how awful. the team had just touched down after a big road win against a nationally ranked opponent. this establishment is apparently trouble. but the rumors flying around right now are that the players weren't doing anything wrong; someone danced with the wrong girl. I have heard that the shooter is a gang member. but I have heard a lot of stuff this morning.
Three Southern Miss Football Players in Critical Condition After Shooting
Three Southern Mississippi football players were shot at a bar in Hattiesburg, Miss., early Sunday morning, according to a television report.
According to WDAM-TV of Hattiesburg, an altercation took place at Remington's Hunt Club around 1:20am Sunday. The fight then moved outside the Hunt Club, where one person opened fire, injuring three.
Southern Miss has declined comment, but sources told WDAM that all three shooting victims were Southern Miss football players. Sources told the TV station that all three are in critical condition.
According to the report, Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora has been spotted at Forrest General Hospital, as have several members of the Southern Miss football team.

Just awful. This should be the best time of their lives, not this.

the rumors that have been swirling in alumni and athletic sites all day have apparently been confirmed; one of the three players is parlyzed from the waist down.
I hope they find the POS that did this. the US marshals are involved; I don't know what, if anything, that may mean.
(not that it matters much, but the story is slightly wrong. green and smith are linebackers. jones is a DL)
Police: Three Southern Mississippi football players gunned down while celebrating win at nightclub
The Southern Mississippi football team is reeling after three of its players were shot outside a popular nightclub early Sunday morning, USM officials said in a hastily called press conference Sunday.
Tim Green, Martez Smith and Deddrick Jones, all members of the team's defensive line, are in "fair and stable condition" at an area hospital, officials said. Police said none of the athletes were armed at the time of the shooting.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with these young men and their families, friends and teammates," Joe Paul, vice president of student affairs at USM, said at the press conference. "Coach (Larry) Fedora has been with these young men and their families since the wee hours of this morning. He will make a statement for the media tomorrow."
Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour called university president Martha Saunders this afternoon to express his concerns for the players and their families, the university said.
The three men were shot around 1:20 a.m. at Remington's Hunt Club in Hattiesburg, MS according to police.

Still no arrest of a suspect?

Still no arrest of a suspect?
nothing. no word. silence, in fact. the authorities are being tight-lipped about the investigation. in a packed bar, you would think that there were plenty of witnesses.

That's what I was thinking. Unless, they are getting contradicting stories and are still trying to wade through the BS.

today the rumor mill is saying that the authorities know a lot more than they are letting on, and the the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the US Marshals are involved for a reason.
the hospital is saying that Martez Smith will probably never walk again.

If the players are black, the joint they were in is black, then that's normal....blacks have bad eyesight when it comes to things like that.
It happens here about every other week...nobody saw a thing.
-
Oh my God how awful!
-
Prayers for those young men

If the US Marshals are involved, one would think that the perp probably is a recent prison inmate, would they not?

The name (Remington Hunt Club) might indicate one with half a brain that this is a bad ass place. I used to chuckle when I passed a black bar named Derringer on the way to work. Shootings and fighting were the norm.

We have 2 of those on the southern edge of town...they change names about every other week....right after the last killing.
There can be a 100 people in the parking lot, 6 shooters and 20 wounded and nobody saw or knows anything about the shooting.
One of those places used to be a white juke-joint named the C&H Club....everyone referred to it as the Cut & Hit Club. :-)

it's a chain. it wasn't around yet back when I was in school, but from what I understand, the name is misleading; they don't hand out ammunition at the door or anything. it's just your typical college bar. well, BIG college bar. they fit 1,500 - 2,000 people in it on saturday nights. that's a lot of people in one place.

Time to shut this joint down permanently. Police called out 129 times in 9 months and no arrests.

ECU is going to wear a small southern miss logo on their helmets during their game against rice Saturday in support of our three injured players. what a wonderful gesture. good folks at ECU. I always enjoy going to greenville when we play at their place.
I wish they would take back that TD they scored in the 4th quarter to beat us a few weeks ago instead. :whistling:

Martez Smith was at the game tonight, and received an incredible ovation.
Massive manhunt ends
Travis "Taurus" Brown, 29, smiled as he was led in handcuffs into Forrest County Jail on Friday night.
A massive manhunt for Brown ended when he was arrested without incident in Hattiesburg at a residence on Broad Street around 8:30 p.m. He is charged with three counts of aggravated assault in Sunday's shootings of three Southern Miss football players.
Brown was arrested by Hattiesburg Police Department, U.S. Marshals Service and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Jon Kalahar said two other suspects - a man and a woman - were arrested. The two suspects' identities were not released.
A 9 mm weapon was also confiscated, he said.
