I used Cat Medicine for a medical problem today...

I used Cat Medicine for a medical problem today..,

I have been experiencing a horrible earache the past two days. This morning I went to see a doctor who prescribed two medications, an antibiotic mixed with hydrocortisone and liquid pain medication for the excruciating pain in my ear.

All was okay until I took the prescription to a pharmacy. The first one (antibiotic) cost $35 and the pain medication was a mind blowing $179.00 for a half ounce of ear drops!  I bought the first prescription, but I told the pharmacist I would not pay the $179 for the pain medication. He said the reason it was so expensive was because it was 'reformulated' by the manufacturer. 'Reformulation' is just another term used to hide the fact that greedy & soulless drug manufacturers take drugs that have been around for decades, or even centuries, and mix it with something else just so they call it a 'new' medicine, even though their 'new' medicine is no better than drugs that have been around for a lifetime.

Even though my ear pain was so severe it felt like a hot ice pick was stabbing me in my eardrum I refused to be victimized by a corrupt drug manufacturer. I remembered I still had liquid pain medication left over from having one of my cats spayed last year. So as soon as I got home I put several drops of cat pain medicine in my ear, and now 10 minutes later the pain has subsided by at least 70%.

Have any of you resorted to doing similar things to avoid being screwed by a pharmacy and/or drug manufacturer?  I could have paid the $179 because I had money in the bank, but I'm *******ed tired of being ripped off by what I consider to be criminal corporations. I suppose if a CEO stands over a huge vat of drugs being processed and pisses in it that would be considered a 'reformulation' according to the laws written by their corrupt lobbyists or political prostitutes. Drug companies do this all the time to extend old patents or to get new patents, even though the drugs discovered 100 years ago are just as effective as their 'new' formulations.

Since I started writing this article the level of pain in my ear has subsided by over 90%! I'm quite sure the same narcotic used in my cat's pain medication was also in that $179 medication. I feel dramatically better physically, and I also feel like I wasn't gang raped by a lot of sociopathic corporate executes trying to shake me down for $179 for something that cost them ten cents.

We could have affordable health care for every American if we eliminated the massive profits made by totally unnecessary insurance companies and limited the profits by corrupt drug manufacturers. Drug manufacturers spend more money advertising drugs, than they do on research. And we the people pay for every dime.

BTW, the only side effect of taking cat medication to treat my severe pain was hacking up a furrball. (Okay, I was just kidding about the furrball.)

The year-old food in the back of my refrigerator is just as good as the overpriced fresh food at the grocery store.  Honest. ::)

I can't wait for the follow-up.

6. If it's not too personal, can you get your meds through the VA?

It won't help everyone else, but if you're eligible, it might help you.

12. I'm not sure, but my situation was one of protest, rather than just saving money.

The nearest VA hospital is 40 minutes away so it wasnt as convent as going to a local clinic or local pharmacy.

Now, one of the guys I grew up with in the sandhills of Nebraska is a vet, and he swears that for the most part the antibiotics used on pets, and most other meds are the exact same as those used for people. You pay expensive prices simply because it is made for people.

Antibiotics for people are fairly cheap. Publix hands out the most common ones for free.

Aside from the whole cat vs. human issue, isn't there a difference between a topical pain med and an oral pain med.

I'm assuming the cat had oral pain meds, when she was spayed.  This guy put that in his ear?

While I understand his point, I also think it's kind of cool to discover a cheap, easy remedy that works. After all, aren't we supposed to be excited about denying Big Pharma more cash? Personally, I would be. I couldn't afford medical treatment for a minor (but annoying) condition myself a while back, so I found a $2 natural cure that worked perfectly. This did not upset me. I was pleased.

Welcome to CC.

I think most people both conservative and liberal would be pleased about saving money, but I think most conservatives would be happy because they kept their own money, not because they denied someone else some money.

I don't know about cats, but many prescriptions given to dogs are the same as given to humans. Not the same dosage though. I wouldn't chance it. If I couldn't afford the antibiotics, I would ask my doc to prescribe something else. I was able to take my baby's ear drops for my ear infection, and they were only like $15. Of course, I called her doc and asked if I could. I am not stupid. Jeez.

I do know that meds given to my dog were the exact same meds my husband had before. Keflex. It was the same dosage too. I asked the vet, and he said it was the same. Still, I would never chance it.

My other dog took the same meds that would be given to a human with her condition. Lasix and Enalaprin (I think). Not the same dosage since she was small. My aunt's dog also took prozac or zanax. She took one once. Again, I would never ever do it. I'd simply ask the doc to prescribe me something I could afford.

It depends on the antibiotic. Sometimes I can get my baby's for $10. Others can cost close to $100 with insurance. It depends on the med. Even with generic.

While I disagree with this, I think I do have some understanding of why you might say it. I have never been a fan of the drug culture that often gets mixed up with the left myself. Like you apparently do, I also find it quite selfish and off-putting for people to make a big portion of their lives revolve around getting high on drugs. Frequent drug users are often very hedonistic, and I'm no big fan of hedonism. In moderation, some fun is fine, but building a lifestyle around whatever "feels good" is self-centered.

You just described the entire population of DU, AND a vast majority of mindless Liberal minions.
They ARE the Feel-Good culture. If they would think things through they would never vote for liberals.

Take for example all the women, Hispanic, and independents who voted for Obama in 2008, and then turned against the liberal agenda in 2010. You can fool thinking people once, but not twice. Its the non thinkers, "the feel good voters" who stayed loyal to the libs last Tuesday.

I think that is true for some but not all. People believe what they do for whatever reasons. Even if it makes no sense to anyone else. Even if many of those don't agree with whatever Democrat is running, they will vote Democrat because it is better than voting Republican. Same holds true for many Republicans. And both sides believe they are right.

I am not saying I fall into that catergory, but I don't believe all do it for the "feel good" reason. It is who they are.

Soleil, I'm sure that there are some as you describe but every single democrat that I know personally votes dem because they either want something for "free" (like those on DU..my brother's widow is an example) or thinks it makes them "better" because they "care" about the poor and downtrodden.  My good friend (whose husband works with my husband) is the "feel good" dem.  She agrees with me on just about everything but thinks she is a democrat. She does so because she thinks it makes her a better person. It's easy to vote to spend other peoples money. It's different when you have to spend your own. This last tax day she sent me a message and said she might have to vote Republican this year because her husband reached the "rich" threshold (according to Obama). She is a fair-weather Democrat.

Dunno about that BEG. I was at the poll to vote last Tuesday and there was this elderly gentleman that couldn't stand so the poll workers offered him a chair while he filled out his ballot. He announced in a loud voice that all he needed to do was fill in the straight dem box. Long story short, I had to help him out of his chair, and helped him back out to his taxi. That took a while since the guy couldn't walk too well. Turns out he was a Korean war vet, knew my dad and I went to school with his daughter and he remembered me. I remember he was always active in the church and community. He told me his daddy had voted dem and he had voted dem all his life. I offered to pay for the taxi and he wouldn't hear of it.

Old habits die hard I guess.

As I understand it, meds for animals don't always meet the same quality & purity standards as proscribed by the FDA for humans. Eupher's pretty knowledgeable on that stuff. Perhaps he can clarify.... In a pinch ( a major pinch) I would hesitantly use a med prescribed for an animal.

I thought the HELLCARE bill was passed to keep "all" costs down? Prescriptions/co-pays and premiums? ::) Did anyone else catch how many times the OP kept bringing out the fact that they wouldn't pay the 179 bucks because it was going to those "evil rich company"? Man, if I was in that much pain, I would the money for a pain medicine. But, then again, how times does a DUmmie actually think logically?

Gotta remember that these are people who would demand an epidural for a stubbed toe because the pain is so intense.

I know when my dog got an ear infection earlier this year, he was prescribed the exact same numbing drops as my son had had prescribed for his last ear infection.  I asked the vet if it was ok to just use the drops I already had, and she said, of course.  So, for some things it would seem animals and people get the same meds. I am less hesitant with meds that are not injested.

When we were discussing treating our dog for diabetes, the vet suggested that it may be cheaper to get insulin from a regular pharmacy because it would be cheaper than from their clinic. Sadly, we never had to do so.
