Don't panic, but anyone planning on using GPS in the southeastern US for the next month or so will likely want to make sure they have a fallback option. That's according to a flight advisory just issued by the FAA, which warns pilots that their GPS signal "may be unreliable or unavailable" due to "GPS tests" that the Department of Defense will be conducting between January 20th and February 22nd. Details are fairly light beyond that, but the FAA does note that when the "tests" occur they will be active for 45 minutes, and be followed by 15 minutes of off time -- additional notices to pilots will apparently be issued at least 24 hours prior to any test. Of course, while this particular advisory is directed at pilots, it will presumably will also affect all other GPS devices, as the FAA doesn't mention any GPS issues specific to aviation. The real question, however, is just what those mysterious "GPS tests" are -- if they're, in fact, GPS tests at all...

Something's going on up in space.  Remember the recent launch and return of the top secret space mission?

Local news reported on a magnetic pole shift and the airports have to realign their equipment for those that fly on instruments.

Vesta, the earth's poles and magnetic field are constantly changing:

Quote
ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2008) -- Earth's north magnetic pole is shifting and weakening. Ancient lava flows are guiding a better understanding of what generates and controls the Earth's magnetic field -- and what may drive it to occasionally reverse direction.
The main magnetic field, generated by turbulent currents within the deep mass of molten iron of the Earth's outer core, periodically flips its direction, such that a compass needle would point south rather than north. Such polarity reversals have occurred hundreds of times at irregular intervals throughout the planet's history -- most recently about 780,000 years ago -- but scientists are still trying to understand how and why.

I'm sure since the invention of GPS technology the plates have shifted.  One would think they'd need to be calibrated every now and then to compensate for this.  However, I like my theory that the aliens are coming better.

Ma'am, the earth's magnetic field and ground-based airport equipment have absolutely zero to do with the reliability or accuracy of a GPS unit.

Google is your friend.  It can help you keep your foot out of your mouth/keyboard.

OK Doc but this is the first time in my long life I have seen this Publicised on TV or in the newspaper.

Dad flew by the seat of his pants, not instruments, just a half full bottle of water so he could tell if he was flying upside down. As a Navy diver he knew enough to follow the bubbles to top side.

The Chinese launched a pair of "Chinese Finger Cuffs". The GPS satellites are now hindered from pointing the way.

The aliens are already here.  One lives in the White House.

Having worked with GPS before, I have an inkling as to what they're doing.

Yeah, but they won't let us lock him up at Area 51.  I already tried.

Pray tell, what does that inkling say?
