My neighbor shot my other neighbors dog 3 times today, killed it - and it was perfectly legal
After the first shot, I ran outside to see what was going on, and neighbor #1 had a pistol and had shot neighbor #2's dog once in the back. I noticed the dog was bleeding and running around the yard while neighbor #1 was aiming his gun again. I asked him why he was shooting the dog since the dog was in it's own yard and nothing looked out of place and he said the guy (neighbor #2) had asked him to shoot the dog for him, but at that time, no one was home. So, I told neighbor #1 that I was calling the police. He shot the dog again right in front of me and blew half the dogs face off and the poor dog was still trying to hide behind some bushes looking at me....it was awful, its lips hanging off, face ripped out and scared shitless. neighbor #1 went back in his house and came back with a some sort of rifle and shot the dog again finally killing it.
When the police arrived, I explained the situation and thought there would be some sort of animal cruelty violation, but the police informed me that since neighbor #1 did have permission, what he did was perfectly legal. The dog was a sweet sweet playful submissive dog with no aggression that I ever saw whatsoever. I petted it over its fence all the time. damn I'm sick about it.

36. you think the whole story is invented?
starting to get that feeling myself,,,but i just re read the OP and there is nothing there abt being in a city or city limits
you think people in the country don't have neighbors?
IF the story is true, it has a very rural feel to me

Unless neighbor # 2 is mentally ill, why would he/she ask #1 to kill his dog?

23. Believe me or not...it happened.
The dogs owner said he was afraid the dog would hurt his mother who has cancer. It happened.
HUH!!!

37. that makes no sense
and if it doesn't make sense, it's probably not true.
Why would somebody think a dog would suddenly hurt his mother with cancer?
And why would somebody agree to shoot an innocent dog just because somebody asked him to?
And why wouldn't somebody just give the dog away or take him to a shelter if they did think it was going to be a problem with a sick person?
What the **** kind of sick state do you live in that doesn't have animal cruelty laws, because I assure you that would be illegal I think in every state I've ever lived in.

52. and yet you didn't stop it
You went inside to call the police. Instead of telling the neighbor to stop shooting the dog and simply stopping it.
I don't believe you. It makes zero sense, including your own action/inaction.

55. then your neighbor is indeed mentally ill
or just plain stupid. There are other ways to humanely put down an animal.
To ask someone, who is obviously a bad shot, to shot one's pet is just insane.
I still don't buy this.

41. This is plain and simply animal cruelty
Tell shithead #2 how his dog was murdered. Explain that shithead #1 had a little blood sport with the dog before he finally ended it.
I would get a lawyer and see if I could sue shithead #1 for metal damages to me, at the very least have a lawyer scare him. After that I would make shithead #1 life's hell till I found some where else to live.
I'm so glad we own almost a thousand acres that we live in the middle of so I don't have to put up with shitheads.
Sure you do.
Campfire is full of rage. I just brought over the posts from the doubters.

If you only learn one thing about DU, learn and remember this; DUmmy's lie. All the time they lie.
-
Discharging a gun within town limits or within so many feet of an occupied dwelling? Nope.
And in many states (mine included), you're not allowed to shoot an animal as a means of putting it down.
-
Shot him in the face and the dog was still alive?
Lie, lie, lie.

I've put down many a dog over the years. Never lived anywhere where it mattered. Every dog I put down for someone was killin' livestock of some sort. Chickens, piglets, even one that maimed a cow! The rule around here is, if your dog is chasin' any other animal besides rodents or cats, it has just signed it's death warrant! For the long shots I use either my .22 mag rifle, or the good 'ol .243!
Only a few were mine, and then it was because they were suffering and there was nothing I could do. I have been asked many times by neighbors to put down a dog, or a horse, because they are pets! No one wants to pull the trigger on their own pet!
Still, I never stood back and took pot shots! I would feed the dog, play with him/her for a while and then take them "huntin". It was always from point blank range right behind the left ear.
If I'd of seen this asshole shoot and make the dog suffer, we'd be plantin' him right alongside the dog! What an SOB!!!
That is, if there's any truth in this tale!
-

Lie, lie, lie.
Naw, I've seen worse when it comes to game animals! Depending on the caliber of the gun, it can glance right off the skull! Dogs and cats are no exception.
-
I've killed two raccoons and two feral cats on the property here. Each time was a classic heart/ lung shot. They didn't live 10 seconds after I killed them. I didn't like having to do that, but they were bothering the other animals and being a nuisance. Of course I used a 336 style .410 instead of a hand gun. I live in a rural neighborhood and have checked with the sheriff to make sure it's OK to shoot out here. There are other ways of getting rid of the animals, but shooting them is the most humane, efficient & effective method. I also make damned sure of where my bullet is going to go in case I DO miss.
-
Ditto to both of Al's posts.
We can shoot an animal to "put it down." Euthanasia solution isn't always an easy death either. A well-placed shot is more humane, IMO.
But, as to the story, I don't believe it, or at least not as told.

I had wolf /malamute hybrid a few years ago. They told me I could bring her in and they would give her a shot. Said it just makes them go to sleep, but can take over an hour, then you can't take your animal home. They have to incinerate them because of the chemicals.
**** that! She was my partner for damn near 12 years! I took her home and did it myself. I still go by and put wildflowers on her grave every spring!
She had bladder cancer and it had spread before we even knew it! She was a tough 'ol broad and never complained. Not even at the end, aside from whining when she tried to get up on the couch! That's the only way I knew somethin' was wrong!

Hmmm...moonbats walking 'round with messed britches is a normal state of existence for them. Must be warm and comfy for them...squishy...smelly...DUmmy...

Same here, Al.
I've had to put down 3 dogs of my own, 1 for killing livestock, 2 for cancer.
I've also put down 2 other dogs, don't know who's, for killing livestock. Nobody came by to ask about any dogs, and around here, people put dogs and cats out all the time. Most end up as road kill.

42 years ago, I was the only house in this area....people DUmped animals on me all the time. Some I kept and took care of, some were old/sick/crippled and I had to shoot them. A point blank .22 hollow point to the head was quick. Hell, I probably shed more tears and had more feelings for the dogs/cats I killed than the previous owners did.....yet they probably thought of themselves as animal lovers and oh so humane.

20. I am so sorry you had to witness that.
I am NOT a gun person by any stretch, but if I were to ever witness something like that, I would file my application, wait the background check, take lessons at some local gun clinic and waste that asshole. I know, 3 hots and a cot for the rest of my life. The ONLY thing holding me back at that point would be concern about who takes care of my own critters.
Beating the living shit out of this guy is too good for him.
I agree with the above. Call Animal Protection or the ASPCA. If the dog's companion did indeed approve/request this, he is just as guilty of animal cruelty as the maniac that pulled the trigger.
Liberalism at its finest.

I remember a few years ago when a newly transplanted city neighbor decided to let her lab run free. Right into my pasture where she proceeded to chase my old mare around. Well the younger April decided to come to Auntie Razz's (If anyone has ever wondered about my screen name there you go) defense and sent the dog into orbit via her heels. The city woman that now lived 'in the country' came storming to my door demanding payment for the vet bills for her poor doggie. I politely informed her that the next time her dog decided to chase my horses she would be picking up a carcass. Being of the liberal bent she proceed to whine about how it is not fair for my horses to run free but her dog couldn't, how she would never attack another animal and how evil gun owners were. Well the dog was shot a month later after she killed two sheep down the road. Thankfully the owner decided to move not that long after.

Good story April, ----Good farm dogs stay in the yard guarding the family and other critters and not becoming chicken killers.
I was raised around Yankee farmers that when the temperature got to 30 degrees brought the dogs in to sleep by the wood fire place. A big debate up here for years about hunting dogs, some claim that bringing the dogs into the house would destroy their nose, for the hunt and others said that made no difference.
Your neighbor April had to have been a city gal that had no idea the instincts of a dog is to chase anything that moves. Dogs know their own and may want to play with other beasts and are not out for the kill.
Dogs that are pets should never be allowed to leave the home property, once they are out of range of human supervision they will become killers and that may include a small child picking wildflowers.
We have unfortunately up here have Coydogs, these are the dogs that are dumped by the road at any age or dogs left to run free and gather in a pack.
They are more dangerous then wolves or coyotes, they have no fear of man. They run the pregnant deer to the ground, and have been known to attack kids getting off a school bus.
Letting a dog run loose, a big one at that makes for misery for neighbors and the pets owner.
Me I would have called the dogs owner and told them that if I ever saw her dog off her property even sitting by the side of the road licking his balls, I would blow the dog away, I have a shot gun and I know how to use it.

A dog seems to put out heat when they are sleeping. They may good foot warmers.
