For me, the stupidest of all holidays is New Year's Eve/Day:
"Hurray! Hurray! The earth has completed another ellipse around the sun according to an arbitrarily selected and fixed point on said ellipse! Hurray! Yay!"
-
I think the day after Thanksgiving is a stupid day.
The deal is, in Nebraska, only state and local governmental employees get it off as a paid holiday; no one else.
The federal government is up and working the day after Thanksgiving, private businesses and establishments are up and working the day after Thanksgiving.
Only Nebraska state and governmental employees get the day off as a paid holiday.
This holiday used to mean something--the day of the then-annual Nebraska-Oklahoma football game, engraved in granite on the calendar--in which case everybody in Nebraska got the day off.
But the annual Nebraska-Oklahoma football game has been history since 1994 or something, and so there's no longer any point.

My previous employer observed Columbus Day. No, it wasn't a bank. Stupid, yeah, but I liked having it off anyway. :-)
-
Martin Luther King Day.

Martin Luther King Day.
...except when it falls on Robert E. Lee's birthday :-).

Labor Day

When I was working for SCE, one of the optional "floater" holidays was Cesar Chavez's birthday. Couldn't make it up if I tried.
-
I almost got bent out of shape when I saw an announcement for the "autumn harvest festival" at work until I realized it was for the Chinese employees.

Homer: Why do you look like Cesar Romero?
Cesar Chavez's ghost: Because you don't know what Cesar Chavez looks like.
-
How could there possibly be a stupid reason to miss a day of work? :???: :-)
-
Granted, SCE was smart enough to include Good Friday as one of the "floaters" as well.
Oh, and coach, both companies I've worked for (SCE and FPL) have day after Thanksgiving as a holiday. We don't get MLK day, however. That's the one thing that always kind of bugged me...a whole stretch of nearly 5 months with only one holiday (President's Day) as a paid holiday.
New Year's, President's Day, and Memorial Day in the first half of the year--3 days.
4th of July, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving and Black Friday, and Christmas--7 days, plus we get out after a half day on X-Mas Eve.
Hardly seems fair, no?

Whats a day off?

You must be self employed?

Take President's Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, and Veteran's Day out, and you have my holiday schedule. Nothing, from NYE to Memorial Day. It's a LOOOOONG Spring.

Only partially, I build fishing rods when I'm not working. When I am working I work on a revolving schedule and if my time on falls on a holiday , oh well. I worked many a Christmas.

Ditto.

I'm a federal employee, so everyday is a vacation.
-
I actually like having the day after Thanksgiving off, but I have 3 kids who are off too so more time to spend with them:-) As long as its paid, I ain't complaining. :-)
I will say though fitting 5 days worth of work into two is going to be a total bitch though! I will PAY for those days off that's for sure.

I hear ya--same for NYS.

It's been so good the last few 12 hour six day weeks, looks like we'll do it again this week........I mean vacations
-
So, when do we start taking the month of August off like that other example of wonderful socialism?
-
At least one group of government workers works no matter what holiday it is and they deserve all the thanks we can give them. Not saying that we here don't but you can bet your last dollar the left could give a rip about the Military and how many days they work.
-
Labor Day
That'd be my pick, too. Not that I intend to come in and work over it, of course!
:-)

I know that phenomenon. It's phenomenoning to me even as I write.

We don't officially get the day after Thanksgiving off; but everyone wants to take it as a vacation day. So, we're open but half the people are doing all of the work, including me. (bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch).
Ditto on the NYD through to Memorial Day. That's a long haul.
