Title: Christmas Traditions
Post by: Eupher on December 21, 2010, 11:40:05 AM
Okay, you know the deal.

We've talked around a lot of this kind of stuff over the past several weeks, but now it's time for a thread of its own.

What kind of distinctly Christmas traditions do you enjoy? It can be what you did as a kid and carried over to adult life, or (as in my case) a tradition that has developed within adulthood.

It can be food related, or gift-related (separate thread on whether to open gifts on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning), or whatever-related.

Sounds goofy, but Mrs E and I find an opportunity to visit a Walgreens and purchase at least one, usually more, of those stuffed dolls that perform Christmas music, while dancing a bit. The first one we bought some years ago was a Santa Claus playing a tenor saxophone and the Christmas tune "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town."

We put that with the Christmas stuff and the little bastard has been begetting similar dolls. The one we got for this year was a dog with flopping ears, singing an R&B tune. Hysterical!

It has become a tradition with us. We go out together and look around, and buy the one we like, plus more for gifts.

Nah, we save the rubber duckie for concerts - where it belongs.

After my hubby and I got married my MIL gave us an Ornament celebrating our 1st Christmas together married, then all of a sudden every year she got us an ornament of something that happened in the year, when we got a computer for the 1st time she gave us a computer ornament, when we got a pool she got us an ornament celebrating that, when we lost our 2 dogs she got us angel ornaments with the dogs names on them, we really enjoy getting the ornaments from her, we put them up and talk about them. This year might be tough though, we lost my FIL this year, we told her she didn't have to get an ornament for us this year if it would be too hard for her, she said she picked 1 up, so we know it's going to be a tearjerker. :(

Mine is kind of different, I established my own.  My birthday is the day before, so I spend Christmas Eve morning, in some quiet, having some special coffee, Kona or Blue Mountain, whichever is around, and an almond croissant purchased the day before from a local french bakery.  I open my gifts, that are under the tree.  Only the birthday ones.   Later in the day, I meet my closest girlfriends at a local pub, and enjoy a few beers, and lunch.  Dinner is always a secret meal, prepared by BF, something special.  Then, champagne, and opening each other's Christmas presents.  I have done the same thing for the last 8 years, and don't wish to change any of it.  Christmas is a hubbub of activity, visiting both of our families, so it works out best this way.

I also bake too much.  Every year I bake sugar cookies, cut them out and decorate with sugar, just like I did with my Mom.  I even use the same cutters.  She gets a kick out of those cookies every year.  I also make fudge, butter toffee, and sometimes ginger snaps, or another bar cookie of some sort.  I mail them to my Mom and Step-Mom, and pass them out to the brother, and BF's family.
