Four Hundred Mile Round Trip For A Job Interview
Edited on Sat Dec-25-10 09:00 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
My fiancee has a job interview on Thursday which will require us to make a four hundred mile round trip from Orlando to Fort Lauderdale. Since money is scare we will do it in one day. I offer this as proof to those who believe the unemployed aren't earnestly looking for work...
I feel as optimistic as one can feel about this opportunity as my fiancee has already had phone interviews with the comptroller and the human resources director.
Ironically, we just moved back to Orlando in October when my fiancee's job was outsourced to Dallas when her company was acquired by another one that chose to replace her and three of her colleagues accounting positions with existing staff... I feel like a ping pong...
What part of India is Dallas in?! When I think of 'outsourcing' I don't think of Dallas? What about the rest of you?

I think I found the root of your problem. :p
-
So... why not move to Dallas when the job went there too?
-
500 miles round trip for a job interview? Add a zero and you'll be close to my mileage for my last job interview.

That's what I was thinking. Hell BEG and her husband moved to the People's Republic of Kalifornia. Why couldn't some Floridian move to Texas?

Sounds as if this democrat DUmbass depends on his shackup girl to put food on the table, kinda like Jeanette and the Las Vegas Whale. I'm shocked.

I caught that, too.
500 miles isn't unrealistic. I've done that much and more. And money is tight? So what. Pack a couple sandwiches, take your own water.
Good grief, some of them will whine about anything.

Four Hundred Mile Round Trip For A Job Interview...If she was keeping my ass up in a style I liked, I'd drive it in a skinny minute....no questions asked.

This is something I guess I've never been able to fathom. Dad was a heavy construction worker, mostly ironwork, coal loadouts, crushers, and the like. With the exception of a couple of years in high school, from the age of 7 until I joined the Navy after graduating high school, 3-4 moves a year was normal for me, to the point I've literally woken up to my parents telling me to get my ass to school so I can sign out because the house has to be packed TONIGHT for a 1000 mile move (Farmington, NM, to Gillette, WY.)
And no, we didn't hire movers. We packed, boxed, and loaded everything ourselves. Got pretty good at it too.
FWIW, when Dad finished that job, we moved back to Farmington--or at least I did. He put me up in an apartment (folks had just divorced) while he went to work a job in Kayenta, AZ.
ETA: Bottom line, if you're serious enough about providing for yourself and your family, you'll work. Whatever, wherever, whenever.

So true.
I've been looking for jobs not only in Las Vegas, but also closer to family. My husband is having a hissy fit, because his job is here. Whatever. I don't care. It's depressing not being able to provide for the family too. And I've only been able to find maybe three jobs a WEEK to apply for in Las Vegas. It's pathetic.

Oh, believe me, I've taken more than my fair share of grief for taking a job out east. But looking back, I think it's been a good thing for me. I'm doing okay, in a stable job that I enjoy. I also found out where I really stood with my now ex. She didn't understand that love of family goes beyond distance. She was more in love with a zip code than with me, but I'm fine with that. It's also her doom that she's stuck in CA in a job that doesn't pay shit compared to what she was making just a few years ago, along with all the other drama she's dealing with now.

My husband is trying to get a job with the railroad his dad works for, but he hasn't scored an interview with them yet. He wants to move too, but he wants to make the money. But, I'm really not that happy out here in Las Vegas anymore. It's a fun city, but the job situation here is very depressing. I just want to leave. I've been nothing but miserable since I lost my job.

I was thinking that the 400 miles is only 200 miles one way. That can be easily done in less than three hours. Three hours there, interview and three hours back. Home before dinner.
Why is this a problem?
The only snag I can see is that the trek is being made by a DUmmy. They probably own a Prius or some such super sub compact and can only do 45 MPH, top speed. In the left lane.

Good thing the Obozo passed the "stimulus" bill so quickly, huh DUmmies?! We would have a ton of people unemployed. Good thing he passed those "jobs" bills as well, huh DUmmies?!
What I'm getting at is, the DUmmies complain about no work or being unemployed and yet they still embrace the Obozo after he dupes them with bills that that DO NOTHING for employment and the economy. STUPID!
-
I've done 400 miles round trip as a commute before. A man does what a man needs to do. But being a DUmp denizen you wouldn't know about that would you DUmmie?

Whatever you do, don't go into the interview with her.

400 miles ain't SHIT!
I drove a delivery van for 20 years, on 6 different routes that rotated every 2 weeks.
My shortest route was 265 miles.
The longest was 720, which was followed by a 425 mile and a 540 mile route, on 3 consecutive days!
The following week, the 720, a day off, a 375, a 265, and a 340.
I made between 25 to 150 stops/route, depending on the load.
I averaged between 65,000 to 85,000 miles a year.

We are a military family. Need I say more?

Nope.
I was born into an Air Force career family, went on active duty for almost six years and then married a 30-year Army man.
I've moved 32 times in my life, NONE of which have been in the past 7 years. Everything from across town to across an ocean. It's still an equal amount of hassle to packup and clear a place, even allowing for the fact that the military moves you...sort of.
Have you ever known of anyone who wanted/allowed the movers to unpack any of their boxes on the other end? Last move of mine was 15K pounds-they'd still be here probably. :p
BTW, I read your thread about your day alone and wanted to commiserate a bit-I know what it's like to be alone on a special day. So, you do the right thing when you save the celebrations up for when hubby comes home.

We have done DIY moves every time. It is a bear to get the money they owe you but you know that everything is going to get there when you need it to and the trash hasn't been packed.
As far as today I took the time to do a few nice things for myself. Sitting in the bath for an hour with a good glass of wine and a great book was heaven!

We did a partial DIY from Ft. Lewis to Ft. Belvoir. Two teenagers, two cats, two rabbits, two vehicles, one dragging the UHaul trailer. Granted we couldn't do DIY's overseas the three times we went to Germany, still, one partial DIY was more than enough. Fortunately we never had a massive loss or damage claim to make. In fact the only time stuff got stolen was our second move, out of Stuttgart. We got East German packers in, and they stole, nothing valuable, but the Desert Storm pinup calendar I'd bought for my husband as one of his homecoming presents, all of his DCU's, and some other trivial stuff. Pissed me off royally because we actually had given them lots of furniture and other odds and ends we weren't taking back.
I love wine with a book and a bubble bath too! Sounds like a plan for Monday when everyone goes back to work. :cheersmate:

Actually it is about a 3 1/2 hour drive and that's with traveling speed limits and no traffic...Fat chance the closer you get to south Florida and Lauderdale is getting way down there(My dad lives due west of Pompano/Lauderdale). I've lived in Orlando...made the drive several times.
To add to it, 3 1/2 hours is optimal time...most likely they are going to bump traffic, especially once they hit Palm Beach or until they get out past Palm Beach. It can be a nightmare with such a closed in space and very few ways in and out. The traffic sucks down that way...unless they've built more roads in the 2 years since I"ve last visited
But, the whole point is I expect this is just for a ONE TIME interview and they would move should the girlfriend gets the job so I don't see what the big deal is. I'd actually question the move if I were them because South Florida seems a bit more unstable then central when it comes to jobs right now. I'd be looking further North of Orlando, not south, but who knows her qualifications and if she has some specialty that would bring more stability. I can't help but wonder now that they are contemplating moving anyway if they wish they had just moved to Dallas to begin with and stayed with the girlfriend's job. Somehow I get the feeling it was the DUmmy boyfriend who whined about moving to the rethug hub of Texas. :whatever:

Must be something about the area, Boud. When my parents moved with me from Germany to the states waaaay back when, they too had their thigns looted by German movers. WTH? :bird:

I think in my entire life there was ONE time that I only had to go that far for a new job, all the rest the distance was much greater.

Maybe she's got a chance to move from The Dollhouse on OBT to the one in Ft Lauderdale. :-)

Well, to be fair, the Germans aren't the only looters among movers. Some friends of ours, while stationed with us in Augsburg, had left most of their furniture in storage in the Ft. Bragg area. The warehouse workers apparently SOLD alot of families' appliances and furniture at flea markets. I remember how :argh:our friends were, but confess to forgetting many details. It's been over 15 years and I'm gettin' old. :p

So... why not move to Dallas when the job went there too?
My guess is, since the company got bought by another, that the job became redundant. And I am quite happy about them not coming here, because we have enough infiltrating from everywhere else. (Democrats, that is.)

My rule of thumb was 1½ hrs one way! Anything more than that and I rented a room. Anything more was like working two jobs and only gettin' paid for one! I hate drivin', can ya tell?

Outsourced to Dallas.....that was pretty funny right there, I LOL'd. We've seen this loser before, just recently. A complete freeloader; his fiancee carries all the weight. He used to publish something, then the market for the subject matter tanked, so he gave up. Sponges off of girlfriend. As a result, they are perpetually destitute. Who would say "yes" to a proposal from a creep like that?

Like you, no one calls. I get no invites out and I have no more single friends... It does indeed hurt.
I'm sorry, but someone who consciously chooses such a screenname is not likely to be the life of any party.
