Dec 2 (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday voted to extend Bush-era tax cuts on individual income up to $200,000 a year and $250,000 for families, letting extra cuts for the wealthiest to expire.
Republicans have vowed to block the measure in the Senate. They want to extend additional low tax rates for the wealthiest Americans as well.
House Passes Middle-Class Tax Cut, Boehner Slams Democrats

House Democrats on Thursday passed a bill making middle-class tax cuts permanent as Republicans accused them of playing political games at a sensitive time.
The bill passed 234-188 but stands no chance in the Senate. But House Democrats, who want to let the cuts expire for the wealthy, wanted to publicly stake out their position before compromising on extending the tax cuts for everyone.

It's a trap. Senate Republicans have enough votes to filibuster the proposal, making it highly unlikely it will pass through the upper chamber and onto President Obama's desk. Then the Homocrats will go on TV and say, "See middle class America. Republicans don't really want to cut your taxes" and the naive people in the population will gobble up their spin.

Why do they pick $200K for individuals and only $250K for married people? Why do they penalize married couples this way?
