Oh my.
You know, I'm starting to think hibbyhubby Wild Bill ate hippywife Mrs. Alfred Packer.
It's been a while now, and the cooking and baking forum is pretty dead without her.

Anyone do anything spectacular with broccoli
I have a beautiful bunch from the CSA. I'm tired of the usual stir fries and soup. To make it difficult...I eat Vegan and it needs to be cooked soft...(I know yuck!)
Broccoli's good eaten raw, like popsicles.

2. You can oven roast it or make a cheese sauce.

3. Coconut curry cheese sauce...
I'm doing this for cauliflower tonight, and it should work with broccoli.
Make a roux. I used half a stick of butter and 4 TBSP flour. (I have a lot of people to feed.)
Toss a can of evaporated milk in the roux. Let it thicken, but if much too thick, toss in some milk.
Toss in a cup or so of grated cheese (I used sharp cheddar because that's what I have a lot of, but there are better choices.)
Toss in a can of coconut milk.
Add milk as necessary to get right thickness.
Spice with curry powder, parsley, dry mustard, red pepper flakes, salt, black pepper, cayenne, anxd anything else that sounds good. All to taste.
When serving, sprinkle paprika over it for show.
No cheese? Use canned or fresh pumpkin glop instead-- pumpkin sauce can be fantastic.
Hmmm.
The primitive full of beans, above, obviously isn't fixing this for the homeless.

4. Not healthy, but ...
... I've actually batter dipped, deep fried, and served broccoli and other vegetables with a sesame barbecue sauce of the kind used in Chinese restaurants to make "Sesame Chicken" -- when I did this, I actually used mixed vegetables -- broccoli and cauliflower florets, red and yellow pepper strips, and strips of summer squash cut about the same size as the pepper strips, and also pineapple chunks are really nice in this mix. Use a very light, tempura type batter, and a neutral flavored oil for frying.
The vegetables actually cook to a moderately cooked consistency this way, but if you need it softer, I don't see any reason you couldn't pre-cook the broccoli by steaming it -- just make sure it's "dry" by patting it off in some paper towels -- you wouldn't want a lot of water in their to make the frying oil splash and burn.
I would serve this with the sauce, rice, and put some sesame seeds on it. Or, you could also just serve with the sauce on the side as an appetizer.
I know it might sound a little weird, but it's actually really good.

I hope she's OK frank.

Can vegans eat butter?

Can vegans eat butter?
I don't think so... they probably buy margarine anyway.
I just threw some steaks onto the stovetop with a little bacon fat in the pan. Yeah, it's dinner time. :yum:

They're not supposed too eat eggs and dairy.

This isn't necessarily relevant scuttlebut, but anyway.
The hippywife Mrs. Alfred Packer was told a few months ago by the hippyhubby Wild Bill that she shouldn't be paying so much attention to Skins's island, and so she tapered off on her posting.
After some time of posting only occasionally, Mrs. Alfred Packer resumed posting energetically and actively.
And then (late October, early November) she went up to Ohio to visit her family.
She came back about a couple of weeks ago, and posted that she was back, making some sort of subtle not-kind insinuation about Wild Bill.
Mrs. Alfred Packer soon thereafter abruptly evaporated.
I'm sure there's a story behind this.
In the meantime, the primitive who doesn't like us, the imperious primitive, the "TheEmpress ofAll" primitive, and Mrs. Alfred Packer's good friend the "Lucinda" primitive, have been bravely carrying the load, the job of keeping the cooking and baking forum more active than the "job-seeking" forum on Skins's island.
But it's too big of a job, even for both of them together. No one was more industrious than the possibly-late Mrs. Alfred Packer.

Yeah, that was a speed bump for me.
What the Hell is a "CSA", as it pertains to food?

Community Supported Agriculture.
Basically, you pay a set amount for the season and get a share of the produce direct from the farm each week.

Thanks for the update. Hope she's okay - she talked about some new medication she's on (for diabetes I think).
I suppose I should drop in for a visit to C&B to help out, eh? :rotf: :-)

Well, as I said, I'm sure there's a story behind Mrs. Alfred Packer's mysterious disappearance.
I suspect she upset Wild Bill, pissed him off, when she questioned his judgement.
But it's too late to include in "Mrs. Alfred Packer does Christmas."
Yeah, unfortunately the cooking and baking forum needs some help. It used to be one of the most lively, most animated, most busy, forums on Skins's island, but now there's cobwebs starting to gather in it.

I hate broccoli.

I hate broccoli.
I love Broccoli. Preferably raw, dipped in hummus, but I'll eat it lightly steamed, roasted, or stir fried. As long as it doesn't get mushy.
I don't ever remember not liking broccoli either.

Death/hell to you, Broccoli Lover!
My parents liked that yucky stuff and so did my brother and sister. None of them could ever understand why I hated it. :-)
I love spinach though. Yum!!!

I have never seen any Verge that I do not like and that includes Stinky Fruit from Indonesia.
The reason is my family had a odd sense of humor. This I used on my own kids and they will also eat darn near anything that grows from the earth or out of the sea.
This consists of a very simple ploy with kids. The foods you suspect a 4-5 year old will not eat is never served to them. The stuff is placed in a closed dish and made off limits for kids, this is adult food. As the years go by the kids will get so curious about this adult food they will try to sneak a bite when they think you are not watching.
They may not like Brussels sprouts or Lima beans for example but when it is off limits to them they will learn to enjoy forbidden fruit.
The old tradition of having a separate children's table from the adults works well also. Just serve the food that the kids will eat as the adults eat foreign and strange foods the kids cannot wait to try. When the do get a bite of say winter squash and spit it out, it may not take but a while that they try it again and again until the begin to like the taste. Boys and girls associate food with being a big boy or big girl now and can now sit at the adult table and leave the kids table to the younger kids in the family.

Thanks for the update; I guess "Mrs. Alfred Packer does Christmas" will be held off for release until much later, like after the mourning period.

George H. W. Bush had broccoli banned from the White House. :-)
"I do not like broccoli and I haven’t liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I’m President of the United States and I’m not going to eat any more broccoli. Now look, this is the last statement I’m going to have on broccoli. There are truckloads of broccoli at this very minute descending on Washington. My family is divided. For the broccoli vote out there: Barbara loves broccoli. She has tried to make me eat it. She eats it all the time herself. So she can go out and meet the caravan of broccoli that’s coming in." :lmao:

I love steamed broccoli. Asparagus and spinach are awesome as well.
A little butter over a hot pile of broccoli is awesome.

Melted nacho cheese or bearnaise sauce :yum:

Me too - I love most all vegies. The only ones I hate are lima beans and rutabagas.

Good idea. She really seems like a nice gal.
-
I do broccoli the same way I do asparagus: steamed, with lemon juice and a few shakes of parmesan cheese.
-
She really seems like a nice gal.
Actually, no.
Mrs. Alfred Packer is a spiteful, venal, mean, intolerant bigot.
When I first saw Mrs. Alfred Packer some years ago, I was enthralled with her, infatuated with her, and in fact oftentimes posted here about what a remarkable person she was, what a good person she was.
But as time went on, I realized I had fallen for a fantasy, not the real thing.
It was that warpy thing all over again; I used to respect and admire the defrocked warped primitive--the evidence is right here, in the archives--but over time I had to do an about-face.
It's that Pollyanna aspect of franksolich's character; he always first looks upon people new to him in the best possible light, childishly believing that all people are good in heart.
And he hangs on to that perception for the longest time, with a near-superhuman tenacity.
In both real life and on the internet, when franksolich decides someone isn't as good as he had advertised them to be, it creates considerable discombobulation within myself, and shocked surprise in those around me--"Ah, he finally gets it."
Mrs. Alfred Packer is not a "nice gal."
I'm itching to release "Mrs. Alfred Packer does Christmas," but my own decency compels me to wait, until a decent interval for mourning is over. One must, above all, remain a gentleman.
I dunno what a decent interval for mourning is; I'm assuming it's over when Mrs. Alfred Packer resumes her bashing of the decent and civilized people of Oklahoma, or of those people derived of the Celestial Kingdom.
