The mystery of a missile launch last night off the Southern California coast deepened today as U.S. military officials said they were still checking to see if the missile was one of theirs.
The unmistakable contrail of a missile streaking into the California sunset was captured on video last night by a KCBS news helicopter flying over Los Angeles at around 5 p.m. Pacific time.
The missile firing drew more attention when local news stations were told by Navy and Air Force officials that they did not launch a missile last night.
Flying above Los Angeles, the crew aboard the helicopter estimated the missile was fired approximately 35 miles west out to sea, north of Catalina Island.

I say BULLSHITT!! SOMEBODY knew about this..... Denial isn't going to help anything in this instance. NORAD doesn't know, the Navy doesn't know, SPAWARS doesn't know?? :bs:

This bunch does nothing but lie. I do not believe they know nothing...

Military and aviation officials said Tuesday they don't know who may have launched a mysterious object spotted in the sky late Monday off the Southern California coast, but noted that whatever the projectile was, it did not pose a threat to national security.

No threat? How about if it was aimed at LA? Wait a minute, never mind. :-)
We don't know who launched it, or what it was, but it's harmless. :banghead:

According to Fox News, it appears Norad and the Pentagon didn't get his memo and denying knowledge of any military operation in that area.

KFI-AM here in Los Angeles just had Dale Dye on the air, who says that he's talked to his contacts at Point Mugu and none of them thought this was anything more than some model rocket enthusiast.

Then they should be able to track the persons responsible down since there are restrictions on how much, what type and who can buy fuels like that.

I never could get a contrail like that with vinegar and baking soda. When I progressed up to Estes Industries solid fuel motors it got a little more like it but jeeze Louise the mailman would be wearing a truss if he brought enough to make have made one like that. But then things have progressed in the last forty years so. Still I am highly skeptical and tend to the Thor explaination that everyone is getting their story straight.

A model rocket? I find that hard to swallow.

The conspiracy theories are great and very entertaining to be sure, but doesn't s7's post above clearly show that the military notified the NOTAM service for pilots? If you read that post (yes yes, all caps is very difficult for some people) you will see that this was well planned out and thought through (in terms of pilot safety). So, did Osama take control of NOTAM? Are the aliens really that thorough? How nice! Here, I took the liberty of pasting the pilot notification (NOTAM = Notice to Airmen)
"NOTAM for LA.

Model rocketry has become a huge hobby with some people. Some of the rockets built could rival a Sidewinder missile in size. Last week on the travel channel they had a hour long episode on a gathering of those kinds of rockets and how high they could go. I think one tried for 25,000 feet.

Possibly an "accidental" launch - and they're still sorting through the chain of command to find out who and how before stripping some stripes.

Actually for the real enthusiasts, some of them rival a USN Standard missile in size, and like guns or anything else, all those legal rules are only a factor if you actually follow them.
Hard to say what really happened.

Assuming this was done by hobbyists, which I don't believe, shouldn't the military have scrambled aircraft and or ships to the area to investigate? This did take place at sea, so it would take a good sized craft to serve as a launch platform.

I don't believe it. Most of the comparable pictures that are contrails are headed towards the horizon, this is climbing. This video on the KCBS page shows a bright light where the object is. I've never seen that from an airliner.

True , but that does not provide the required sacrificial goat.
-

absolutely. We have to keep track of every shell (including duds that come back down) we have on property and make our storage magazines available to BATF any time they demand.
I recall one time a few years back thru a comedy of errors, we accidentally launched a shell around 3:45PM during our system check. You wouldn't believe the people we had crawling up our asses from Disney execs to Anaheim Police and Fire asking what happened, how it happened, why it happened, will it happen again, etc. I can't imagine someone accidentally lets a missile fly (if that is in fact what happened) and the grown-ups in charge don't know what is up.

Well, yup. That's pretty much my point. Aint no way no one knows WTF. And, with that being said, everyone pretty much looks like jack-asses, until they come clean. JMHO.
-
Oh they (Pentagon) knows damn well what this was and it was NOT a jet. We live about a mile from McCarran and I've never seen a zig zag contrail with red exhaust fumes. Nor have I ever seen fire shooting from any of those jets. Also, if it WAS a jet, did LAX expand their runways out into the Pacific Ocean?
None of the excuses being thrown out are sticking to my wall.
It was a missile.
-
Has anyone actually seen a missle fired?
The notice to the pilots was issued after the sighting.
An accidental firing from a US Naval vessle.......AYFKM
-
From CBS:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/11/09/national/main7039021.shtml
"In addition, the FAA ran radar replays from Monday afternoon of a large area west of Los Angeles. Those replays did not reveal any fast-moving, unidentified targets. The FAA also did not receive reports of any unusual sightings from pilots who were flying in the area Monday afternoon.
"If any new information comes to light in the coming days, we will update the press and public."
So, if it were a "jet" couldn't they identify which one? I'm starting to think it's a hoax by the local news station, because this is the only video available? Not one cell phone camera capture out of millions who saw it too?
-
It is curious that in such highly-controlled airspace, which can document precisely the comings and goings of aircraft which transit it, that they can't either identify a specific aircraft to the track or find any anomalous track that isn't accountable to a known aircraft.

As my favorite General once said " NUTS".
NO one in any kind of authority from the owner of a garage to his employee's tell his workers he has no idea what is going on to the head of our Security will announce that an event happend and they have no idea why.
GIVE ME A BREAK, no one stays in any kind of power if they are uninformed or tell every one they are clueless.
No one in their right mind goes on TV and announces that they were informed that a underwater missile was seen to be launched 35 miles off the coast of America, but no one in our multi billion budget set up to protect us has any idea of what that thing was.
It has been said that thousands of folk witnessed the event, but not a one had a camera phone, or even a disposable Kmart camera.
Lots of questions here, our military and scientists have revealed new developments in the art of Holograph projections with the help of Hollywood special effects experts.
We have been spoon fed for the last year about UFOs even appointed a scientist to the position of Ambassador to those from off world.
There is so much weird shit going on and few in the public pay attention to as they are trying to feed and cloth, house their family's.
New reports that Afghanistan has 10 trillion dollars in minerals, interesting reason to keep our military there .
No one, but No one can keep up with what is going on in the world that may directly effect us.
We just have to plod on and attempt to survive against the million different interests in the world.
We really need to specialise in one or two problems, trying to figure out all the special interests will divert us from the real threats to us.------Divide and confuse, turns us every day people into no caring give a dam folks.
Screw the politicians, my family is hungry. This is what we will get.

Here's an interesting blog...by an aeronautical engineer....
http://noconsensus.wordpress.com/2010/11/09/hide-the-incline/
....after a pretty convincing detailed explanation of still photos of the "launch", he concludes.....
It was a major missile too because of the size of the contrail and the slowness of the far off bright light, which will make the future handling of this interesting. Can we assume it is coincidence that a presidential Asia trip is in progress? The US wouldn’t dare mess with that without a purpose I don’t think. In fact I can’t recall ever seeing that sort of ‘show’ from the US – not that it would be impossible. Does that sound like Obama’s style?
How do I emphasize this enough, NORAD can track a baseball in orbit. They would not miss a major launch and for the pentagon to pretend that they might not know if it were a plane or a rocket, is a LIE. You are being lied to by the US government. We don’t know the reason for the LIE but it is still a LIE because the radar is too sensitive to not know. Of course the public will believe much of what is said if it is said in a reasonable manner but when you are clearly being LIED to, you should pay attention.
The video is incomplete, the contrail comes to an abrupt halt and without full video how can we interpret it? From my opinion, it looks like a first stage launch of a solid rocket booster from a sub (because there is no land). The only question I have is how they shut down the rocket so instantaneously. Where is the falling junk or the next stage? That means to me that it was likely of US origin.
Still there are two possibilities.
1 – the US is launching hardware outside of treaty and prohibited law.
2 – Someone who doesn’t like the US, just showed us that we are very vulnerable.
In either case the US government has some excuse to lie.
-
Uh....I hate to state the obvious, but the government has been in the business of lying to the people for as long as it's been around. :whistling:

I am surprised at the quality of that photo, on a cell phone camera it would be almost impossible to make out...in fact the same could be said for most pocket cameras
-
Just a thought. Suppose the military does know what this was but they can't say simply because it could put Obama in danger since he is out of the country?

I found a reference to the current "Notice to Mariners" report, supposedly on Page 55 of same, that missile firings were to be undertaken in this area, within the time period specified. I found the link by going to the Daily Update of urbansurvival.com. It's right at the top today.

Oh well, he just updated his blog with this
UPDATE: I’m totally wrong!
I understood some of the images as being after the event. Look though at the diffusion of the contrail in the shot below where the plane is still glowing at the top.The contrail behind had a long time to diffuse so this is not a missile.
-
Just a thought. Suppose the military does know what this was but they can't say simply because it could put Obama in danger since he is out of the country?
That's why I am just going to sit back and wait, see if this story disappears as fast as "the whole Polish Govt dieing in a plane crash story" did, conclude with the knowns....the Military and other Govt agents know what it is. If it is definitely not a jet contrail (what...taking off from 35 miles out in the ocean?), then it is a missle launch, it could have been an accident if it was a very complete missle launch drill, then you have to ask us or someone else. If it was an intentional launch , to what purposes by the US? Wouldn't a show of strike capability been better demonstrated elsewhere than 35 miles off the coast of Calif? Political theater of some kind? or Could it have been launched by someone else? The Chinese come to mind...they aren't particularly pleased with us right now....but several countries have the capablity to launch (really close to the US?)

A decent video of a Minuteman III ICBM launch from Vandenberg downrange to Kwajalein Atoll. Check out the contrail, make up your own mind.
I lived on Kwajalein island 1987-1992 and worked many of these missions along with several Peacekeeper (MX) ICBM missions.
Check out Kwajalein island, now named the Reagan Test Site - what a ride!

Well......the video clip that I saw on Fox News this morning appeared to definitely be a rocket/missile of some type.....climbing in a parabolic arc, and near the end of the shot, you could clearly see the light from the engine thrust plume.
The caveat that I'll throw in is that since the horizon was not in the shot, I have no idea of what the camera angle was, in reference to the horizon, or the path of the object.
The talking heads on Fox did a side-by-side comparison with aircraft contrails, and it simply doesn't compare......first, contrails are created by an aircraft (at level flight), that is high enough that its passage compresses the air to the point of saturation, where it immediately flash-freezes forming tiny ice crystals, which linger in its path until dissipated by the winds aloft.
The trail left by the object in question appeared (at least to me) like the billowing smoke generated by a combustion process, and since it further appeared that the altitude was initially low, and climbing.......therefore far below the atmospheric freezing level, the contrail theory doesn't seem to fit.
There simply isn't enough information to be certain, but if LAX didn't paint it on departure radar, and this is the only evidence, it would be a safe assumption that it was likely a small shoulder-fired missile, or an amateur built rocket.......however, I'd be at a loss to explain why a bunch of amateur hobbyists are launching 35 miles out to sea.
Putting my conspiracy theory hat on for a moment, I wonder what runway was in use at LAX during this time-frame, as someone might have tried to take a shot at either an arriving or departing flight. However 35 miles out would have required a significantly sophisticated weapon, becausr airliners at that distance from the runway are generally at 15,000 feet or so on approach or departure.

Having seen the video and having lived here a stones throw away from the Space Center {they've launched sea based missles here too} for almost 30 years I'd have to say it's a missle. It's to big for a model rocket and moving way to fast to be a jet. If you look at the sun reflection in the smoke it all stays on the underside of the arc which means it's moving out to sea east to west. There would be 1, maybe 2 marked, literally night and day color changes if it was coming west to east.
What you're seeing is a solid propellant rocket motor IMHO close to but smaller in size than a Shuttle SRB. Also you wouldn't see the flashing at the end of the video if it was moving east because the flashing is from looking into the engine as it sputters out. It's to bad the video ends there because I'd like to see if there was another rocket kicking on in the next 10-20 seconds after the video ended.

The sky in Las Vegas is typically a blue/purple/pink at sunset. Even then, the contrail is still a black/gray color off of our jets.
I've lived near airports my entire life and have NEVER seen anything like that. It's not a plane. Sorry.
And then the trails left high in the sky are always white.

Not at sunset, and not at a low angle trajectory, especially with all the crap floating around the sky in LA.
Unless and until someone coughs up and admits it's a missile, I'll stick with the AW808.
If it ain't, screw it--sue me. I've seen launches from Vandenberg from OC and this doesn't look like that.

It's okay. At this point, none of us know... and I don't think us regular citizen's will EVER know what that really was. If it was a plane, why won't the Pentagon come out and say so?
I've just never seen that much exhaust/smoke coming from a regular jet. If I saw that over the skies of Las Vegas, I'd be preparing for a plane crash.
Was AW808 landing in California or Arizona? I only ask because it looked like the "missile/plane" was shooting upwards. If it was a plane landing in LA, wouldn't it had to have been descending?
This whole thing confuses me. I'd really like to know, because if it WAS a missile, I do not feel safe or feel that our government is competent to protect us.
-
If it didn't paint a radar picture...is there any chance that we have applied stealth technology to our missiles?
And that the reason the DoD and Feds are being so tight lipped about it is because the KCBS helicopter crew that filmed it just got extremely lucky in capturing it on tape?
I imagine someone's explanaiton at the Pentagon starting out with the words "we had NO IDEA that helicopter would be there at that time..."

The FAA should have confirmed that flight 808 within in moments of reviewing the radar tapes instead of saying "nothing unusual on radar". Guess that's what bugs me, the gov's too busy telling us what it isn't.

Saw this over at Hot Air and pretty much sums up why this has become a story....
It’s lots of fun to make fun of conspiracy freaks but…
It’s the reaction of the Feds that have made people uneasy – Here’s the time line:
1. We don’t know what it is, but it’s not a threat.
2. Maybe it’s a “private enthusiastâ€
3. Hey, we’re going to go ahead and restrict air traffic the next day – even though nothing is going on.
4. Okay – we don’t know what it is, so maybe it is a threat.
5. We’re going to go ahead and take inventory of all of our missiles.
6. What? A blogger said that it’s a plane? He has pictures?
7. It’s a plane.
Gosh, I can’t imagine why no one believes them.

I heard on the radio news update today that a similar thing happened on the east coast yesterday. There was a similar sighting of a "missile" being launched over the Atlantic ocean. Did anyone else hear the same thing? It seems pretty hush-hush.

So....... it appears that our Government is LYING to us.....

I hate to be the chronic cynic, but seriously, an airplane?? Nope. I've been around airplanes the majority of my life. I ain't buying the "airplane" explanation.

And I've been around submarines. If COMSUBPAC says all their missiles are accounted for, well...

Believe me, I know about weapons accountability. That's about all I can say about that. Doesn't mean it didn't come from some other nation's sources.

Same here, but methinks the good General needs to be able to at least back up his claims or STFU. If he knows something but revealing it would also reveal classified information, he knows better than that--or SHOULD.

C'mon, guys. You know as well as I do that these folks are paid to speculate and to pontificate. Nothing more, nothing less. When this particular news item has run its course (I would've thought it did so 3-4 days ago, but apparently not), they'll find something else to pontificate about....
...whether or not they actually know anything about the subject matter at hand.
:whatever:

Did the media just let this drop over the weekend? I never heard any final answer on what it was. Did I miss it?

How plausible is this theory?
China flexed its military muscle Monday evening in the skies west of Los Angeles when a Chinese Navy Jin class ballistic missile nuclear submarine, deployed secretly from its underground home base on the south coast of Hainan island, launched an intercontinental ballistic missile from international waters off the southern California coast. WMR’s intelligence sources in Asia, including Japan, say the belief by the military commands in Asia and the intelligence services is that the Chinese decided to demonstrate to the United States its capabilities on the eve of the G-20 Summit in Seoul and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Tokyo, where President Obama is scheduled to attend during his ten-day trip to Asia.

Plausible, BUT, Catalina Island & the other islands around there should be covered by the 200 mile limit. So, I don't think that it would be in "International waters"....

If this story is accurate why would China even CARE if they were in international waters? I'm not convinced with any story, just seems a stinking shame that we've been given room by our own government to wonder at OUR capabilities. Or lack of.
-
Might as well have been Captain Ramius and the Red October conducting missile drills off the coast while his crew listens to our rock and roll.

Actually it's 12 miles from the coast then International waters. The 200 mile EEC (Econominc Exclusive Zone) does not ban warships, freight....etc. It bans fishing, minerals...etc .
I have delt a lot with the EEC here for fishing regulations.

L.A. contrail a missile launch? Retired general thinks so By JIM CASH Daily Inter Lake
Sliding silently under the mud, muck and fog of national politics, is a current event that makes Bill Clinton’s excursion into the world of elderly sex look tame in comparison. This time the nation’s national security is truly threatened in my opinion, and it involves not only a weak president with limited problem-solving ability, but leadership at the highest levels in the Pentagon as well. The American people would do well to demand a full investigation by an unbiased group, and let the chips fall where they may.
I am referring to the “missile shot†taken off the California coast recently, and the lame response by NORAD, the Pentagon and the White House itself.
First, in hope of adding some credibility to my assessment of what really happened just off the coast of Los Angeles let me convey a bit of my background which can be checked easily by going to Google and typing in my name. An Air Force biography will appear....
...Based on such, I understand very well the difference between an aircraft contrail and a missile launch contrail.
In my opinion, there is absolutely no doubt that what was captured on video off the coast of California was a missile launch, was clearly observed by NORAD, assessed by a four-star general within minutes, and passed to the president immediately. That is the way the system works, and heads fall if there is a failure. This is one of the most important tenets of national defense and its sole purpose of protecting the American people. Even the smallest failure in this system gets intense scrutiny at the highest level.

Nothing to see hear people....move along now!
When they have to call you crazy....you may well be right! The Chinese are showing us just how vulernable we are....hink of the panic if that ever got acknowledge in any substasive way! Most people will buy into the "jet contrail" theory just because they don't want to believe it was China!

Not sure if the government truly deals with things like "final statements". Those things generally pin down people and their conclusions and actually hold them accountable - and you know as well as I do that senior people in government don't want to be held accountable for much at all.
Bottom line is, the government has lied to the people before and will continue to lie. Whether it's a rocket contrail or jet contrail or a mixture of the two, it's doubtful we'll ever get the real story, especially as time passes.
-

Is one really necessary? Seriously, this is getting into conspiracy theory territory. Unless and until, folks.
-
Sparky, sorry, but I'm NOT buying the excuse that was given us...... seriously?? An airplane contrail?? nuh uh.....Nope. I also don't believe that OUR Navy would have fired anything off. As you've mentioned before...... accountability. Other than our Navy, there are no facilities to launch anything from the area it was allegedly launched from. Could this have been a home-made rocket launched from somebody's private vessel?? Maybe....... (I say that VERY hesitantly). It just seems to me that our Government is covering something up. Fact is: I haven't trusted our Government in a LONG time.
-
I hear ya Thor, last thing I want is to be catorgorized as a fool just because I don't have "proof" of anything. Hashing this over isn't a bad thing NHS, aren't you curious? And a little perturbed by the arrogance of the feds?
-

I agree with both you and Thor on this.
I wanted to post in here earlier, but wanted to see if any new material arose from this incident. Still nothing from our gubberment as to what it was? Something's fishy. They're either sweeping it under the rug or know what it was and do not want to "panic" the American people. Something's weird about it.
-
This is one of those incidents that will end up in the "stranger than..." sections of our history....probably not. Looks like there won't even BE a history. I just find it interesting that with today's news of the NK attack against SK and this episode of the "contrail" possibly from a Chinese source??? OK, call me a nut :whistling:

Rush agrees: It was a missile off the California coast
http://www.examiner.com/conservative-in-san-francisco/rush-agrees-it-was-a-missile-off-the-california-coast
In today's broadcast, conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh said that the contrail spotted off the California coast by a KCBS news helicopter was a missile. "I've talked to experts" he said. "It was a missile." The comment puts him in line with many who doubt the administration’s characterization of the contrail seen off the California coast as that of an airplane. In a previous article, we speculated that the contrail was a missile, fired by the Chinese in a show of strength (see story).

BTW stumbled across this, Chinese Jin Class ballastic missile sub, (I was reading on Nork nuke torpedos and mines(they'll blow themselves up)).

No, not really...we "allowed" the ChiComs the launch...how the frack else can we "gather" operational data of their systems.
Think about it - we can track every/any sub via satellite systems...
If it was not US launching that ICBM, it was the Bill Clinton Chink buddies and we had previous intelligence as to the fact.

Media Must Demand Answers About “Mystery Missileâ€
BY "SENATOR BOB" SMITH | JANUARY 25, 2011
I was the Chairman of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee for two years in the late 1990’s.
On November 8, 2010, while conducting normal news coverage in the skies of Los Angeles, California, a helicopter from a local station (KCBS-TV) filmed the trajectory of a “mystery missile.†What was this mysterious object flying through the sky? Nearly three months later, the public has still not been informed. Officially, the projectile remains a mystery. There was a brief flurry of requests for information from the local CBS affiliate and for three or four days a few stories were seen in the national news.
Then came the black hole.
No stories, no answers, no explanations, no briefings from our government or the military. Nothing. You would think it was a bottle rocket that was fired off in some kid’s back yard. There has been no explanation and no pursuit of the answers. If you Google “California missile firing ,†you will be hard pressed to find any story after November 16, 2010. Does anyone care to know the truth? Was it an airplane? A missile accident from the U.S. Navy? A Chinese missile fired inside our territorial waters? The “mainstream†media have dropped the story like the proverbial “hot potato.â€
President Obama, who promised us an “open and transparent†government, has again, refused to tell us anything and the media could care less about challenging him on this matter. He does not have to answer questions about his college transcripts or his birth, so why be bothered with a missile firing? The only thing transparent and obvious is the lack of concern for the truth and a doting Obama press who simply will not ask him what happened that day 35 miles off the California coast just northwest of Catalina Island. Let’s not let Congress off the hook either as the silence of most of its members is deafening on this issue. Where are the hearings, investigations and demands for answers from them?
Is the administration hiding something? Since we cannot get an “official†answer and since the press will not insist on the truth, we must try to construct the truth by reviewing a smattering of comments and conclusions from others who are willing to go on the record. The first of these comments that we must immediately disregard are the feeble, sheepish and laughable attempts by some to say that it was a jetliner that made this contrail.
