    <snip>

PG&E said Thursday residential customers who use relatively little power will experience a 3 percent increase in rates starting Jan. 1.

Those who draw large amounts of electricity, on the other hand, will get a 2.6 percent rate cut.

It's called bulk buying. :)  My place of work pays a lower rate than some others, but they also agree to minimize usage during a peak demand period if needed.

We need a 3000 page utility reform bill that will raise the price 25%.

Sorry, but if true, that is total bullshit.

I can believe it.  For several years we had a slight water shortage, and were always being told to conserve.  Early in 2010 the city raised the water rates, and they specifically said it was because of lowered demand.

I thought they were going to crack down on vile words? I thought I saw that in the new rules?

SAN FRANCISCO -- Electricity bills for some Pacific Gas and Electric Co. customers will climb slightly in the new year while others will see their rates decline.

Actually, the rate structure in California is incredibly unfair.  They have summer and winter "baseload", which frankly are pathetically small.  Even a "conservative" customer is paying upwards of 20 cents per KwH, and God help you if you go above 200-300 percent of baseline, which means you're looking at 30 cents per KwH or more.

Of course, I'd love to get a break, considering that I'm paying $90-100 a month for about 400-450 KwH per month.

In Florida we have a set rate. The more you use, the more you pay. And vice versa versa. Imagine that.

Right...but imagine paying 3-4 times more for double your usage, which is not at all uncommon in the summer months.  I knew people who lived in hot (Victorville) areas who were paying over $1000 a MONTH for electricity simply because they ran the AC during the day when it was 110 out--who knew???

Imagine if you will having a baseline of about 300 KwH/month.  That ain't shit.  I don't run much and I'm still at 450 KwH a month.  Under 130 percent of baseline you're looking at about 15 cents per KwH, plus "wires" charges.  If you used 750-800 KwH a month, by that point you're now paying in excess of 30 cents per KwH.  Definitely a screwed up system.

Hell, even in nice "cool" coastal areas such as where I lived I sometimes saw electric bills in excess of $300/month even with my employee discount.  Compare that to what my Dad was paying in Arizona on a "level pay" plan of just over $200/month.

We have a set kwH rate but the TVA likes to slip in some kind of 'user' fee every once in a while.  They put one in this year to much bitching and complaining.  Overall it's not too bad, but then the cost of living down here can be extraordinarily cheap.

Perfect conservative system.

I agree, but then again spreading the wealth is a liberal way of thinking.

Is it my fault their house is smaller or they might like it colder in the winter?

I don't know where it lives, but in Georgia, I don't think the GA PSC would allow it.

The DUmp OP, like everything else at the DUmp, is bullshit. In every power system in the country, probably every system in the world, small users like single family homes pay a higher rate per kwh than bulk consumers like factories. Can you think of a commodity that isn't cheaper per unit when purchased in bulk? Bulk consumers may pay an enormous bill each month, but at a lower rate per unit. The DUmp OP is just another feeble effort to promote class envy among the DUmbasses.

Are you in NC?

NC wanted to raise taxes over lost revenue from mandated water restriction usage.

I think Raleigh may have done this.

It is undoubtedly in the works, but will raise prices by 300% to save the environment and reduce global climate change.   :thatsright:

I'm in Illinois.  Several years ago during a severe water shortage , the city banned watering lawns and even requested that car washes voluntarily shut down.  The city was caught running their sprinkler system around the civic center.
