The Shining
Wow, that movie still creeps me out. I watched it as a child (why my parents allowed me to watch, I'll never know. They likely didn't know I watched), and it freaked me out bad then, but when I got older and understood it better, it freaked me out even more.
Yours?

I saw the first two. Torture movies aren't my thing. You like Hostel?

Haven't seen that one. Not sure I've heard of it. Is it an older or newer one?

I hate scary movies. HATE them.
I saw the original The Fly when I was in elementary school home sick with the Hong Kong Flu. I saw The Shining when I was in my late 20's. That is all. Between that, Night Fright, and the Twilight Zone I am done.

Haha!! I love them for some reason. I like to be scared. Not for real scared, but that scared you get when watching scary movies.
I watched The Exorcist when I was 19 or so. I loved it. I would've loved it more probably before I new a little about special effects, and I didn't find it as scary as I had heard it was, but I still loved it.
I watched the Haunting series on Discovery Channel, and I loved it. A Haunting in Connecticut was my fave. Now that was freaky.

Look. Earlier today I googled snakes, because of that other thread, and I will probably have bad dreams. :???:
The only things I get scared about are all in my head. Those movies get into my brain and I can't shake em.

Poltergeist. Still scares the shit out of me.

Oh hell. I forgot about that one. Bad dreams in store for me tonight for sure.

I like a lot of scary movies. I guess one of the best newer ones was Drag Me To Hell.
I also really like that Hammer Dracula film where Drac is the CEO of some evil big 1970s corporation.
-
The Birds
I was like 6 at the time so it scared the ever lovin snot outta me.
-
The last scary movie to really affect me was "The Orphanage." Spanish subtitles. At one point, I actually clutched at my husband like a teenage flaky girl. Quite unlike me. Very creepy, and haunted me for days.

I have that movie, but we haven't watched it yet.

Sounds like one I need to watch. Is it abused kids or kids being abusive?
-
I like the corny ones.. Near Dark, From Dusk til Dawn.. Funny I think. I cannot watch real scary ones any more. I get real bad nightmares.

You know, if I recall, it's not so cut and dried. Thundley, I can't believe you have that and haven't watched it yet. Next stormy night!

I'm gonna go with one more contemporary....."The Exorcist"
And two film noire oldies:
....."The Haunting" (the original version circa 1959, from the book "The Haunting of Hill House"
....."The Hounds of the Baskervilles".......a Conan Doyle classic, with Basil Rathbone
Honorable mention goes to "Nosferatu, the Vampyre" (silent version circa about 1925)

I don't do slice and dice flicks.
Scariest is without a doubt, The Exorcist. Close second is Helter Skelter.
