I Keep Hearing About The Rich Moving To Florida To Avoid State Income Tax......
how does Florida do it? How can they provide services, etc without a state tax? Or Are they now in trouble like most states? I know at least two wealthy people that moved to Florida in the past couple of years. What gives?

I'm not sure, but when I read DUmmy globalnumber's post, I get a faint whiff of mole sweat.

1. TN does not have a state income tax. sales tax is high.

Sales tax state plus local    9.75% max. (adjusted downward for large purchases like autos)
State income tax     zero
Local income tax      zero
Let's see, would I prefer that, or a democrat state with high sales tax, plus high state income tax, plus high local income tax, plus public services as bad as any in Red State Hell? Let me noodle that for a while.

2. Is Tenn Having Financial Problems? .......
if not an they are prospering - why don't other states follow suit?

A few years ago, as the Tennessee democrat party was in its death throes, it tried to force a state income tax through the legislature. On the day of the vote, a large crowd gathered at the state capitol, and actually broke out a few windows. The tax, and nearly every politician who didn't strongly oppose it, lost. The democrat party went from a majority to something like a 30-70 minority in state government.

9. TN does have a tax on investment income (dividends, etc.) of 6%
Tennessee Individual Income Tax

The "Hall Tax"
The Hall Tax is a strange one. I suspect compliance with it is about like the income tax in Italy. Many Tennesseans don't even know it exists, and it makes you feel like a fool when you pay it.

4. Texas doesn't have state tax either
We pay 8.25% sales tax in Dallas. Texas does it by being at the bottom of all the good things lists and at the top of all the bad things lists. I mean services and whatnot are minimal, at best. Texas supposedly has been better off than a lot of places economics wise, but really this next budget is going to be a nightmare and a great many people are going to suffer.

DUmmy proud2BDUmb Anne continues to embarrass herself, and those who voted for her, with lame posts. Let's hope she is hung over from celebrating her Top DUmmy victory:

12. 10% sales tax here AND we have state income tax too
Services used to be great in Kansas but not so much anymore. Thank you Republicans. Not.

I don't know Kansas politics, but I'm surprised if repukes are responsible for their high taxes.

14. exactly...half-paved streets and bridges...except near Cowboy Stadium.
Parkland Hospital OVERFLOWING with the uninsured(and it's already huge)
Texas definitely has a distinction between the Haves and have-nots.

Just as a favor to the DUmmies, most of whom use the ER as their primary care physician, I will give them the secret to quick service in the emergency room: Just go in wearing a windbreaker with "ICE" in large letters on the back. The crowd will disappear.

13. I don't like the weather in Florida
Every time I have ever been to Florida, it has rained. And then it's humid. Yuck. We have humidity here in boring Kansas. Why leave and go to another humid place? LOL

After the Super Bowl, I saw an on-field interview with Tom Brady, and he shouted, "I'm going to Kansas!"

We don't have a state income tax in Nevada either, but you end up paying for it through your registration on your vehicle(s).

The Jaguar was about $130 when I bought it.  The GTO was close to $300 this year.  F@#$ that.  They base your registration prices off the value of your car.  I loved Wisconsin because it was only $80 a year to register the car.

Our sales tax is 8.25% I think.  And then the property taxes are out of control, but we do not have a house.  So we don't have to pay $2,300-$3,000 in property taxes.

I'd live in Florida if there weren't so many old people and hurricanes.  Not that I dislike old people, but they drive too slow.

Here in Red State Hell, it's $50 per year.

Well we have a federal income tax - which is a graduated scale. I pay 45% on the bulk of my income.

We have federal GST which applies to pretty much anything of 10%.

We have federal fuel excise and pay $1.30ish per liter of Diesel. A large part of which goes to the gummint.

We have vehicle registration per state  - My 2 seat 6 cylinder pickup costs circa 780 per year. That includes 3rd party insurance only.

We have local government rates - which pays for fire , garbage , sewage and a minute percent of water use. 1200 per half year. I have a quarter acre block.

If my land had an unimproved value of more than 500K - I'd pay land tax as well. I don't know how much that is off the top of my head.

What do I get for it ?

A road and rail system that is simply ghastly more than 1000 miles from the state capital, and some overpriced services. A police service that couldn't find their ass with a 1:1 scale map - and refuse to respond to some types of events unless there's a canine unit available and have a wait time of circa 45 minutes. A ("single payer") health care system that makes one envious of what they have in places like Mogadishu. And so on.

Don't ever think that the more you pay the government has any bearing on the quantity or quality of the services received in return.

Not really, down there, most who are over the hill are settled into their golf carts in the trailer parks. The ones still out on the road do have the rage though. They will get out of the car and fight you! Most are from NY and NJ ya know.

Sounds pretty normal to me. I paid almost 300 this year on a 4 yr old Silverado work truck and I am in SC.

DUmbass Anne really shouldn't base the weather in Florida on her visits during the summer. People who live here hate the summers, it's the curse of living in Florida.

The times to stay away from Florida for Kansas teachers is October-April. It's the dry season here and it rarely rains at all. The humidity is down along with the sun intensity. All-in-all it's a really really bad time of year to live here in Florida Anne, you should stay in Kansas and enjoy your snow and cold, smug in your experiences and belief that it's to hot and humid here during the winter.  :whatever:

Around $70 for registration of our cars in Dallas and no state tax. When we moved to the stupid state of CA it was a little over $600 to register my car and just under $500 for my husband's car (and to top it off we had to pay taxes AGAIN on our cars because they were basically new-er). We have almost 10% state tax, our property tax is over $10k, high sales tax, a tax on soda, next they will tax the air we breathe....oh and add to that high fed tax.  We are taxed to death. With all these taxes the state is taking from everyone it should be in the black with plenty to spare yet it is bankrupt. I would love for a DUer to come here and tell us how the government just needs to tax us a little more.

Yeah, $55 to register both of my cars here in Texas (sorry BEG).  8.25% sales tax.  W8lifting lady and justabob?  Go f yourself.  The reason why Dallas is turning into a dump is because of people like you.  The Mayor had an outstanding proposal to get Dallas out of the red, but y'all were too damn scared and voted for increasing property taxes.  Again.   :thatsright:   That is why everyone is moving out of Dallas you dumb fools.

The real question is why the states with high income tax, sales tax, property tax, gas tax, and registration tax are also the ones with the largest budget deficits?

Kalifornia, Illinois, Michigan,...

The common thread is that these states have had a communist democrat controlled legislature longer.

Don't forget to add in the price to "smog" your car too.  Our fee for smog is about $30 a year on top of registration.  Not sure how much they charge you over in California.

No income tax, no sales tax.

However, property taxes are high (I paid almost $5K last year.)  Vehicle registration runs about $350-400/year plus inspection for the Jeep.  If you go out, you're looking at a "meals and room" tax of 9 percent.  Toll roads everywhere, and where you don't have them, the roads suck.

Here in Red State Hell, it's $50 per year.

I paid $58 for 2 years up here in God's Country. We do have a state income tax, but it ain't much. Our sales tax is 6%. Property taxes are fair, since we actually have 4 seasons up here, and the damage to roads is an on going process. They repave the highway out front every 4 years.

Right next door in WA, their roads suck big time! This time of year, a Volt would flat disappear in one of their pot holes! Their sales tax is around 9%, property taxes are thru the roof, but they have no income tax. They make it up in Excise taxes! Cigs, and liquor are to expensive to buy! They all come over here to buy their vices, autos, furniture, etc. The State Police regularly stage interdiction's to catch the scofflaws! They confiscate your goods and fine ya $200!

Illinois has a 6.25 % sales tax and a flat 3% income tax, at least for now.  However, counties and cities add their own sales taxes.  Locally the total sales tax is 10%.

That actually sounds pretty low,  considering the percentage of Illinois public employees who are long deceased.
