Cash-strapped Cuban government slashes state-subsidised soap from ration books
The cost of cleanliness will rise in Cuba after its cash-strapped, communist government announced Wednesday that soap, toothpaste and detergent will be slashed from monthly ration books.
Cuba's official Gazette said that effective Jan. 1, "personal cleanliness products" will join a growing list of products cut from the ration books that islanders have come to rely on for a small but steady supply of basic goods.
Cubans currently pay about 25 centavos, or about a penny, for a rationed bar of soap. They'll soon have to fork out four to six pesos, according to the gazette.
The list of products available with the ration books has shrunk in recent months as the government trimmed items deemed nonessential. Cigarettes, salt, peas and potatoes have been cut. Sugar, beans, meat, rice, eggs, bread and other products remain.
is the fault of the US?

Yep the blame lays right at the feet of George W Bush.
:whatever:
But hey according to Mikey Moore they have the bestest health care system ever so it won't matter if they can't have soap they still get free health care. :whatever:

Absolutely, you can starve and stink away in a first class hospital.

Wait!
You're telling me supply, demand and prices still apply in command economies?
I thought the price would be whatever the Central Committee, acting in the best interests of the people, deemed was appropriate?
How could I have been so naive?

never take such stuff back home with them. They just leave it for the locals to use when they leave the island and often carry soap around with them to just give away in the street too - been like that for at least 10 years.
Overall yes it is a bi-product of the embargo and the Cuban people know that too.
Apparently soap has become a form of currency in Cuba (and yes, the French still make lousy tippers) and apparently the US is the only manufacturer and supplier of soap in the entire world.
Hopefully once they start pumping oil with help from either Russia or China , maybe even both ,their foreign reserve situation will improve substantially.
So what was the excuse when Cuba was a wholly-owned subsidiary of the USSR?
btw - these constant references by the US media to $20 a month is only half of a story at best. That's expressed in convertible pesos which are loosely related to the US$ despite the fact that possession of US$'s outside of the Cuban government has been an imprisonable offence since GWB accused Fidel Castro of money laundering.
I blame Bush for Castro!
Things will start to change anyway by spring next year when small private enterprises become legal.
A defense of communist despotism seeking salvation in greedy slef-centered profiteering.

1. A "Ration" booklet is nothing more than a discount coupon booklet, used at gov discount stores.

Every Cuban gets one a month.
The government stores are shifting to provide only foodstuffs, purchased at a negotiated volume price, that are being grown at the numerous co-ops and newly privatized farms.
For every CDR office there is at least one gov discount store.
No one goes hungry in Cuba.
Feel free to hop in a tube and float there then. I'm sure Castro will welcome you with open arms.

Hey stupid. Stupid. Cuba is it's own Country. They are communist. Do you understand communism?
What does any of that have to do with America? Stupid is strong tonight every night on the DUmp.

Well Bush was president from 2001 to 2009 so it was his fault. :-)

No one goes hungry in Cuba.
...even those who vocally disagree with the Cuban government. They just go to prison and get a little less to eat than everybody else.

Well they certainly don't have to worry about obesity over there! :fuelfire:
Maybe Mikey Moore needs to go live there for a while. I'm sure his health will improve when he drops a couple of hundred pounds. I bet the soap shortage wouldn't bother him either since he looks like he doesn't bath more than once a month.
:-)

Funny how my Cuban friend has a different story.
This gentleman fled Cuba about 15 years ago and is still honorably serving in the US military (including multiple deployments to the middle east) is not to be listened to because some moron read something on the internet. ::)
The stories that he has told me are heartbreaking about the average citizen in Cuba and he is still trying to get what is left of his family out of that hell hole.
