I just watched the first episode last night.  It was actually pretty good.  I think it was a good compromise between shambling zombies and sprinting zombies.

The first episode was a little slow in parts, trying to draw out emotions that I couldn't or wouldn't necessarily feel during a zombie Holocaust.

One thing I find it hard to get past in certain well worn sub-genres is I have to imagine it happening in a world where there are no zombie movies.

Imagine that, a world with no Fulci!

You know, one of the reasons I love zombies is they make the best metaphors of any movie monster so they make it easy to project insane political theories onto and so, last night while I was watching, I realized that zombies are completely intolerant bastards who want one thing and only one thing: They want you to be like they are.  They're dead, they want everyone to be dead.

Which brings up the point that these zombies appear to really be dead, it isn't some stupid virus turning modifying living people's behavior.

For the most part, I like my zombies to be dead an rotting and animated for no apparent reason.  There are a few exceptions, like Quarantine and the Resident Evil movies, but the RE movies star Milla Jovovich so they're going to be good no matter what.  Anyway, my point is, I loved all the guessing in the early Romero movies about what might be causing the Zombie Apocalypse, whether it was radiation from a satellite falling back to earth or simply the fact that Hell is full, nobody is ever quite sure.

The most likely explanation for any true Zombie Apocalypse, of course, is Plan 9 from Outer Space.  It's always Plan 9 from Outer Space.

I am watching the first episode tonight with hubby!  I love zombies!  Plus it gives me great tips for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.

P.S. Please tell me Dexter ends this season by roasting Lumen over a slow flame and eating her liver!  It is the only way I can watch Julia Stiles blink her way through so many more episodes! :bawl:

I love Julia Stiles.  I keep thinking this season should be called Ten Things I Hate About Dexter.

Plus Julia Stiles cares about the environment more than I do:

I hate her character as much as anyone, including Dexter and almost all of the show's audience.

That is absolutely all I am going to say on the subject of Lumen.  :-)

George Romero used all of his zombie movies as part social commentary.

I downloaded from iTunes the first episode of Walking Dead... quickly ordered the subscription and auto-downloading of each new episode, should be a great series  :cheersmate:

I am not a big zombie fan, but I am not a big vampire fan either, and I love True Blood.

The zombie movies I can recall actually liking were 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later.

OK, watched the first episode over the weekend.  2nd waiting on the DVR.  It pissed me off when the black dude wouldn't shoot his zombie wife.  JUST DO IT, STOP CRYING SHE'S A ZOMBIE is what I was yelling at the TV.  Anyway, good series, looking forward to show no. 2.

(To people who haven't seen it yet but plan to:  The above is not really a spoiler).

That bugged me too.  It was too artsy, and it was strung together with the deputy going to shoot the first zombie he met.  The other thing that bugs me is what I wrote before: Nobody, so far, has ever seen a freaking zombie movie.

Walking Dead is very entertaining; BUT (and you knew there had to be a 'but' when a sentence starts out this way!) why have the writers already invoked such a hideously overused subplot (romantic triangle) -- it's the second episode, for crying out loud!

And as for Dexter, Lumen definitely needs to be extinguished -- pun intended!  :-)

My husband and I discussed this.  We're both in agreement that if at any time either of us become a walking flesh-eater, we are to shoot the other in the head.  That my friends is what LOVE is all about.  Putting your significant other out of their misery.

Oh, absolutely!!! The lovely and talented wife and I long ago agreed to a tontine wherein we each swear to blast the living shit out of the other, should the other prove to be afflicted with "zombieism."

Of course, given the distrustful nature of being married to a psychotic, the beautiful wife insists I pass into slumber first, each night.

I think her and Dex should get married.  Maybe I should start an Internet Lumen fan club.

Some of you will notice that Dexter has been presented with a very interesting choice regarding Lumen:

1) He has the opportunity to satisfy the "Dark Passenger," while finally finding someone (living, mind you) who accepts him (remember, he's also introduced her to Harrisson) for who and what he is...

2) He can continue to try and keep her at arm's length, only to have her end up dead because of he wasn't willing to commit.

Yes, there were plenty of supposed plot-holes in the last episode, but I encourage you to remember Dexter's relationship with Harry, his brother AND Trinity.

Just when you think you've got it nailed, you probably don't.  :-)

That is one of my favorite things about the show.  That and even when I know Dex isn't really in any danger of being exposed I somehow feel he is.

This is why I think the whole "meteor hitting the earth" thing is a myth.  Obviously, the aliens who seeded us here wanted the dinosaurs dead so the released the dino-zombie plague, and when they get tired of us, it's Plan 9 from Outer Space all over again.

Saw last night's episode, and I'm getting a little bummed.

You'd think they'd keep somebody on lookout during the fish fry.

Whatever happened to the alarm system.

The "vatos" were protecting an old folks home? really?

And why didn't our heros steal another truck or two to escape Atlanta?????

I think Merrel gathered up some zombies and released them on the camp and THAT is why no alarms went off.  I can see the vatos doing that because Hispanic grandmas are almost as revered as Italian grandmas.  I wish there was some sort of time line though.  It drives me nuts that I have no idea how long he was in a coma after the apocalypse started (had to have been less than 5 days though with no water) and how long it took to get to Atlanta.  I hate his wife, she was a stupid whore slut on an episode of House that I just watched too.  Do you really start banging some guy after your hubby has been "dead" for all of a week or two?  I can't believe they only made 8 episodes for season 1.  WTF were they thinking!?!?

We don't know yet, Cactus.

Yeah, I dislike that wife, too.  Very trashy to bang another guy when your own husband is barely room temp.  And I hate her 80's style feathered bangs.   Anyway, that little blonde sister is now quite infected, and so they now have to separate her head.  No getting around it, no matter how much big sister wails.

During episode two, when they start chopping up the dead guy to use his guts for cammo, my husband was eating dinner.   :-)

Well, she's dead, but I expect the characters to collectively pick up the idiot ball and forget about her. These zombies don't come back so fast, so they might not think of it.

Actually, is it clear that those KILLED by zombies come back if not more or less devoured? The mother in ep. 1 was alive and then infected but not killed, then ran the fever which causes death and zombiehood.

So far the writers have stolen the old out-of-it-in-the-hospital gag while-the-zombie-apocalypse happened (28 Days Later, yeah, I know not zombies, but same setup as this plot device), the back-the-rolling-gate-truck-up-to-the-warehouse wheeze (Dawn of the Dead remake), and the cover-ourselves-in-zombie-gore-so-we-pass trick (the really awful House of the Dead II). And we're also getting way too much "informed attribute" stuff about the main character Grimes being a badass; show us, don't tell us. And they didn't telegraph that Merle was going to cut his hand off much, right, with that toolbox knocked over and conveniently placed? BUT, hey, it's zombies and at least we had a good old-fashioned zombie attack last episode at the end--things were getting way too comfortable in that camping ground.

I haven't read the comics so don't know what to expect, but considering the condition of some of the zombies we've seen (for example, bisected and still dragging itself by the arms in Ep 1), this has to be considered true zombiehood, not infected humans even if it does start with a virus. And heck, there's precedent for that--the brain-eating  trioxin zombies of Return of the Living Dead movies aren't supernatural types but might as well be, and same for Resident Evil zombs.

Zombies!!

Quote
he Walking Dead has gotten terrific ratings for AMC and a quick renewal, as it heads into its season finale this weekend. But now comes word of a curious overhaul behind the scenes.

Deadline is reporting that executive producer Frank Darabont has let go of the show's entire writing staff, including his number 2, Charles H. Eglee (Dexter, The Shield). As Deadline notes, many shows have some writer changes in-between seasons, but it's unusual for such a major overhaul.

In addition, Deadline says they hear Darabont wants to go forward into Season 2 without a set writing staff, instead assigning all scripts he doesn't write himself to freelancers. Deadline points out that Darabont fully wrote two episodes of the first season (and co-wrote or re-wrote the others) and that two of the others were written by non-staff writers, including Walking Dead comic book creator Robert Kirkman. They also note that Darabont would be using the same model employed by Torchwood, which has several writers working on episodes for the upcoming re-launch on Starz (including Buffy's Jane Espenson), but no full time writing staff.

One hurdle for Darabont to do this however may come in the form of the Writer's Guild. Torchwood -- which just added another Buffy alum, Kelly Manners, as a producer -- is coproduced by the BBC, who got the okay from the Writer's Guild to continue with their UK template.

The most important thing about that story for me was finding out Torchwood was going to be on Starz.

I hope it emulates Children of Earth and not the first two mediocre-to-horrible seasons.

I'm waiting for Torchwood, and Doctor Who.  I wish the British followed the American TV way of doing series.  Then again, they would cancel more shows quicker if they did.

Are we all on the same page? I finally saw ep. 6.

Ep 5 established that if you're bitten by a zombie and so savaged that you die, you do come back as a zomb. Ok.

Ep 6 gave us a little neuroscience. Fine, but I am expecting some kind of explanation of how things that are, say, cut in half, are still able to move. I mean, don't the bodies count at some point if we're talking about an infection? And are they digesting what they eat, or will they starve? Romero was smart to make his zombs supernatural--God did it--because then anything goes. I never asked these questions about the trioxin zombs of the Return of the Living Dead movies, or Resident Evil virus zombs. But I expect more from a multi-hour investment of time like this.

I am glad that Ep 6 left us not knowing if it even IS a disease, despite the fact that we have an appparent disease-like epidemiology to point to--a fever. But Jenner said he hadn't a clue. But wait--if that's so, then what were the blood tests about? What was he testing for if they're clueless? And what did he whisper to Grimes? Maybe someone in the group is going to zomb-out on us? Or maybe he saw Shane's little attempted rape on a camera?

There are a lot of things you have to just let go in this series.  There are too many things that won't make sense and will drive you nuts if you let them.
