For more than 60 years, the Kennedy family has remained at the forefront of American politics. But Tuesday's mid-term election marks the end of an era for the nation’s most famous political family.
The decision by Patrick Kennedy to step down from serving on the Santa Monica City Council means there will be no Kennedy in major office for the first time since JFK won a House of Representatives seat in Massachusetts in 1946.
Every year since then, at least one member of the family has either been in the White House or on Capitol Hill.
Patrick Kennedy is the son of the late ‘Lion of the Senate’ Edward Kennedy.
