Title: Surnow’s Kennedy Series Pulled by History Channel Due to Assclownery
Post by: The Hollywood NeoCon on January 10, 2011, 11:20:02 AM
Well, the Hysterically Leftist, er, History Channel didn't exactly say that, per se...
"Rigorous standards" of accuracy, my ass. "Ancient Aliens" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Aliens) and Howard Zinn's intellectual diarhea both seem to have made the cut, happily.  :loser:

According to The Hollywood Reporter, 24 creator Joel Surnow’s 8-part miniseries The Kennedys has apparently been cancelled by The History Channel after the show “was not considered historically accurate enough for the network’s rigorous standards.” The series stars Greg Kinnear, Katie Holmes and Tom Wilkinson.

I’m laughing at this, because just the other day while channel surfing I happened to notice that The History Channel is still running its rigorously accurate series Ancient Aliens, featuring theories on extraterrestrial visitations to our planet – theories explained by such noted, credible scholars as Erich von Däniken.

Greg Kinnear & Katie Holmes in "The Kennedys."

What a farce this decision is.

For the record, I know Joel professionally and am certain that he and his team have put together a show that more than merits a showing on a network that currently includes on its schedule such scrupulously accurate series as MonsterQuest, The Bible Code: Predicting Armageddon, Nostradamus Effect, The Real Face of Jesus?, Stan Lee’s Superhumans and UFO Hunters.

I've seen the trailer for this, and frankly it looks great. It also appears to be pointed and opinionated on the subject of the Kennedys (in other words, it's not entirely flattering) – but nothing out of bounds, from what I’ve thus far seen.

After all, don’t we already know that image and reality were often quite different with respect to the Kennedys? God forbid that discrepancy would actually be dramatized in a television series.

As a side note, The History Channel has just guaranteed a few more ratings points for this series when it eventually airs on another network (possibly Showtime, according to reports) – which it inevitably will.

I hope it comes out on DVD.  I would like to see it.  I am honestly shocked that they would shelve a project that had so many millions tied up in it.

Well, the History Channel didn't put a dime into this, but DID earlier state that they would air it before a single frame was shot, which gave Joel and his team the ability to attract both money and talent in order to get it made.

I have no doubt that it will eventually find a home, provided the Kennedy family isn't again able to get it quashed.

Whatever the case, you can bet your sweet ass I'm going to have it on DVD, as well, mamacags.

Addendum: Joel Surnow has never been particularly loved out here, given the wild popularity of "24" among conservatives. However, the real money in Hollywood is nothing, if not pragmatic, which leads me to believe he won't have a problem parlaying the History Channel's idiocy into a much better venue.

Frankly, for the last 50 years, we've been sold a load of horseshit.

"Ask not what your country can do for you...", but sold the American public as big a ball of socialist bullshit (unionizing government workers--something even FDR wouldn't do) as anyone.

Played the family man, well, that is, while he wasn't tag-teaming Marilyn Monroe.  Maybe that's where Ted got the idea for him and Chris Dodd to play "waitress sandwich."

Physically active and outdoorsy--well, when he wasn't half-baked from the Michael Jackson-eqse pharmaceutical cocktails he was popping.

Civil rights?  Puhleez--he wasn't interested in even THINKING about a new Civil Rights Act until AFTER the 1964 elections, if then.  Only LBJ's, "It's what Kennedy would have wanted" crap is what got it through--that and a whole shitload of Republican Senators.

Peacetime?  ****er almost started WWIII, and was building up forces in Vietnam to the point where LBJ was just continuing on a policy JFK started.

Anything else I'm missing here?  Jump right on in.

I certainly agree with your assessment of the Hitlery Channel, HNC, even their more-or-less actual history stuff is pretty lame.  Fifty years from now, when people with even a second-generation understanding of what actually happened in WW2 have left the scene, audiences watching those shows will wonder how the Hell it took six years to win the war if the Germans were such God-awful ****ed-up putzes as their shows make out.  Their stuff on military and civilian technological history varies from very good work to utterly horrible bundles of recycled manufacturer's propaganda.

However, I do have to say that, for my $.02, I have had all of the Kennedy legacy and Camelot than I can stand and it isn't something I'd watch anyway.
