Dick Winters, a decorated Army officer whose World War II service was recounted in the best-selling book and HBO mini-series "Band of Brothers," died Jan. 2. News reports listed his age at 92.
Based on the 1992 book by historian Stephen E. Ambrose, the HBO mini-series came out in 2001 and was produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.
The story follows the tragedies and triumphs of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, E Company.
To Mr. Winters, these citizen-soldiers came to be known as the men of Easy Company -- paratroopers who jumped into combat on June 6, 1944 above Normandy, France.
According to Ambrose's account, Easy Company suffered 150 percent casualties throughout the war.
One of the soldiers who served in Easy Company, David Webster, once wrote that among his colleagues the Purple Heart "was not a decoration but a badge of office."
Mr. Winters, who separated from the Army at the rank of major, and his men fought together through D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge and later occupied Adolf Hitler's mountainside retreat, the Eagle's Nest, near Berchtesgaden.
A charismatic officer who led by example, Mr. Winters received the Distinguished Service Cross, the country's second highest decoration for valor, while conducting combat operations on D-Day.

Sadly, I called this one on Sparky's 2011 Dead Pool.
Winters suffered from Parkinson's pretty badly over the last few years. His family had declined any more interviews and he had stopped answering letters - something that he did, personally, since the Band of Brothers book came out and his fame increased.
One helluva soldier.

I had the privilege of hosting a couple of E company men to talk to my students. They always spoke very highly of Maj. Winters. RIP and Godspeed.

I'm so grateful I had the opportunity to watch the entire "Band of Brothers" series just last month, thereby allowing me to get to know this great man before he left this world.
I'm still utterly amazed that his tactics while still a 2nd Lieutentant are taught at the US Military Academy to this very day.

I believe he'd been promoted to 1LT at the time of the Brecourt Manor fight, but that's a tiny point.
Nah, I'm not beating myself over it because I could see it coming when the Major's family pulled him out of the limelight. His Parkinson's was getting bad even when he did the interviews as part of BoB and that was back in 2000?
Now, Wild Bill Guarnere - that guy, sans leg, has been smoking cigarettes for 75 years if it's been a day and that crazy ol' bastard is still around, still has his marbles, and will probably be around long enough to piss on my grave.

I wanted to meet him and the others at the 62nd Annual reunion when it was held here in Omaha a few years ago. I didn't get to meet them but I did see his son there and thats when I heard Maj. Winters was sick but didn't know what from. RIP sir.
