Title: Crackers?
Post by: thundley4 on February 05, 2011, 01:04:02 PM
How do people eat them with chili or soups if at all?  I've always crunched them up in whatever I' eating, but my with just takes bites of them between spoonfuls of soup, if she eats them at all.

Crunched up in soup, whole for everything else.

Saltine is buttered first for dipping.

I had forgotten all about buttered saltines.  One of the neighbor ladies that my mom visited when I was little would serve either buttered crackers or sugar cookies with hot tea. Both were good.

Can't stand crackers in soups/chili.

Maybe with a piece of cheese or summer sausage on it, but not as a filler in a soup. Yuck.

These, IMO, are the best crackers hands down but they're local -- I guess you can get them on Amazon though.  (I wasn't sure if I should put this in the regional food thread but this thread is probably more appropriate)

"Original Trenton Crackers":

These are great for soup, etc. or for eating with just grated horseradish . . . most seafood places in NJ have OTCs and horseradish on the tables.  For soup, I usually take a couple/three in my fist and crush them together over the bowl.

This is how you usually get them at the Lobster House in Cape May:

Yes I did wonder if this was a raciest thread-------

Any kind with a dip of cream cheese and salsa separated on the plate, never mixed together.

Crackers and peanut butter, crumbed Ritz Crackers to top sea food or even chicken.

I'm with you, Eupher. Although, when I was young, I liked to crush up crackers an put them in my soup. I've NEVER done that to chili except when I was eating from the galley. (ANYTHING to improve the flavor of Navy prepared food!!)

Crackers & sausage, cheese or both are my favorite ways of eating crackers. I also like them with peanut butter or maybe some sort of dip or cheese spread. And I can't STAND those herb flavored things people like to call "Crackers" :puke:

I like lots of different kinds of crackers. I'm pretty flexible on dips, spreads, sausage, salami on them. I don't like them used as a base for soemthing and then put in the oven.

I may dip them in soup, but crushed crackers in soup is just nasty! Crackers in soup is right up there with cereal.  :puke:

I do like a bit of cornbread in chili though....especially when eating it at someone's house and the chili isn't very good. Bless her heart, had to do it at my daughter's back in the fall. Wasn't about to tell her that her chili was more like tomato juice with an excess amount of beans in it... :(

I tried a somewhat interesting snack  with saltine crackers.. The way it was  made by a coworker was taking your favorite seasoning mix, either store bought, or of your own mix of seasoning , and used olive as a coating to make the seasoning stick to the crackers. I'm not sure if it was done individually on a pan, or if it was all shaken together in a big ziploc bag but it was delicious and almost addictive!! :-) :-)

That sounds interesting enough that I might experiment with it.

I have a recipe for those but with oyster crackers.

I spoon the soup or chili on the cracker then take a bite. It takes me forever to eat a bowl of soup.

it all depends upon the crackers and the soup. Saltines in broth type soup, crunch up a few, not so many that they overpower. Saltines with chili I tend to scoop the soup on them. As a rule, if it is scoupable I'll put it on the cracker!

Fritos for the chile. Saltines cracked in half for soup. But never in front of the Soup Nazi. For mini sandwiches, 2 crackers, meat and or cheese in between.
