Out in western Pennsylvania, the issue of abortion can strike a nerve. Democrats there often describe themselves economic liberals and social conservatives who favor gun rights and oppose abortion rights.
So, it was not unusual to see a woman stand near the end of Barack Obama’s town hall meeting in Johnstown, Penn., and offer a hurried, passionate plea for him to "stop these abortions."
The ability of politicians like Obama to thread the needle between their own support of abortion rights and their constituents' opposition can be deteminative in Pennsylvania. And Obama, who supports abortion rights, handled the questioner deftly.
"This is a very difficult issue, and I understand sort of the passions on both sides of the issue," he said. "I have two precious daughters — they are miracles."
But politicians must trust women to make the right decisions for themselves, he said.
"This is an example where good people can disagree," the Illinois senator said. "The question then is, are there areas that we can agree to that everybody can get behind? We can all agree that we want to reduce teen pregnancies. We can all agree that we want to make sure that adoption is a viable option."
The exchange appeared to be prompted by Obama's earlier comments that he does not favor abstinence-only education, but rather comprehensive sexual education that includes information on abstinence and birth control.
"Look, I got two daughters — 9 years old and 6 years old," he said. "I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby. I don't want them punished with an STD at age 16, so it doesn't make sense to not give them information."

So his children are "precious miracles" but any baby concieved accidentally (as he outlines in the bolded part above) is a "punishment"? :censored:
I have no quarrel with his approach. All parents should be so pro-active. But he's proposing the liberal view of abortions as a solution and condoms as candy.
I guess we know that if one of his daughters gets pregnant, he won't hesitate to relieve them of their "punishment". :whatever:
-
Typical lib...actions without consequences.
-
Hmmm. An STD can be cured without killing a baby.
-
^excellent point!
Well, there's always such a thing as keeping YOUR LEGS CLOSED. And a little thing called adoption.
-
sex without consequences is at the bottom of all of this, which is a pretty lousy reason to kill babies.
and, "I don't want them punished with a baby . . . " is a dirty liberal secret that I don't think he was
supposed to let out.
-
So this rich, smarmy asshole thinks his grandchildren would be a punishment.
swell
-
Typical liberal attitude...children are NOT blessings, they are punishments... ::) :mental: Well, to people as self-centered and selfish as the typical lib, this may be true. To the rest of us, kids are the greatest blessings possible...even the unplanned ones.

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Barack Obama is drawing gasps from pro-life advocates today over comments he made during a campaign stop in Pennsylvania over the weekend. The leading Democratic presidential candidate appeared to back a potential decision by his daughters to seek an abortion saying he wouldn't "punish" them with a baby.
Obama's comments came in the context of off-the-cuff remarks addressing the issue of AIDS. (see them here)
The candidate indicated he favored teaching both abstinence education as well as sexual education and he appeared to be hard-pressed to come up with something else to say when he brought up his daughters.
"When it comes specifically to HIV/AIDS, the most important prevention is education, which should include -- which should include abstinence education and teaching the children -- teaching children, you know, that sex is not something casual," he said.
"But it should also include -- it should also include other, you know, information about contraception because, look, I've got two daughters. 9 years old and 6 years old," he added.
"I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby," Obama said.
only a leftist would consider a child a punishment.

merged with DB's earlier thread in E2008. the lifenews link had a slightly different twist, but this is
essentially the same story.
