I talked to a homeless woman the other day..

I was riding my motorcycle in forty degree weather and was stopped at a gas station, the woman was walking by and when I nodded and said hello she asked me if I got cold and I told her that my riding suit is water and windproof as well as insulated and the only parts that get cold are my face and fingers as long as the ride is not too long.

She told me that the day before that was even colder and rainy she spent all day in her sleeping bag under the bridge where she lives, she then mentioned that she can't leave her stuff for more than a few minutes because someone worse off than her is likely to steal what few meager possessions she has.

It's hard to get much more poor than living under a damn bridge like a ****ing troll in cold, wet weather.

Yes, poor people in Egypt are truly suffering, my point is that we have people that are arguably as badly off right here in the land of the free, the wealthiest nation on the planet.

I'm sure you left the part out where you bought her a hot meal or something, right?

Oh wait libs don't do such things they just support legislation that should help that person.

1. It amazes me that Americans are so apathetic ...

... in light of our own corrupt government and the war on the middle, poor,
and working classes.

Other than supporting govt help do you do anything for homeless people?
Do you pull a shift at a soup kitchen? Do you go through your closet and donate old clothes to charities that help them?
Do you hand them a few bucks to get something decent to eat?
If the answer is no, then you my friend, are just as apathetic as you say everyone else is.

Are you kidding.....nobody knows better than a DUmmie where that money would go. That's why they want the government to take YOUR money and give it to them.

I find that amusing they fear if they hand a bum a 5 spot he may buy booze, yet they have no problem if that bum sells his food stamps and buys a bottle of jack, or a bag of pot.

10. I saw a homeless man having a seizure on the ground

Edited on Sat Jan-29-11 12:01 PM by bear425
yesterday, as I was driving. I called 911 immediately, but I saw a bicycler just drive past him like he was invisible. There were many other drivers along this busy street. Don't know if I was the only caller to 911, but it was sad to see. The 911 operator said he probably just fell off the bus bench. I said, that may be true, but he was definitely having a small seizure, too. She sounded callous and as if this is a normal everyday occurence. I heard the ambulance coming as I reached my destination.

BearNumbers really went out of his way to help.  He drove past is his car and called 911.

Yep, I have to wonder if the 911 operator's reaction was in part because he called while driving past the ill homeless person, so he was essentially trying to tell her what was wrong without bothering to check the guy out himself.

13. Even Here In Florida... All Year Around, There Is One Woman I See

ALL THE TIME walking with her head covering her to keep out the sun and/or help her during the cold weather we've been having. She DOES have mental problems because many of us have tried to help her, but there is NO WHERE that will keep her! A few days here or there from what I understand, and I'm sure I don't have all the info... but this is just in my small neighborhood.

I can't imagine how many many others there are! JUST SICKENING!

Are we next??

And the DUmmie doesn't give her food and shelter? Com on DUmmie you have food and a roof over your head, distribute your wealth.

Apathetic my ass.  Billions of our tax $$ go to feed, provide healthcare and education for the poor (both legal citizens as well as illegal aliens) so get off your ****ing high horse and quit telling me I am apathetic and not pulling my weight to help the less fortunate.

I think the DUmmie just wanted to ramble about his water proof, wind proof and insulated motorcycle gear. He could of gave a heck about the homeless person.
Did her offer her some money or supper? Didn't read it in his post.

Taking a deep breath here--Some folk just want to be homeless.   Wait don't jump on me yet.

I notice that many of them refuse to go to shelters for various reasons, perhaps they do not want to follow the rules, even when the temps. drop past freezing some refuse the rescue teams that go on the search to save their lives.

I watched a documentary about the homeless that lived UNDER NYC at one time.  They found a way to tap into the city electricity, dragged in boards and built hootch's of some kind.    Days they scavenged for what ever could help them, nights going through dumpsters behind restaurants.  Amazing the methods they came up with to stay warm, cool, cook or sleep.

There were about 30 of them living under their own terms when the city came in, knocked down their self made homes and placed them in apartments with kitchens and bathrooms, at no cost to them.   All but 2 of them left after a month or more to find a new home in the life style they choose. Life had lost all meaning to these people when everything was given to them.

Some are a different breed of humanity, they crave the challenge to survive, refuse any kind of help that has any restrictions on them.

Are these old timers crazy,?  They have no interest in the future beyond the here and now, have little connection with family, trust no one but do have friends that they make on the streets.

If you really want to help them, give them respect, calling them Sir or Madam is a great start.  Never let them feel they are excepting Charity,, for the really crazy ones tell them you just "Found" a pair of new socks and ask them to pass them on.  Give them a bag or oranges and tell them they fell off the back of a delivery truck---pass them on.

If you have the balls, when you become aware of a tent city of the homeless, gather up old blankets and make it look like something that had been left behind or discarded.  To truly help someone you must first understand what one can do for them and keep their ego intact.

If these people want to get off the streets then they can at any time, those that live life on the streets will resent those who go charging in to change their lives. Used books are great, as a bartering tool, and these people love to barter, trade a couple of old paperback books for a cup with a chip in it, make them feel they got the best of you in a deal.  They know who likes to read and will trade the books for a pair of rusty pliers.

Fill up a truck with what you tell them are  leftovers from a yard sale that did not sell, then drive to a place that the home less hang out, tell them you are on your way to the dump and wondered if anyone had anything to trade for something that interests them before you dump it. Take off any price tags and make most of the stuff look old.   All ways trade, never Charity.

Most of all, let these people be, the story in the Dump has an odd feel to it, most street people will not speak or reveal their hiding holes to a stranger.    Paranoid about theft, assult, ---not much different from us who have burglar alarms in our homes, cars, property.

We have within our country million of adults that are homeless, they can put a young pup survivalist to shame after being on the streets for 20+ years.

If we feel an urge to help them, bring in canned foods, dry products and lots of rice and beans to keep the Soup kitchens going, remember most of these places are staffed by people that need by the courts to do service to the community.

Talk to the managers of grocery stores about donating the near expiring food stuffs, vegetables and canned goods that may become tax deductable for them.

Support the Free clinics for medical and denial help.  Bring the old sheets and towels, bags of cotton balls etc that one can get on sale at Walmart.  Computer paper, Pens, pencils and UNOPENED boxes of band aids, sterile gauze over the counter cough syrup, sanitary pads, tampons or toilet paper.  Old eye glasses , hearing aids, walkers and or crutches that are no longer needed.

I never give money to Charity's, I perfer to give the comunity material things so I can watch how and where the next need is.  My first desire is to help the Adults especially our Veterans that take to the street .

I'm not shocked.  I've been a regular volunteer for several years, the last two at a shelter in Dallas.  I can't help but notice that the people who work there are all liberals, but all the volunteers are conservatives.  You'd think it would be the other way around by listening to them talk about how much they help the poor.

I'm not shocked.  I've been a regular volunteer for several years, the last two at a shelter in Dallas.  I can't help but notice that the people who work there are all liberals, but all the volunteers are conservatives.  You'd think it would be the other way around by listening to them talk about how much they help the poor.

One of our largest shelters backed with big time money got their knickers in a twist when the local police requested they send them information on their "Guests".  This shelter was open to all as long as they had the beds.  Men, woman and children headed their way with the promiss of help, doctors and a safe place for woman and children. This was a shelter for all, none of the cops business.

When the police were turned down by the shelter for Names and head counts, they became some what interested in the operation.   For a couple of years they began to pick up those wanted as Pedophiles or those wanted in other states and found they were living at the shelter next door to people with children.   Soon the news paper began to report arrests of those who lived in the shelter accused of every crime one can think of.  Got to the point the Shelter found a way to keep the address of those arrested out of the paper, bad publicity.  Locals knew where they lived as the papers managed to give a few hints to the Public.

Some how the shelter raised $3,000,000 dollars or so from what I hears and rebuilt the area into a rival to a hotel chain.  Beautiful, and they separated the family's with children from the lone males or females that were lucky enough to get a bed for a night or months on time.

They still have the confidentiality rule and refuse to give any information to the police about their residents-----Yet, they must have their own internal security division as for the last year when a bad person is picked up the last known address is that shelter, it is made known that they were kicked out of the place.

Interesting place, now they have their shit in one sock and protect the family's with kids and find them jobs and a place to live.  On the other hand they protect the identity of those singles that are wanted by the police for most any kind of crime.

I kind of like this place for the sake of the children, the adults can fend for themselves.  It is the children and family's that I care about at this sheltering the other hand as The Administrators and owners of the shelter go, I wonder how much they are being paid to help the unfortunate.   Has this become a business or a true Charity.??

Remember beds count, to get money a Shelter must prove it is needed, if the economy goes up and few need their services, the less money they get.  In a thriving economy some shelters have to close down, but when times go hard then all beds are full and the money comes pouring in.

That's me.  I work as a youth counselor with the teenagers on my days off.  The adults are there based on poor decisions they made along the way.  We can fix that with youths because most of them have yet to be faced with those crossroads and hopefully we can point them in the right direction.
