Gov. Voldemort to sell off Florida's two planes, lay off 10 workers
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/politics/os-scott-p...
<snip>
One of Gov. Rick Scott's first acts this week was to make good on his campaign promise to effectively ground the state air fleet used to fly politicians around Florida.
"On the campaign, I said I was going to sell the state plane. It's a campaign promise I made, and I'm going to live up to it," Scott said.
Scott's office says the state could save $2.4 million in annual budgeted operating costs by shutting down Florida's two-plane fleet and laying off the 10 pilots, mechanics and other staff that keep it. But the task may be a bit trickier than it sounded on the stump.
<snip>
So Lizard Boy, who ran on a platform of bringing jobs to Florida, one of his very first actions is to do something that will cause at least 10 people to lose their jobs.
Another item in his cross-hairs is the high-speed train, which he's repeatedly said that he opposes. So he'll wind up axing that project, thus eliminating even more jobs that Floridians could have had.
And Voldemort's reign is just beginning...

Do you know why the high speed train is a bad idea?
It's a bad idea because it will end up costing the taxpayers of FL a ton of money. The feds may be funding the construction but, that money partially comes from the people in FL already, then the operating costs will cost the taxpayers of FL tons of money for years to come. When Governor Scott said he wants to create jobs he was talking about creating an environment for the private sector to thrive and have them create jobs. He wasn't talking about govt jobs.

They had a state referendum on High Speed Rail that the people passed back when Jeb was Governor. They caught him on tape commenting that he didn't care what the voters said he was stopping the project. Which caused a wee bit of trouble. :whistling:
The idea isn't bad. The fact it's got so much Government fingers in it is realllly bad though. If they could build it for a reasonable price and charge a reasonable price then it will be the greatest thing to happen around here.
Reality says it's going to cost to much to start with, go way way over budget and cost 2 arms and a testicle to ride it due to Government involvement.

That's why I think it's a bad idea. Every time the govt has one of these "shovel ready" projects it ends up costing more.

Outside of the East Coast hellhole and Chicago, EVERY mass transit service is just a bottomless money pit that does nothing but move empty, or nearly empty, vehicles around from one place to another, operated by highly-paid union thugs. It's the same in the East Coast hellhole and Chicago, except there the vehicles are jammed with people. They all soak up enormous amounts of taxpayers' hard-earned dollars, because every one operates at a huge loss, and always will. Liberals love mass transit projects because they create democrat union jobs and democrat campaign funds. Everyone wins except the taxpayer.

Once again the DUmmies show how little they know of what and who creates jobs in this country.
-
High-speed rail, when you're talking just all-welded rail and highly-maintained rights-of-way and rolling stock designed for high speed operation, costs more but doesn't save any huge amount of time over ordinary rail for runs under 100 miles. When you start getting into gee-whiz stuff like MagLev, it is very technologically sexy and certainly fast, but the cost of the infrastructure is like building a conventional railroad's roadbed out of bales of $100 bills...and building one with any commercially-feasible passenger throughput over a distance beyond an airport connector spur (Which is really so short that ordinary light rail would do just as well in reality) is completely unexplored territory. High-speed rail projects are the ultimate white elephant.

So, 10 jobs are being lost, with an annual savings of 2.4 million dollars. That is $240,000 per job, but the DUmmies are upset. Yet another example of their complete lack of fiscal sense. :whatever:

Certified Airplane Mechanics are in demand always. The pilots might have a bit more of a problem, like relocating but they'll get jobs too. They aren't a dime a dozen like union auto workers.
-
At least the Gov is keeping his promise. How many of the Big Eard Kenyans been kept?
-
Dear DUmmies,
Big Dig. Look it up. Learn from it.

If there was money to be made in passenger rail, I have a funny feeling that Burlington Northern, or Union Pacific would be doing it. Instead, they lease the rails to Amtrak.
I think if TSA keeps going and as a passenger you have to FedEX your stuff to your destination to avoid checked bag fees, or a strip search of grand ma, it is just a bit much to drive much more than 900 miles.
But let private business do it. They will see the financial gain, vs. the govt that does not care if there is a need, they just build it to aliveate global warming.

Florida's current 1st leg for High Speed Rail is to have it run from Tampa to Orlanda, which is about a 1 1/2 hour drive. Tops. The railway stations will be outside of the cities (under current proposals). So you drive to the outskirts, pay for parking, get your ticket and go to the city you want to. You get there...then what? You'll have to take a taxi or rent a car (more money down the toilet). Public transportation in Florida (buses) is a joke. It's practically non-existant. It's not like we have subways down here. It's a major boondoggle. How many people are really going to use this albatross when it's faster and more economical to use your own car?
-
I remember when Mayor Glenda Hood (Orlando) was pushing the high speed rail idea, even though its obviously a boondoggle for this state. I personally went to her office to have a chat with her but she was out. I left her a note asking her "who are you trying to "hoodwink" with this project?"
It was obvious at the time she was going to get tremendous kick backs from it.
It would no doubt end up being perpetually in the red needing tax payer bailouts every year just as Amtrak does.
The elites just cant wait to force us "little people" into mass transit while they exempt themselves and make a tidy sum from it.
Hell, the buses cost us something like a 1/4 - 1/3M $ a pop just to build, let alone maintain and your lucky to ever see more than 2 or 3 people on them at any one time ... for the most part. Lucky they mask the windows as they do or even more people would be outraged.
We are so blessed to have politicians who only care for us ... /s

The state of Florida has only two state planes? I'll bet the University of Florida athletic department has more than that.

True. WI's Governor Walker is facing the same dilemmas as Gov. Voldemort. (Sorry. Must resist jokes.) This is something WI, and FL desperately must stop. It just piles on mountains more debt.

Even if it's only HellCare, it's at least one too many.
