Republicans kill global warming committee

Thursday 6 January 2011

Kate Sheppard for Mother Jones

The kick-off of the 112th Congress on Wednesday also marked the end of an era in the House – the demise of a committee devoted solely to climate change and energy issues. The Select Committee for Energy Independence and Global Warming, created by Nancy Pelosi in 2006, has been shuttered under the new Republican leadership. In the final days of the committee, staffers released a report on what the committee accomplished in its brief tenure – an epitaph of sorts.

Tackling issues from the politicisation of climate science to the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon, the committee held 80 hearings and briefings. It played a role in shaping policy for the 2007 energy bill, the 2009 stimulus package (which included $90bn <$58bn> in energy, efficiency, and other green elements), and, of course, the 2009 climate bill (the one that never became law, of course, because the Senate didn't act on it).

The final report concludes with the question of whether the United States will respond to all the information that the committee has compiled during its lifespan on the climate and energy challenge:

Someday, our children and grandchildren will look back on the record of the Select Committee. That record will reflect a respectful and rigorous debate and an unprecedented understanding of the challenges before us. Whether or not they will see that this generation has taken the bold action required by these challenges remains to be seen.

I saw this at the Guardian and wanted to post it myself but did the obligatory dupe-check. As a side note I'd like to mention the advertisement in the right margin of the Guardian site was selling a 4 DVD set "celebrating" 50 years of Cuban history.

13. global warming committee, next the entire EPA?
The tea party has been very vocal in opposition to EPA regulations. They may move to kill individual regulations or to even abolish the entire department. It wouldn't clear the Senate or the veto, but the possibility of starving the funding of the department would be devastating.

Working on it.

Global oil production is at a plateau and will decline as all the major fields become exhausted in the next few decades.

Easily extracted coal reserves are similarly being exhausted. Although US and China have extensive remaining reserves, these are either geographically remote, in thin seams, or deep.

We have already produced half of the CO2 that will ever be produced from fossil fuels. The other half won't cause a significantly greater problem.

The blather about "peak oil" is bullshit...but if it gets them to shut-up.

Can liberalism be better defined than this worthless committee?  They claim global warming is an urget issue, form a committee that does nothing but talk about it for 4 years, and then cry because the worthless committee can't sit around another 2 years and talk about it while doing nothing.  It's like the war on poverty or any of the other nonsense they embrace; results don't matter to the libs, just the symbolism that they really care.

Things like OSHA, the EPA, etc., should enforce the laws made by Congress and signed into law by the President. Not create their own f'n laws, without Congressional input or oversight. That is a HUGE problem with executive committees and administrations, and something that needs to be cut the hell out. Laws aren't supposed to originate in the Executive office.

Put an ice cube in some area where the temperature is slightly above freezing and try to have the patience to watch it melt completely. Now, apply that to the sheer volume of ice on the entire planet.

Next, throw a pebble against a freight train and see if that stops it.

You've got your answer to how much humanity impacts climate, which is zero, just like your intelligence. :loser:

Now, wait just a minute here. Weren't you idiots the ones that were saying that unless we do something NOW! NOW! RIGHT NOW! DON'T WAIT FOR TOMORROW, IT HAS TO BE NOW!!! that it will be too late to stop global warming, for decades now? And now you say that it will be a few decades before "global warming becomes critical"? So, which is it, you loons?

The correct answer, is neither. There is no global warming (except from natural causes like Mr. Sun), and we won't be running out of oil and coal anytime soon, especially when we have so much oil shale. Any energy problems we may be facing is because of people like you constantly preventing us from exploring and drilling for oil (never mind that you don't seem to have problems with other countries doing the same thing, even near our shorelines), and building new refineries and nuclear power plants. You're like the cholesterol that blocks the flow of life-giving fuel to the nation.

Oh, and I still haven't gotten an answer on my question: What is the correct temperature of the earth?

There is actually 'forbidden' science that speculates that petroleum is only partially from decomposing dead things, and that the vast majority of it is a byproduct of plate tectonics -- basically suggesting that one will find oil anywhere if one digs deep enough. -- It explains why formerly 'dry' wells end up with oil in them again

And even more interesting is the 'Expanding Earth' theory..

The short version.. the core of the earth is a dynamic, molten object - and has a problem cooling off because of the crust of the earth, and gravity keeping it contained. This creates a reactor effect, where less dense elements are created and they push upward and outward, including hydrocarbons such as Petroleum, and natural gas. These lighter elements actually have pushed the surface of the earth outward, and over time have caused (and continue to cause) the planet to enlarge.

In short - Pangaea was a mega-continent on a mini earth, and it broke apart from internal forces as lighter elements rise from the core - like the way the crust on a loaf of bread fractures as it rises while baking..  ANd if this theory is correct, there will be more petroleum made by the earth as long as its core continues to be active.
