New Delhi: The White House will, of course, stay in Washington but the heart of the famous building will move to India when President Barack Obama lands in Mumbai on Saturday.
Communications set-up, nuclear button, a fleet of limousines and majority of the White House staff will be in India accompanying the President on this three-day visit that will cover Mumbai and Delhi.
He will also be protected by a fleet of 34 warships, including an aircraft carrier, which will patrol the sea lanes off the Mumbai coast during his two-day stay there beginning Saturday. The measure has been taken as Mumbai attack in 2008 took place from the sea.

You know, this is humiliating, that we have to do this, sending a whole flotilla.
One of my heroes has always been Lord Palmerston, who during the 1850s could cow the entire nation of Greece by just sending out something little larger than a row-boat.
My, how we have fallen.
-
why would the premier citizen of the world need such protection? only george bush would need . . .
-
I wonder if this fleet of ships is part of the $200M/day costs of the trip?
-
If the flotilla is used to make sure he stays over there and wage war against India if they try to send him back...I'm OK with that.
Sorry, to/for India, they're decent chaps and all but the US needs a little "me time".
-
And they're worried about coconuts falling from the trees that might kill someone too....
-
Jesus F. Christ. 200 million a day. Un-****ing-believable.
-
Apparently, the people of India know of this teleconferencing thing as well. And shame on him for messing up their party.

As if Obama would care about inconveniencing millions of people.
-
The really interesting thing about this whole fiasco is that despite all the naval redeployment, huge cost, inconvenience to the locals, and massive entourage, the purpose for the trip is really quite vague. I can't find much concrete on it that boils down to more than a sightseeing trip through Asia, with no particular reason for the three days in India at all other than to reassure them we aren't trying to poop on their heads while trying to be nice to China and Pakistan.
I think Hallmark sells cards for that kind of thing that run a lot less than a half-billion dollars. Of course we know from past Obama diplomatic triumphs (cough) that formal gifts to heads of state won't run up the bill very much.

Don't forget that TOTUS is going to speak to the Indian Parliament.
A tunnel will also be built for security. http://www.dnaindia.com/mumbai/report_tunnel-for-obama-near-mani-bhavan_1461946

A tunnel you say? That would explain Hillary's sudden interest in bricklaying.

You are correct!!! I thought the world would love him... ???
-
First off this is not only an extreme wast of resources but a slap in the face to the Indian Military and security forces.
Secondly...as I said in the SB...the GOP...if they were smart...would use this as proof positive that despite what the President tells the rest of us...even HE is terrified of the possibility of a Muslim terrorist attack.

Ouch. :-[

1 hr ago (09:00 PM)One helluva paranoid country and it's President seems just the same. I guess Indian security forces, Army, Navy, Air Force well capable of protecting any guest in our country. We have ensured Dalai Lama and many Tibetans have been safe for almost 50 years, inspite of threats from a super power like China also. The US is out stepping the limits of tolerances of Indian Hospitality and confidence in our armed forces competence.

I bet they're wishing they'd invited 'President' Clinton.
...The Secretary of State joined New Zealand Prime Minister John Phillip Key and New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray Stuart McCully for remarks Thursday at Wellington's Parliament Theatrette, and the Prime Minister made a little slip up.
"And we, in a purely bilateral basis, have concerns about the fact that Australia has an FTA," began Key. "They’re a very important part of our market in New Zealand, so we see Trans Pacific Partnership as a very important item to be completed if at all possible. So, President Clinton..."

Actually they are, from time to time they bite people who then have to have rabies shots. And no one would want to see Obama bitten by a rabid monkey surely? ;)
-
2 billion for an official visit....or invasion? Taking MO and the girls too, fitting in a little family vacay? Seems like an outrageous expense for something we really don't understand :-\
Oh well, starting to see 2012 from my house ;D
-

OFFICIALLY A CIRCUS AT THIS POINT
-
Glenn Beck is covering the trip to Mumbai. :)
-
Maybe he'll land on the aircraft carrier.....and take a swim off the fantail.

It isn't the monkeys themselves so much. It's just that the little bastards tend to throw shoes at the guy up on the podium. :P

Claim that Barack Obama's India visit will cost $200m a day is 'wildly inflated
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/nov/04/barack-obama-india-visit-cost-claim
White House spokesman dismisses claim made by Indian news outlet and seized on by rightwing US talkshow hosts
Hmmm a vast Right-wing conspiracy thingy again? Then how much is it going to cost???

40 airplanes, over 3,000 people, 33 warships and 1 aircraft carrier, all the rooms in a fancy hotel, plus a few more.....pretty soon we'll be talking real money here.

"Due to security concerns, we are unable to outline details associated with security procedures and costs, but it's safe to say these numbers are wildly inflated."
Okay, for security reasons they can keep it secret, for now. But after the trip is done, it should be available even if a FOIA request is needed.

Unbelievable with this red diaper doper baby. Unbelievable.
Glenn Beck had this covered on his show today. Blood was shooting out of my eyes.
-
This is sickening.
Congress needs to impose a "budget" for President vacations. Each term, the President should receive only $1M (including security) for vacation. Maybe less. I'm not sure how much security detail costs when you vacation WITHIN the United States.
There is no need for a President to take so many vacations.
This country is struggling. Our family hasn't had a vacation in over three years! Now we are expected to pay for this extravagant vacation? No thank you.

The Obama apologists all state that Lord Zero's "vacations" have all been "working vacations" and that they've been pretty short - usually over a weekend. I took a look at most of that and with few exceptions, it's true.
Then again, ANY president is on call 24/7. In reality, there is no such thing as a "vacation" when you're in that office.
That said, this Mumbai thing simply can't be defended. Even if the numbers are exaggerated, it's still beyond the pale.
Remember when GWB would just hop on AF1 and, without any fanfare whatsoever or announcement (due to security) he'd show up in Iraq and serve Thanksgiving dinner to the troops? Can you see Lord Zero doing that? That's the difference - GWB's excursions out of the country were not geared toward him, they were geared toward someone else.
-
The White House is denying both stories, but won't give any details.
-
Why does Obama need 34 warships for his Indian visit? 200 million sounds very conservative to me.
