Bitching about people celeberating Christmas while LAGC celebrates Christmas:

Did Anyone NOT Celebrate X-mas Yesterday?
Our family had a tree and a nice dinner, a few small gifts/cards were exchanged, but nothing bank-breaking like so much extravagant spending so many people put on these days, racking up massive credit card debt and trying to out-do each other in true capitalist fashion.

I can't help but think how much saner the holidays would be if everyone followed the Jehovah's Witnesses philosophy. They don't believe in throwing parties/celebrations, not even birthday parties. Of all the disparate Christian groups out there, I have a lot of respect for them for sticking to their beliefs despite extreme societal pressure. These are people who in Germany defied the Nazis by refusing to "Heil Hitler" and worship the Nazi flag, and they were rounded up and put in concentration camps for it, given Purple Triangles to identify them in the camps.

Here's to them -- and all those that didn't get caught up in the capitalist excess that X-mas represents anymore -- happy holidays!

And yet once again no love for the Jews and the gypsies and the gays and the handicappen and others that also went to those camps for much of the same reasons. I guess its ok to pick and choose your heros at the DUmp when it comes to which groups you support that died in the camps.

I didn't celebrate X-mas, I celebrated Christmas.

As for it's other comment, Jehovah witnesses are to be admired for their resolve because it conforms to Scrooge LAGC's tightwad idea of how Christmas should be run(who wants to bet too LAGC didn't give any gifts or cards, but got one from each and every family member there?  :whatever:) I'm certain there is no pressure within any church including a JW church, to conform to certain standards.  :whistling: Everyone conforms to norms or cultural 'pressures' if you will. A JW is no exception. One could argue that bouncies on DU are done in the interest of conforming to the norms and standards of DU, no matter how daft they may be, and the bouncy is an attempt to fit in and be considered a good primitive by conforming to the culture of DU.

What always cracks me up about these dimwits is if they were in some 3rd world shithole and asked to participate in some ridiculous and outright dangerous religious custom or cultural tradition, they'd do it in a heartbeat and 'conform to the cultural pressures of the 'exotic' 3rd world culture'  :rotf:, then pat themselves on the back for being tolerant and inclusive and open-minded, but buy a tree, wrap a gift, and put up a little tinsel in the TRADITION(not religion) of this country and they are folding to societal pressure. :lmao: Morons! :lmao:

Jehovah's Witnesses do not follow traditional Christian customs.

Quote
Weddings, anniversaries, and funerals are observed, though they avoid incorporating certain traditions they see to have pagan origins.[129][130] They may use rings in wedding ceremonies; The Watchtower acknowledges that wedding rings were first used by pagans,[131] but states that their origin does not rule out their use for Christians.[132] Witnesses typically observe wedding anniversaries, with the Watch Tower Society noting that wedding anniversaries apparently do not stem from pagan origins.[133]

Other common celebrations and religious or national holidays such as birthdays, Halloween, and Christmas[134] are not celebrated because they believe that these continue to involve "false religious beliefs or activities."[135][136][137] Watch Tower Society publications rule out the celebration of Mother's Day because of a claimed link with pagan gods[138] and concerns that giving "special honor and worship" to mothers is a form of creature worship" that could turn people away from God.[139] The Society also directs Witnesses to shun May Day, New Year's Day and Valentine's Day celebrations because of their pagan origins.[140]

Their opposition to birthdays is said to be based on how the Bible presents them. Watch Tower Society publications note that the only birthday celebrations explicitly mentioned in the Bible are those of an unnamed Pharaoh and Herod Antipas, and that both were associated with executions, and neither celebrant was a servant of God.[141] (Though some religions interpret Job 1:4 to indicate birthday feasts of Job's sons, Jehovah's Witnesses interpret them as a circuit of feasts from one house to the next.)[142] The Bible does not show Jesus or his apostles celebrating birthdays and The Watchtower claims the absence of any record of the date of the birth of Jesus or his apostles indicates that "God does not want us to celebrate any of these birthdays".[143]

Other significant points where they differ from many - regardless of the religion.

They do not sing national anthems or any other patriotic song,  nor say the Pledge of Allegiance.

They do not believe in blood transfusions, but a bone marrow transplant is up to the recipient.

They believe in a patriarchal family. The husband has total control of the family, the wife is to be submissive to the husband....but he is not to abuse the wife.

Women are to dress and behave modestly.

The Jehovah Witness site will give a great deal more info, but I really did not want to go into it and end up getting contacted by them.  :(

JW's believe that abortion is murder.

I tried to find out about voting, but couldn't find anything. I don't think they are allowed to vote, at least I have heard that they aren't. They may not publish it, because it's a constitutional right, and they don't want potential converts to know that they will not be allowed to vote.

Many years ago a Jehovah's Witness told me that only 300,000 of the best would be allowed into heaven. I asked him, "Then why are you going door to door trying to get more to join? I'd be trying to improve my chances by getting some to quit."

So not celebrating a traditional Christmas with presents, dinners, parties, trimmed trees, etc is the same as rejecting Nazism?

What?!?

**** you, idiot DUmmie.

What a sad and horrible existence your life is.  I would love to say that I feel sorry for you but I would be lying; I think you should roll in your misery until it consumes you.

Had a good friend in Jr High that his family was JW. He hated it with a passion! It hurt him immensely to see the rest of us celebrating! I got him out of the house one Christmas with a lie we were going skiing! He spent the day with our family and had one helluva time! We had gifts for him under the tree and dinner with all the trimmings!

The guy thought I was the best thing since sliced bread after that! We lost touch over the years, but I can still see the smiles on his face from the happiness we brought him!

I remember him every Christmas as one of the few really good deeds I have done!

None of the JW churches I've seen have windows. I went to one with a friend in Horn Lake, Ms. that didn't have any either.

Now that you mention it, they don't have any windows in any of their "Halls". Not sure why the hell that is! Maybe they don't want us to watch the "sacrifice" every Sunday.

I'm aware of that, Deb. My point was that JW's conform to their traditions, routines, cultural pressures like anyone else. I'm merely mirroring the primitives argument for him to understand that. JW's do in indeed conform to their own standards set forth by other JW's--they are nothing more exceptional then the people the dummie is seeking to scorn. Just because he agrees with their standards does not mean they are under any less pressure then others in their group as that which the dummie doesn't like.  That's the point I was making.

Not all of'em. Some of those freaks are still living in trailers.

BTW, they ALL live in trailers while their houses are built, and one year after it's built. They line the windows with aluminum foil to keep the demons out.

Bunch of f'n kooks. Oh, their daughters? Well, Jon Benet Ramsey looks homely compared to their daughters. They dress their daughters up like Tammy Faye Baker.

Where I saw them was called Murphy Village, near Augusta. 60 Minutes did a show there. They fan out all over the country running home improvement scams in the summer.

While the women and children try to steal everything in town that's not tied down. One trick they have is to buy something at a low price, change the sticker and return it for a higher price. They have all kinds of scams going.

Sorry, jty..I misunderstood what you wrote. I thought you meant they conform to the traditional Christian faith practices - ie..celebrating Christmas, Easter, etc.

Many of my better friends growing up were JW's and Mormons.  I don't agree with their religious viewpoints, but I will say they were good, trustworthy people, and their sense of devotion to their families was to be admired.
