Change is coming, Gates said, but the current policy stays in place during an implementation process.
The law itself will not be effectively pulled down until the Pentagon has had a chance to adjust regulations that relate to same-sex partners, including next-of-kin notification, family access to commissaries and military fitness centers, health insurance and other benefits.
The Defense Department also plans to conduct training of all military personnel to emphasize current standing orders that every member is to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of gender, religion, color and other differences.
When all that is completed -- a process that Gates has said could take up to a year -- actual repeal won't happen until the president, the Secretary of Defense and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff all certify that it will not negatively affect combat readiness.
Even then – still not done. According to the repeal legislation, a 60-day waiting period will follow the formal certification. At the end of those two months, gays and lesbians will be able to serve openly in the armed services without discrimination.
Until then, "don't ask, don't tell" will remain in effect -- it's still the law,'' Pentagon spokesman Col. David Lapan told reporters Friday.

It may be the policy, but I'll bet there'll be no discharges. Except for those by the gheys that are celebrating. :-)

More waste of time and money. I guess they'll bring in those civie Diversity Coaches and make us sit through 10 hours of diversity training. Meanwhile, as a Logistics and Combat Support Specialist I've got 30,000 tons of materiel waiting to be loaded that can't be until I'm there to help direct it. Everything from MRE's to Hummers. Plus I'm racing against time with the tides because these behemoths can only sail at certain times because of those tides. A fully laden ship cannot sail at low tide without endangering itself and it's cargo.
My job as a SSgt Logistics and Combat Support Specialist is to get materiel to my brothers as soon and as quickly as possible. I can't do that if I have to sit in some classroom listening to some pinhead lecturing about how gays in the military are to be treated now.

Constitutionally speaking I'd rather have it done through congress than the courts.
At least this way it may be overturned if the military suffers and since it was done legislatively those crying "bigotry!" won't have much of a political leg to stand on as we may retort, "We tried it your way."
If the courts decided we would be locked in with little hope of changing, i.e. Roe v Wade.

Hi,
In my opinion we are seeing the tip of the ice berg. What happens if we get an all fag military? What happens when some guy gets passed over for promotion and sues based on discrimination? What happens in the shower when several guys notice one of their peers really enjoying looking at them?
No matter how congress tries, you cannot legislate morality, nor can you legislate peoples basic beliefs. While the young people today are indoctrinated since the day they begin to socialize in kindergarden, it still will not change a whole lot.
A friend of mine who is retired military +++ says that the guy who won the medal of honor recently was well vetted politically. Lots of applications for medal of honor candidates were rejected for some very political reasons and bs excuses.
You can be sure if some gay guy does something he will be fast tracked.
regards,

They'll be looking for "sucksess stories" of gays in the military.

I see a lot of guys and gals going to their chain-of-command with sexual harrassment complaints in the near future...
Just sayin.

Exactly. Gates is just playing out a stupid charade to make it looks like he actually gives a **** what the combatant part of the military thinks, which he doesn't. What kind of moral ground would a commander be on to discharge or prosecute someone under rules that are already wiped out, even though he technically can?

On Saturday while at FLW, I happened to peruse a DoD doc written for the "masses." States pretty emphatically that when DADT goes by the wayside, all service men and women will be treated with dignity and respect blah, blah, blah.
Why was it necessary to publish that document and require commanders to "train" their people on it if the regs on which they live and die haven't even been ****ing written yet? :whatever:
