Ancestry.com ad: 'Born a slave, died a businessman'

for those who haven't seen it, there's a black actor talking about how he was afraid, "being African-American", to look into his roots. But he went ahead and did it, and found out that his great great grandfather was born a slave ... pause ... but died a businessman! "And that made it all worthwhile." And they showed an old-timey picture of a black guy in a three-piece suit.

My question is, ok, maybe many African-americans would be upset if they found out that their ancestors were born slaves and died slaves, unlike the fortunate guy in the ad. But should they be upset if they found that out? And is being a businessman automatically a source of pride? Was he an honest businessman?

Maybe they should do an ad where a white guy is afraid to look into his roots because he is worried his ancestors might have been slaveowners.

Man, the DUmmies can find something to bitch about for every damn thing.

I think what really bugs the DUmmies is this man started off as a slave but, when freed made something of himself, and I'm assuming he had to have been successful for his great great grandson to be proud of him.

If anything, the left hates the power of the individual. I bet you when Beck says "man can rule himself" that makes their heads explode.

Many such stories in the old south....but they don't fit the liberal agenda.

Many such stories in the old south....but they don't fit the liberal agenda.

They hate this story for 2 reasons, 1 the power of the individual, 2 a business man is being looked on as being honorable.

They would much prefer to find out that after being freed he died in poverty because the almighty govt didn't give him free health care and free money.

DUmmies are not happy unless they are unhappy.

A few years ago a bank I did business with was celebrating "Black History Month". They had a little pamplet printed that had several such success stories in it, from slave to rich. They even had one story where an X-slave took care of his old master and family after they lost everything in the civil war. I picked one up and found it very interesting. Wish I still had it.

Like the old saying says, "You can't keep a good man down."

What the left leaves out, is some slave masters took decent care of their slaves, no I'm not saying that slavery was good by any means but not all owners were the whip cracking assholes that they love to talk about. So it's no big surprise that an ex slave would do something like that for his former master.

They also never seem to mention the black slave owners. Wonder why?  :-)

From what I've read, black slave owners were the worst of the lot.

Color me shocked. DUmmies loathe a success story because they will never grow the stones to leave their own victimhood behind.

The funny thing is a lot of times actual victims rise up and overcome whatever happened to them.
The so called victims at DU wallow in self pity and expect someone to bail them out.
I have never seen so many people in one place who never served a day in the military much less combat claim they have PTSD.
Most of them have PTSD for being told to eat their carrots at age 4.  :mental:

One of the biggest slave owners in South Carolina was a free black man by the name of William Ellison. And he wasn't the only one. Funny how the liberal historians overlook that little tidbit.

I am guessing you forgot about the legacy of Landslide Lyndon.  (Think about the quagmire which the poor and long suffering became bogged down in, our longest war, the one with the greatest costs and losses,  The War on Poverty).

Liberals loved him, the second coming of FDR.  His programs have sentenced generations of poor to a life of misery and deprivation.  Then there was Vietnam.  There is more than one  reason to call a big prick a Johnson.  :fuelfire:  And did I mention he was cruel to beagles??   :argh:

ETA: as an after thought one of the genealogy boards I belong to has been having a big dust up over Ancestry with regard to 'valid' research.  It centered on the fact that anyone can add to stuff there, caveat emptor, might be a good way to put the gist of the debate.

Is it any wonder?

Most haven't managed to make it out of mommy's basement, let alone go out in the world and support themselves!

Here's a link to census data...interesting facts and numbers of free blacks, slave owning blacks and wealthy blacks in the south pre-civil war.

The Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves of the Confederacy only. Not the slaves in the states of the northern aggressors. After the war, when all slaves were freed, it was the newly freed slaves that became carpetbaggers that raped the south during the reconstruction. To say that all carpetbaggers were former slaves would be a disservice to the white carpetbaggers who originated from the NE, also invaded the south. They brought with them their long held resentment of the freed slaves. So much so that they were the forerunners of the KKK, a democrat org., started by democrats and you were required to be a democrat to join.

This is a great site.

They're so dumb that they never get the point being made. The point of the commercial is this, a man who started out as a slave was able to pull himself up by the bootstraps and was able to become a millionaire, the word millionaire was left out of the OP's comments for some reason.

That phrase to a DUmmy is as garlic to a vampire. It burns.
