University students across Texas this week joined San Antonio students in a hunger strike aimed at pressuring U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison to vote for the DREAM Act, a bill that would provide a path to citizenship for students and soldiers brought to the country illegally as children.

Started two weeks ago by a dozen students at the University of Texas at San Antonio, the hunger strike spread this week to UT campuses in Austin, Dallas, Arlington, Brownsville and Edinburg, as well as the University of North Texas in Denton, according to members of DREAM Act NOW!, the UTSA student group that organized the strike.

The group is part of a national coalition called United We DREAM, which brings together activists in each state. Universities in Florida and Indiana have also begun striking in solidarity, members said.
I never thought I would see this day. Words like "solidarity" commie words.

“Now that they have seen we are still going and not planning to stop, some have joined us,” said Claudia Sanchez, one of the UTSA strikers. Sanchez, 29, is a U.S. citizen, but many of her fellow strikers are in the country illegally.

I want to know one thing. How in the hell is anyone here illegally serving in our military?
You would think the Pentagon would be like Jan Brewer, and ask people for their green cards papers.

You would think that would be the case. It should be.

It was when I went through. No citizenship or green card, no play. Unless something has changed since '02. And I'm sure they do at least a cursory background check. At least I'd hope they did after I spent 3 days filling out that SF 86.  :argh:

Speaking of hunger strikes, I saw a bunch of signs around campus yesterday talking about "HUNGER!" Not sure if they were related to these idiots since they were written on cardboard boxes in what looked like colored pencil. The ISO was also out there too. Is it me, or can you actually smell those people before you see them?

I know in the 90's you had to either be a citizen or have that green card. Maybe DADT expanded to immigration status as well now.  :-)

It's a fake issue, I think, to tart up the amnesty proposal so it looks like it's accomplishing something positive.  The only way an illegal is getting in is through identity theft, which would get them thrown out on fraudulent enlistment for the identity theft, NOT for being an illegal, when it was discovered.

eta - I guess on second thought it is possible there might be a very small number of people raised from tots in the US who were brought in illegally, and either their parents faked identities for them or they live in a state that has some way to explain why they didn't get a normal birth cert, like 'correcting' an 'unregistered home birth.'  In that kind of case it wouldn't be a fraudulent enlistment, but I can't imagine this is a high-frequency situation.

That's what I figured. There's just no way for an illegal alien to get into the military without it being dodgy. They're lying to drum up sympathy. Democrat SOP.

Rather than the government waste any time hand wringing over college for illegal aliens, I would much rather see them look into how any illegal alien is allowed to serve in the US Military, stop that practice immediately and prosecute anyone currently serving who enlisted under fraudulent terms.
