Panera Bread opens 3rd "pay what you wish" location

It's good to see that these haven't been shuttered because, hey, free eats. Fairness and decency is still the norm.

Panera Bread Co. will open a nonprofit restaurant Monday in Portland where customers can pay what they wish for food.

It's the third "Panera Cares" community cafe for the company and its first West Coast location.

Panera opened community cafes last year in Clayton, Mo., and Dearborn, Mich. The restaurants are owned and operated by a nonprofit arm of the national restaurant chain, which receives no profit from the business.

"In some ways it is a test for humanity," said Ron Shaich, founder of Panera who launched the concept for the company. "Will people step up and help each other or will they take advantage?"

So far, people have stepped up. Panera said about 20 percent of the visitors to the cafes leave more than the suggested amount, 20 percent leave less and 60 percent pay what is suggested...

Just wait till they get their first busload of DUmmies. They will stop that real quick when 100 DUmmies all go there and eat for free.

They are reaping what they sow - they were always ridiculously high for the amount of food you actually got.

Great food, though, but they'll learn a stiff lesson with this, and well for it.

Sounds to me that someone in the company has been studying how churches survive with only the collection plate passed around.

Some will put in a dollar and others change from their pocket.   Those who wish to see the Church going strong will add a $20 dollar bill and others a bit more.

It will be interesting to see how this works out in the public business where there is no guilt or reason to try to buy themselves into another reality.

You mean it will show if liberals are willing to put their OWN money where their mouth is and support poor people?

I bet they don't open one in Puerto RIco.  When I lived there the Macaroni Grill had to stop the honor system on the wine in the first week.

Oh for **** sakes, Vesta, that is NOT how churches survive. When people give in a church they know they're giving to help others out through charitable contributions and to keep operations up and running. They also understand a 10% tithe that's required. People that are going to be rushing into Panera are going to generally be a bunch of free-loaders with entitlement mentalities ecstatic about "getting over on someone". No church person gives 5% instead of 10% and thinks, "hey, I just got over on God."

This place will last about as long as that place in SLC.

I was going to say wait till the libtards get wind of this. That place will be shut down in a month. Liberals are super cheap.

They have to be:  when all their money goes to pot, cheap beer, Twinkies and Cheetos, there isn't much left for "other stuff".

Oh, a house, car, a woman at your side (if you're a guy) chilluns playing at your feet.  None of this is cheap, unlike the DUmbshits.

Not to mention that you can't judge by what's going into the collection plate.  I always give by a monthly donation, so am not always seen putting something into the plate.

Imagine how exhausting this has got to be when a liberal shows up at the counter:

"Oh, pay what I like? OK! Before I decide how much to pay, let me ask you: are your workers unionized? How many Republicans are on the board? Did Panera get any initial funding through the Koch brothers? Is there a television in any of the stores, and are any tuned to Fox? What is Panera's official policy toward DADT? Are any food products made from genetically altered ingredients? Is your coffee fair trade? Do you refuse service to Teabaggers? How many menu items are suitable for vegans?"

Oy.

The DUmmy mantra - gimme my free shit! :censored:

Fairness is whatever price a company can charge and still remain in business.  This free stuff won't last forever, DUmbasses.

I think I saw an expose on this place. Essentially they rely on other patrons paying MORE than what the menu prices are.

Ya, that's gonna last.

Wait until the first robbery, mugging, etc., in the parking lot. People become a helluva lot less charitable when the people they're trying to help f'em over. Probably why I don't generally like people.

For a DUmmy two words put all those concerns to rest:  "Free Eats"

My family had been givin' the church 10% for 4 generations! It's just somethin' we feel is our obligation!

One year after "Toots'" dad had a heart attack, they were really down on their luck at Christmas. He had been disabled by his doc and the red tape to get anything from good 'ol Uncle Sam was drawing out into it's 8th month!

They still had 2 kids at home and a another Daughter goin thru a divorce with three kids of her own in the house!

The Church made sure all the kids were taken care of and the Christmas dinner was one fit for a king, all furnished by those of us that readily donate our 10%!

One of the finest most fulfilling Christmases I can remember since my childhood! Nothin' beats giving to those that deserve our help! DUmmies on the other hand, that think we owe them, can go stand in line at the Mission for watered down turkey soup!
