Hampden condo bans US flag
Bangor Daily News
by Renee Ordway

Hammocks? Yep. Wreaths? Sure. Pick your size and shape. Christmas trees? You bet. Lawn chairs? That’s fine. Welcome signs? Why not? Flower pots? Of course. Those are many of the things that one may find on any front porch. Perhaps an American flag?

Not so fast.

“You’ve got to be kidding me!” That was Darla Coombs’ response when she was told that the Highland Ridge Condominium Association wanted her American flag removed from its mount on the front of her condo. >>>

Yet another reason why I have zero desire to live anyplace associated with an "homeowners association". Condo assoc. are a mild form of sharia law. Wanna bet most of the dolts in this condo association voted for Obama?

Olive drab clothing with a red star, anyone?

HOA's are the devil.  I could never live in one.  My husband does all the work on our cars.  The clipboard Nazi's would be all over our shit if we lived in one.  The second someone denied my right to hang the American flag in America, I'd go out to Sam's Club and buy a whole case of them... and then cover my home in the American flag.

These HOA Nazis don't seem to learn that it never ends well for them. The public outcry always ends in the HOA folding like a cheap suit. As it should of course.

The bigger problem with HOAs is that they are usually run by some company that isn't actually involved with ownership within the HOA. They also have very deep pockets because they just increase the HOA fees if there is any litigation. I've lived in two HOA communities. One was fairly decent except for the one anal woman on the architectural control board. I ultimately became president of that association. The second one was run with no diplomacy or consideration for the homeowner. I MIGHT live in another HOA community, but I'd have to see their by-laws, covenants & restrictions before I'd even consider it.

Did your fee go up every year?

I stay away from HOA's because the fee will probably always go up and it would make me feel like I was still renting.  My parent's live in an HOA free neighborhood and all the houses look fine.  The neighbor's actually take pride in their homes without an HOA telling them to do so.  There might be a day or two where a neighbor doesn't mow their lawn right away, so their grass is a tad bit higher then their neighbor's, but it's not the end of the world.

Not at the first one. It actually went down after I assumed office. That was probably a mistake on my part because it left them with no money to retain a lawyer. We had a sub-HOA within the HOA and they pulled some shit that should have been fought in court. (They were townhomes within the main HOA, which was comprised of Single family homes & the townhomes. They never obtained permission from the main HOA to make their townhome community a 55+ community. Even then, the annual fee was only $40.

Stories like these make my blood boil. :argh:
This is America. We hang/show the American flag as a sign of pride for our freedoms, our troops and our Country.

I've become accustomed to having the freedom that goes with living outside of city limits and no HOA. While I'm not a big fan of huge yards (I hate mowing), I think I'd rather have the freedom than some asshole with a clipboard tell me what I can and can't do with my property.

If I want a chain link fence, that's what I'll put in. If I want purple trash cans, that's what I'll put out on my curb. If I want a purple garbage can for a mailbox (approved by USPS, of course  :-) ), that's what I'll put up.

I'll just have to hire somebody to mow the freakin' yard.

Here's my idea of a nice "retirement" community:

160 acres in the middle of friggin nowhere, my own well/septic, my own private driveway/path to the road, and enough trees/shit between me and the neighbors that I can sit in front of my house nekkid in a beanbag chair eating Cheetos without having anyone annoy me.

I'm almost there now.  4 years and I've had the Jehovahs Witnesses drop by ONCE in that time.  Pretty good record if you ask me.
