.

Hi Bertram,

Welcome, my name is Vesta.

Please accept my sincere condolenses that you were raised as orphaned.

You have done well to get into College with no family to teach you respect or civil deportment. Your future may be a bit hard as I do not think you could get a job as a Walmart greeter with your social skills.

Please pay no attention to some of the men here, they are a rough and rowdy group that were fighting off alligators in swamps before you were born.

It's some of us woman here that you need to tread carefully around, when we had kids like you, we spanked them and sent them to their room.

**** off, grasshopper. Take your "conditioned irrational distaste" somewhere else, whether or not you're aware of it.

You wouldn't know constructive criticism if it spit in your face, so I'll just keep it uncivil -- maybe you'll understand that.

"If you're not a liberal at twenty you have no heart, if you're not a conservative at forty you have no brain."

It's surprisingly true.  Liberals want to save the world.  Conservatives have learned you can't, you can only improve what you have control over.  It's very over-simplistic, but it's true in its rawest forms.

Kid, stick to pursuing an education and focus on the important things in life at your stage. Don't piss off your parents, don't wreck your car, don't get some chic knocked up, and when that little tingly thing happens down deep in your gut, second guess what your professors are feeding you, trust but verify. You will understand more when you have advanced to the point where you no longer call home for money and you actually have to work for it. If you have a part time beer money job now, that doesn't count.
Try this-
Actually know what you are doing and engage in that in a real life setting, with constant competition in the way of chasing better talent than what you are fielding, and make a go of it.
Pay your bills on time and in full by your own accomplishments.

Ask yourself, and I understand I am engaging a mind that depends on that mom & dad debit card, WHO IS GOING TO PAY YOUR WAY FOREVER?

When do you become a man?

I joined the Marine Corps at 17 and never looked back, did a four year hitch, entered the workforce, worked my way up in several jobs, have served as a foreman -try that as a welder in a railyard, it does not equate with head fry chef at Mickey Dee's. If my guys had a legitimate gripe with me it could mean fists out in the lot, and did a time or two, not "I have been offended, so you are a criminal" bs. I own my own home, three vehicles and a boat. I DO NOT LOOK TO ANYBODY TO PAY MY WAY FOR ME OR SEEK ANY SORT OF VICTIM STATUS TO HIDE BEHIND.
You will likely not understand this for several years to come. It is earned pal, not entitled.

You are certainly welcome here and your opinions are as well. Let them be your opinions, you do have a mind, use it. Drop the talking points, the precocious condescension and be yourself for once, think about that.

You the man, Reb! The "distaste for conservatives", put him in the firing range, as far as I'm concerned! Maybe he shoulda opened up to us in the "Fight Club", instead.

Whadda ya think would happen if he opened with that phrase at the DUmp"? Hell, he'd be a celeb in no time!

However, if he opened with, "I have a severe distaste of liberals", he'd be eatin' pizza before he could hit "enter" on his next post!

Must be because they like the First Amendment so much!

So tell me again why you're here, Bertram?

I noticed that FreeBorn. My post was directed at Bertram. It's just plain rude not to acknowledge a quotation. I also find it fascinatingly odd that young Bertram, a sophomore in college, has difficulty spelling. (these misspellings don't seem to be typos, either, just blatant misspellings) Given his major, Poli Sci, that disturbs me even more. But what do I know?? I'm just some high school grad that enlisted in the military.  ::)

That's the idea, sir; membership retention.

Right now, though, there's some bozo running around that I wouldn't care if he dropped dead.

But once in a while we get a live one worth our time, and here I'm talking about our sort-of-esteemed member compaqxp, who's of course wrong-headed about politics and probably most other things, but he has a healthy robust sense of humor, a rare trait on the other side.

This Bert guy here, I'm not so sure about, but time will tell.  I'm willing to give Bert a chance.

You are a very eccentric person.  I love reading your posts.

Uh, no.  I get the feeling she has no less than 75 cats in her home.  Not that it's a bad thing....

Hopefully you'll grow out of the stars-in-your-eyes and I'm-like-totally-super-intelligent phase when you enter the workaday world and start having to rely upon yourself.  At least you're cognizant of your one admitted failing.  It's a start.  Good luck.

Let's try not to run this kid off.  The fact that he's here and being respectful with his questions tells me that he's open to listening to our opinions.  Instead of pushing another person over to the DU side, why don't we convince this kid that our beliefs are correct?

AYFKM?

Respectful with his questions/comments? Like this?

Quote
Homosexuality isn't just about sex. It's a state of identity.

You then said sex outside of marriage is immoral. That didn't really answer. But never mind. Why is sex outside of marriage immoral?

People seem to throw the word immoral out at anything they disprove of now adays.

How about this one?

Quote
So the whole argument that it harms troop cohesion and morale is mostly baseless?
Awesome.

The first comment was not written in a manner indicating respectful discourse. If anything, the comment denotes petulance, arrogance, and a heaping tablespoon of "**** you."

You, as a cop, get to deal with that shit every day and my hat's off to you because you apparently can do it without boiling over. I'm not a cop, so I don't have to deal with that shit every day. Therefore, I can allow myself to call bullshit on a kid who thinks his shit doesn't stink.

The second comment was written in response to your own expressed position on gays in the military.

While I disagree with your premise, the fact you served goes a long way and while I disagree, I respect your opinion.

Asswipes like this kid Bertie have nothing to say in this matter, as far as I'm concerned, until they ruck up and swear an oath. Until then, it's just another punk running his cock holster [h/t to Sparky for that one  :lmao:]

Tell you what -- you go ahead and entertain him. I'll engage when he ****s up.

If he runs off to DU, that's no sweat off my brow. Good friggin' riddance.

What exactly does a political science major do once he milks mom and dad for the money to get his degree?

They become politicians! They indoctrinate these kids to the liberal religion, then send them out to indoctrinate others! These are the kids that stifle free speech on campus by actin' like complete assholes when a conservative is invited to speak. They protest, shout down the speaker so his opinion cannot be heard, hell, they even throw pies in order to disrupt any education that might be gained!

How many times have ya engaged in this sort of childish behavior, Bert?

We're not goin' to change this punk's mind in the least! What the hell would he do for a job after he graduates? Pretty sure anyone tryin' to introduce this puppy into conservatism is "humpin' a football"!

You have made some progress in me. I took a few hours studying the Laffer curve, now I understand how raising tax rates can decrease tax income. But I'm still a pro healthcare, (Not the current system, the current system sucks) pro moderate gun control, support gay marriage, I think organized religion is (mostly) unproductive, I'm not pro union, but I'm not anti union. I haven't made up my mind. I don't care about abortion because I think that is should be (almost) a non issue. I think the American Political system is terribly broken, it's run by lobbyists and corporations. Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission makes me cry a little inside.
There are only two parties in the United States so every election there is a choice between two evils. A Parliamentary system would be much better. I think that there should be a test required to be eligible to vote, but I'm still working on that plan, maybe I'll start a new thread with my 'master plan.' I think Sarah Palin is not suited to be President and McCain might be sitting in that office if he had chose somebody else.
That's my overall bias. :)
I'm here to be intellectually manipulated into being more conservative. Or at least legitimizing Conservative viewpoints in my head. (So I can use them to crush unwitting liberal debaters)

As you've said, you're listening. That's a good thing.

You've let a list of positions out on various issues. Now it's time for you to justify them.

Maybe the thing to do is for you post a thread on one or more of these issues, along with your rationale as to WHY you believe what you believe. If it's your opinion, state so. If you're basing your belief on empirical evidence, strongly suggest you provide a link to that source -- and hopefully it's a credible source. Wikipedia is not generally considered to be terribly credible, though depending on the issue, Wiki does have its uses.

I'd suggest also that you do NOT begin in this thread. This is an intro thread, not a political or social issue thread.

I'll withhold further commentary until you present your theses.

I bet living in CA is making that hatred/distaste of liberals more conditioned, though.

Tell me I'm wrong, BEG.
