Much to my dismay, I have discovered that one of the old lady's cats, Jasper, not only likes to have the base of his tail scratched (as many cats do), but he rather enjoys being spanked there. The other two cats, Elsie and Blair, absolutely loathe being touched there.
I'm not talking gentle pats here...I mean that cat actually loves it when I lace into him as if he'd stolen something. Like my debit card and PIN number, or my car.
It's gotten to the point where I can't sit down in my favorite chair at night without this masochist sidling up next to me, meowing, begging me to beat the shit out of him.
I thought it was just him, until I googled "spanking cats," and discovered a plethora of YouTube videos, each featuring weird-ass cats into BDSM.

Phoebe, our Congo African grey parrot, isn't necessarily deranged, although she's funny as hell to listen to.
I walk through the door after work, and Phoebe announces:
"Daddy's home! Wanna go outside?"
Some other stuff she says, quite a bit of it in context:
"Phoebe's a pill."
"Where's the KITTY CAT?!?" Then she meows like a cat. She'll do this substituting "puppy dog" or "rooster" for "KITTY CAT" and make the associated animal sound.
"GIMME A KISS! <makes kissy sounds> "Thank You."
"Whaddya doin'?"
"C'mere Sweetie!"
She issues commands:
"Get 'er, Belle!" (said when the two dogs are playing in the house).
"GIMME APPLE COOKIE" (apple cookies are cut-up pieces of apple that the dogs love - Phoebe too)

We paid $750 for Papagena, our Solomon Islands eclectus. We traded in my cockatiel Corky for our first grey and got a discount on her - I think $500. She died in a freak accident in 2007 and I think we paid about $900 for Phoebe.
You'll spend that and more for purebred dogs.
Probably the most expensive parrot you can get on the market is the largest macaw - the hyacinth. You'll plunk down about $10K per copy. Cage will cost you extra, and those ain't cheap either - about $1,200 for a good one.

My dog, Angus, is a Blue Heeler. So, he is a herding dog. He has gotten his routine hardwired in his head. Lord help us if we do not go to bed when he determines it is time. He will stare, nudge, pace, and bark until we give up. It is always time at 10. Same routine in the am as well. He doesn't understand weekends at all.
That is the most annoying thing he does. The craziest would be that he eats his own hair. Off the floor. And bathes himself as a cat would. His BFF, Mikey the cat :thatsright: taught him that trick. You would think after 2 years of not seeing Mikey he would be over it. Not so much. I have to give him hairball medicine every now and then.

Our Pit/Lab/Springer mixed up pup will kick out with his back legs. Like a horse or mule he kicks out if someone or one of the other dogs gets too close to his rearend. We've had plenty of dogs, but this is the first kicker.

Mason likes having his belly rubbed. I've never seen a cat that liked that. Of course, sometimes he'll want to play, so he'll grab you with both paws and give a gentle (or sometimes not so gentle) reminder that he has teeth... Never drawn blood though. Then you better throw his catnip filled toy.

We fostered one for awhile and those guys are clownish, but gentle. They can give healthy screams, though, and that can be a problem if your next door neighbor is 30 feet away.

Jeez, that reminds me. Belle, our golden retriever, is almost 3 years old. We had her spayed at about 6 months old. If I get on the floor and romp around with her and our mutt, Belle likes to get around behind me and hump me. Needless to say, that lasts about 3 nanoseconds.

Same thing with my dog, Mama. I have convinced myself that it is simply due to the fact that he can't scratch there.

Dante was insane. Cockatoos are largely insane. After having been around a couple of them and having seen how self-destructive they can be, I have serious doubts as to whether they're actually suitable for humans in captivity. Oh, sure, I know of several people who have had cockatoos and have been perfectly okay with them, but far, far too many wind up as described.
Cockatoos are the cutest, most cuddly birds when they're young - under a year. But without firm guidance and good socialization AWAY from humans, they become incredibly demanding to the point that when they're denied, they often start with the objectionable behavior. And it's especially sad to see them actually chew holes in their chests because they're so wigged out.

I think proper socialization is the key, but many folks don't have a clue about that and wind up creating a bird that is accustomed to having its every need instantly attended to - and when the human goes off to work, or does the laundry, or goes out to eat, that bird often is traumatized and starts with a whole lot of trouble.

Yeesh. That's disturbing. Maybe something smaller would be better anyways. I do have some time though at least to study and make a decision. Mason is 8, and Maine Coons can live to be about 15-20.

All of my critters have quirks. We have a running debate on whether they came here that way or I caused it. O-) Currently we have 7 dogs, 20 horses and 2 birds.
Cartman (Maltese) likes to eat disposable razors. Kaiser (GSD) thinks the Maltese are powdered donuts. Yummy! Kazoo (Maltese) does the Lassie "Come quick!" thing-"Hurry, we're out of water!"
If she knows you, Fret (GSD) leads your car up the driveway-slow down!- and shows you where to park. She won't let the Maltese go down to the gate or in the pastures.
Fender (Australian Shepherd) alerts you if any horse is foaling or not where it's supposed to be.
The 1300lb Friesian wants to sit in your lap. Lips is named that because she'll take your hat, run off and drop it, then while you're going after it, she'll go get the coffee/gloves/tools you left behind.
Ike, the Quaker- likes to squawk loudly when I'm on the phone. I threaten to sell him on CL and he'll say"I'm a good boy." He also says "I'm a pretty boy" "What you doing?" "Let me out!" "Stupid dog" "Wanna play?"
"Step away from the cage" "Psst, come 'ere." "Shut the door" and "Durka durka."
The grey likes to mess with the dogs. He calls 'em by name, so they run back and forth looking for who's calling. When they sit by his cage, he makes bomb sound effects. (He watches the Military Channel) Greys can imitate the human voice perfectly.

Good Lord, I knew you had horses, but I didn't know you had THAT many. WOW. I ain't gonna ask what the farrier and vet bills run to, not to mention feed. Seven dogs? Wow again.
Any idea what "durka durka" means in gray-speak? I think Phoebe says something like that too. It's funny how she'll have a long conversation with herself in babble only she understands, which is interspersed with completely logical words and phrases which have no meaning in context. :lmao:

Greys mumble to themselves when they're practicing. Mine hides his face when he does it.
I used to breed Saddlebreds for show, and do an occasional rescue. Then I made the mistake of being on tv for saving some minis- now everybody brings the worst here. We even found newborn kittens in the mailbox. :censored: There are days I walk around mumbling "I hate people."

The asshole neighbor who did this stopped feeding her because he was mad at the owner. Asked me to 'come look at Angel, she's a bit off'. :argh:
I tracked down the owner and he was devastated. Gave me the horse and a blank check for her care. That never happens! He comes by often with his grandkids to visit her. I kept trying to figure out where I knew his daughter from, she's an actress. :thatsright:

We have four cats...
Skyy is the was the smallest of the three sisters we got when they were only about 6 or so weeks old from the shelter. She was a pound and a half, and the other two were only a bit bigger. They are getting ready to turn 6, but Skyy is still the "toddler". She craves attention, will get in the trash in the bathroom or my office to find something that will crinkle and make noise, until I pay attention to her. She follows me around the house, sleeps glued to my hip. When I go up to bed, she meows in a "lecturing tone" ... if I take too long - in her opinion - to get there. If they run out of food in their dispenser...when it's refilled, she will stuff herself, then come throw it up where I won't miss it. :thatsright:
Bailey looks almost identical to Skyy, (they are both black and white tuxedoes)..and she is usually wherever M is. She sleeps either between his knees or along his side, and will not move unless it's her idea. She's also referred to as the "Blanket Slut", because if I'm tucked under a blankie on the couch and he isn't, she will come lay on the blanket. She has little interest in anyone other than M. If he sleeps past 6:30, she will paw at him to wake him up. Once she gets him up, she will come back and crawl under the top of the covers by me....and goes back to sleep. :whistling:
Cocoa Puff is the third sister, and she looks like a Maine Coon. She looks like a puff ball, and is called Puff or Puffer usually. She is more aloof, but will sleep under the covers if she's cold..otherwise she's at M's feet. She is the alpha cat of the four. Will clean their faces and ears for them. And watches what they are doing more than participating. She is also the one to let us know when the feeder or water tower is empty. She will paw at the covers (they only seem to empty the darn things in the middle of the night!) usually on M, until he wakes up and goes and fills them up. She's terrified of storms - so am I - and always comes to wherever I am and stays with me until the storm is passed.
Jazzy was my daughter's tuxedo, is a few months older than the other 3 and since her sister went to live with a friend of my son'sabout 3 years ago, she's been a very contented cat. Since she escaped last Christmas and came back on NewYear's Day (a year ago), she has turned into a lap cat and become very clingy. She is usually on my lap when I'm on the computer or in a chair, and sleeps next to Skyy. She will go to anyone who will pay attention to her. She is the only one who likes to be picked up, and likes to be held like a baby with her head on the holder's shoulder.
When we come home, they are all waiting just inside the door for us. Will not eat people food. They line up outside their food/poop room (the bathroom on the top floor-attic), and eat and do their business - one at a time. Puff, Bailey, Jazz, Skyy...in the mornings and in the evenings....always the same way. They come when called. All hate strangers except for Jazz...they will disappear and not come out until company is gone. They will lick a hand to get it to pet them or continue petting. All of them give kisses. Puff and Skyy will pat at and chew on our hair.
The girls have never lived with dogs....but they act more like dogs than cats.

Wonderful storeys here of not just the pets but the people that are willing to put up with their quirks.
When my two rescue dogs hit 15 years old I decided to get a puppy to get them up and moving. This works as the new Pup a female soon took over the Alpha of the home and became in charge of my two Maine Coons that outweighed her by 12 to one.
The Pup soon learned from the old timers that when we put on shoes in the house that means we are going to leave them. Our VET told us that when the dogs humped our shoes that meant the dog was trying to intimidate the shoe so it would not take us away.
The pup is OCD in that everything must stay the same way, fed at the same time, going out at the same time and pulls our pillows out from under our heads if we do not get up at the same time in the AM. Bed time she will become frantic if we do not go to bed at the same time each night. For some very strange reason the Coons love the Puppy and allow her to pull them about the house by their tail. The Male now has little fur on its huge tail and I have bought 2 vacuum's so far to clean up all his fur.
Our birds one a Blue Parakeet we rescued and the other some kind of bird from the Canary family but bigger then the Parakeet are up off the floor about 7 1/2 feet high and both mutter and chuckle for hours at a time. Open space home so they can watch the living room, dining room and the kitchen and comment on the actions of the dogs and cats.
Strange behavior, or just instinct , the female Coon Will spend hours under the kitchen faucet drinking the dribble of water if I leave it on,
the male Coon will saunter up to the Pup and smack her in the face to get a good chase going on.
In the past I have had 2 half Moon Concurs at different times that drove me nuts, I wish I could have house broken them. I would leave their cage doors open and they would swoop down and give the cat a Nuggie, totally tame they both allowed me to cut one wings flight feathers and could be even taken outside and stay on my shoulder. Inside they ate my curtains and pooped down my back. We lost them both due I believe to the stress of moving so often.
Biggest loss of life I have discovered to caged birds is when the owners smoke pot, the fumes are bad for them. How do I know this, well I have had friends that lost their birds one after another and they smoked pot. Coincidence perhaps but even tobacco fumes are bad for birds.

I really get a kick out of the little guy, I went with a Senegal primarily because of how quiet they are, as I live in an attached town house. It's pretty entertaining when he climbs all over people, into shirts, out of sleeves, and breaks out the acrobatics in his play areas. :cheersmate:

I was given, if that's the proper term - long crazy story, a full grown Patagonian Conure when I was around 15-16. The poor bird was traumatized by the previous owner and her children. I made an attempt to rehabilitate it for almost a year, with very little success. At best, it eventually allowed my presence near it, without it trying to attack me.

We have two cats.
Lulu is my cat, and she is a pretty laid-back animal. She tolerates everything my kid dishes out with never a growl or a hiss. The weirdest thing she does is sleep on my head. Also, if you have had fish to eat that day, she will harass you.
Daisy is Vivi's cat, and we call her 'Special Ed.' Daisy's favorite place to sleep is inside an insulated grocery bag. She has been known to get into the cabinet where we keep the food and chew her way through the bag of dry food. She never saw something on a counter or a table that she didn't think would look better on the floor. She thought the Christmas tree was her own personal jungle gym. Daisy's favorite activity is, by far, grooming my husband. She will park herself on him and lick whatever part of him is closest (arm, leg, face, hair) for as long as he tolerates it. She is the sweetest cat God ever made, but she is strange.

I had a small horse that really liked fried chicken.
And another that would come at a run if you held up a can of soda, lemonade, anything in a can. Of course, then you had to give her a sip.
Also had a black tom cat that wandered into camp one day and I discovered he would hunt rabbits. Not point, not set, but still let me know where they were when he'd see me walk out. It was like he knew when I was going bunny hunting.

We currently have two kitties - Gabby and Lucy.
Gabby is 17 and a gray Persian and she is the queen. She believes she is in charge of the humans in this house, too. Other than a little limp from arthritis, she doesn't look at all to be 17. She is demanding of attention from me, and me only, and this involves jumping up on my lap and tapping me on my cheeks with her big paws if I do not pay immediate attention. She likes to bring us things in the middle of the night - very loudly.
Lucy is 7 and she's a blue point Himalayan with big blue eyes. We also refer to her as "Lucy-fer" as she is sometimes a devil cat. But every night when we go to bed, she will appear out of nowhere to tuck us in and expects the favor to be returned with a quick ear scratch. She has also taken to wanting me to build her a tent in our bed in the morning made up of pillows and blankets so she can spend the morning in there doing whatever it is she does. I actually prefer to make the bed but I cannot say no to that cute little face.

For a few months this past summer, my son and his girlfriend came to stay with us and brought along their cat, Tonks. Tonks is a strange little girl but a sweetie nonetheless. One day I came home and noticed the bottle of tequila was missing.

Blue, our oldest greyhound who will be 12 in April, isn't a herding dog. But the silly boy thinks that he is. He does the same herding with us. If I'm on the computer too late, he barks til I get off.
He also definitely lets us know exactly when he wants his food. In the morning after SR goes to work, Blue lazily wakes up around 10 and barks to go out, then barks for his food.

Blue, our oldest greyhound who will be 12 in April, isn't a herding dog. But the silly boy thinks that he is. He does the same herding with us. If I'm on the computer too late, he barks til I get off.
He also definitely lets us know exactly when he wants his food. In the morning after SR goes to work, Blue lazily wakes up around 10 and barks to go out, then barks for his food.
I love sighthounds. Had a Whippet and an Afghan at one point. The problem with herding greyhounds is that they have that height thing, which makes their leaning in a bit more treacherous. :)

I also love sighthounds. I used to have a very small greyhound, Tiny, who everyone thought was a whippet. She was a ringer----Tiny won all the smallest greyhound contests at greyhound gatherings.
Our other greyhound, Xena, is a definite herder. She herds the other dogs and often pushes poor Blue over. He's taller than she is, but is epileptic (though thankfully he's had no grand malls in over 3 1/2 years). His back legs are shaky.
The 3rd greyhound, Darlene, isn't a herder. She's a bouncer who taught Xena to bounce. She prongs like an antelope, just bounce, bounce, bounce all the time. She particularly bounces for food. :-)
