Drudge Report owner sued by Righthaven

Las Vegas copyright enforcement company Righthaven LLC on Wednesday filed its second copyright infringement lawsuit over Denver Post material, this time suing a big target: Drudge Report operator Matt Drudge.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court for Nevada, charges a Nov. 18 Denver Post "illustration" called "Transportation Security Administration agents perform enhanced pat-downs" was posted without authorization the same day on the Drudge Report website as well as the drudgereportarchives.com site.

A court exhibit, however, indicates the illustration is actually a Denver Post photograph of a TSA officer patting down a passenger at Denver International Airport. Righthaven usually sues over unauthorized online postings of news stories, columns and editorials. Lately it has sued over alleged infringements involving graphics and, now, a photograph.

Is this a backdoor attempt by liberal MSM to stop, shut down, 'people' from questioning what they print, photo, video/etc.?

It is possible.

It is possible.

This is very confusing.

How can reporting the news and having it picked up by the AP or anyone be considered copy write infringement when credit is given to the original source.?

This sound like a good way to muffle the press, shuts down the name of the source and places small news papers in a bind.   The little guys cannot afford to send reporters to confirm or deny the source.

Say a report of a crime is published in a Newspaper, the public outside that area will either never know about it or inside the area rebutt the report.  Any errors in reporting will just go in small print in the corrections area if that.

We know the newspapers in this country are in big trouble, a local paper in my area now charges it's on line customers to read their site. I can understand the need for money, why give away the news for free.

I fear a spill over onto news stations on TV and Radio.  This can become a mess when we in forums fear sending a link to a story and get sued for not paying them the source for using it.

This opens the door for the shysters and crooks that may put out a call for help for ,.say very sick child.  They cannot send a link to anyones news story to verify the facts.

Open the door to rumor and gossip, we have no way to check and verify the story.

This is not about Authors of books and Papers this is the news, it should be public knowledge. As long as credit is given to the source that will bring in revenue to the source on its own.

God, I hope not.
But, it does sound suspicious.

It is possible.

More along the lines of "probable," IMO.

Posting material from a site is one thing. Post too much and there is no reason to click through but Drudge is an aggregation site. He doesn't post original content, just links to others. If you want to see what the story is about you have to click through.

Now Drudge and every other aggregate site has every disincentive to avoid RH like a leprous whore.

If I was advertising with RightHaven I'd pull my contract immediately. Not only do they have a nasty reputation but they are deliberately doing everything in their power to NOT have people link through to them. This has got to be the dumbest business model to come down the pike in the history of Ever.

I have a sneaking suspicion that when RightHaven picked on Drudge, they bit off more than they can chew.......

If the past is any indication Matt Drudge is nothing to be trifled with......he's no virgin when it comes to content lawsuits.

I agree. Im sure that Mark Levin (http://www.marklevinshow.com/home.asp) (with his Landmark Legal Foundation) (http://www.landmarklegal.org/DesktopDefault.aspx) would be more than happy to stand behind Drudge should this come full circle.

Levin is nobody to be trifled with either .. as Im sure the left has learned by now.

I hope Matt Drudge stomps a mudhole in their ass.
