GFR "People, Let's Stop the War"
The entry bass line in The Stone's "Gimme Shelter"
Temptations "Ball of Confusion"

We have a running joke in my band..."Nobody wants to go home with the bass player". But truth be told, the bass guitar is an important part of rock music, usually, underappreciated.
So, what songs have the bass lines that really make you "feel"?
Here are some of my favourites....
Slowride - Foghat (Tony Stevens)
White Room - Cream (Jack Bruce)
Sunshine of Your Love - Cream (Jack Bruce)
White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane (Jack Casady)
Rain - The Beatles (Paul McCartney)
Money - Pink Floyd (Roger Waters)
(New aspiring bass player here! :-) )
It's My Life (The No Doubt version)
Most songs by Duran Duran
Shoot That Poison Arrow - ABC
Most songs from the disco era! (especially Nile Rogers) :hyper:
YYZ - Rush
-
Red Hot Chili Peppers(Flea)-Higher Ground
-
"Mob Clash"-The Effigies
-
I can't believe anyone hasn't said "My City is Gone" by the Pretenders, if only because it is probably the most recognised bass line in the land, thanks to Rush.
-
Just about anything by Tool.
-
Alice in Chains - Would
(talk about driving the song)

Lou Reed- Walk On The Wild Side
(understated yet ever present)
U2 - With Or Without You
(politics aside, good song with some nice bass)
On edit:
Elvis costello - pump it up

Just got started, lol.
No one mentioned John Paul Jones yet either. Including me. :thatsright:
Led Zeppelin - The Lemon Song

I love music threads! High fives for everyone. :-)

OTIS REDDING - The Dock of the Bay
That's Duck Dunn on the bass y'all.

Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith (Tom Hamilton?)
-
"The Real Me" by John Entwistle The Who
"Lemon Song" John Paul Jones Led Zep (already mentioned)
"Helter Skelter" Paul McCartney Beatles
These bass lines do more than just "thump the beat in time", any asshole can do that. Those basslines are played like "Lead Guitar", they actually create a melody and "drive" the song.
I seriously don't know who's better, McCartney or Entwistle.

Just about anything by Tool.
I won't listen to them until they get an article.

There was "Big Bottom" by Spinal Tap...All three guys played the bass there.
Rick Danko of The Band, IMHO, was one of the best bass players in music. Listen to their version of "Don't Do It" on The Last Waltz. Those opening lines are amazing. I love it when the rhythm section does more than just keep the beat. Rick Danko and Levon Helm (drums)played some intricate stuff together.

Don't worry badcat, my son just told me he wants to play bass.

Be sure you tell him..."Nobody wants to go home with the bass player".
Isn't Huckabee a bass player?
-
Kind of all part of my master plan :-) Thank goodness he hasn't discovered girls. yet.

Every bass player worth his/her salt should know this song.
