Title: Worst concert you've ever had the displeasure of going to?
Post by: soleil on October 31, 2010, 06:27:29 PM
I am going to say REO Speedwagon. UGH! It was awful, mainly because they are awful, but it was at the state fair a couple of years ago. My uncle bought tickets for everyone. Terrible. Terrible. Awful.

As much as I used to like Metallica, they are absolutely terrible live.  Lazy, sloppy, awful.  I wonder why people still go see them.

Bob Dylan is similar. I saw him twice. And both times, I couldn't understand A WORD he uttered. I know he's Bob Dylan, so that isn't too surprising, but he was not good live either.

Lessee . . . My wife and I saw the J. Geils Band the first year we were dating.  They were pretty good, but their opening act--a band whose name mercifully escapes me--was vomit-inducing.  They did a reggae version of John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" that was laughable in its sheer absurdity.

Best shows, OTOH . . . well, that should be another thread . . . but let's just say that Ballygrl and I would agree on who does the best. :-) :cheersmate: :hi5:

Reggae and John Denver? I think not!!  :rotf:

Yeah, I thought this may open up a best concert thread. I haven't been to a whole lot of concerts, but if someone does do a thread like that, I have a couple to contribute. Too bad I was born so late.  I am guessing the best concerts were before my time.

Trans Siberian Orchestra.  The music was good but they had speakers who just kept talking and talking and talking.  They were telling stories and stuff but it was sooooooooooo freaking boring!  Plus the seats were too close together and I felt trapped.

I've seen them twice. Once was enough. They were good, but once you've seen it, that is all you need. The lights were nice.

Concrete Blonde.  Saw em in 2003 or 04.  After one song, they went off on a anti-war tangent.  5 minutes into the rant, BF split.  Told me to find him at a pub down the street.  I told the couple we were with that he was out of there, and we all followed him down to the pub.  Didn't spend $20 a ticket to hear one song, and a rant.   :banghead:

RHCP here. They played 1 set and then broke camp. I think Kiedis had just banged a few balloons in their Texas leg and was too strung out to even stand up anymore.

My brother paid for tickets to some concert (Rush or U2) because Primus was the opening act.  Two shows before the scheduled concert, Primus bailed to do a solo tour and was replaced by Mr. Big. :evillaugh:

ZZ Top, back in 87, in Mannhiem Germany. They did one 45 minute set. No warm up band, no follow-ups. 45 and out.

WORST:  Anybody with the music turned up so freaking loud that you spend more time feeling the music than hearing it, which were several.

BEST:  Three Dog Night, this decade.  I was honestly impressed.

jimmy buffett.  the music was okay, but the parrotheads (or whatever they call themselves) were out of control.  I drink, and I have never seen so many drunks.  stoned drunks, passed out drunks, face down drunks, out of control drunks, lost drunks, drunker than drunk drunks, drunks that wouldn't shut up, drunks that were under arrest . . .

the line for the mens rooms went out the entrance and wound around the coliseum.  people were peeing in the sink.  there was no place available for the worst of the casualties to be sick.  I saw one guy that couldn't quite get the door closed on the stall, or get his 501s down.  he, um, sullied himself.  then he threw up on himself.  then he fell in the toilet.  his buddies rescued him before he drowned.

that was almost as bad as chicago during the peter cetera era. :-)  college.  it was a chick thing.  I almost went into a diabetic coma.

Worst for me was a Foreigner concert with April Wine as the opener. Apparently at the time, 1980 or so, April Wine really did a stand up OVER Foreigner so they, Foreigner didn't want April Wine to play before them in the Pocatello, ID Mini-Dome.
Needless to say, the concert was 1.5 hours LATE starting, and the PA portion of the sound system did not work. Band (Foreigner) played great, sound sucked very bad, including Urgent, and overall, it was like listening through a pocket AM radio.
No encore either...

Best I ever saw was 1979, Salt Palace, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Thin Lizzy FRACKING ROCKED!!!111... opening for Styx Pieces of Eight tour. Both were in their prime and James (JY) Young, the Great White Hope was beyond belief. Then Tommy Shaw.... I was down in front about 30' back in front of Shaw...oh the memories...

The absolute WORST concert I've ever attended was a Foghat Concert with the Hounds ( local Virginia band) as the opener at Hampton Coliseum in 1978. Not only was it way too loud for the place, but there was some young woman that had WAY too much to drink, passed out in it, woke up again and started dancing around, throwing little pieces of puke on nearby people. It was so crowded, we could hardly get out of there. We left shortly after Foghat started. That pretty much soured me on concerts. Nowadays, I'd rather spend the $$ on a CD or several.

My boss's girlfriend at the time won tickets to a Randy Travis concert in 97. The son of a bitch phoned it in! There was absolutely NO enthusiasm on stage whatsoever. Rat bastard son of a bitch. But, at least she felt like she had something to make up for...

Slayer in 1995 - Brisbane.

They walked off after only a couple of songs because the crowd was "too violent".

Long story short - Don't mess with the riot squad. They have utterly no sense of humor at all.

I think it was 76? In Bakersfield CA. A little place, I'm a little foggy remembering those days. Blue Oyster Cult was blowing the roof of with to much noise and then for Godzilla they lit up pyrotechnics and almost burnt down the place! We had to be evacuated and everyone was suffering smoke inhalation!

1. Crosby, Stills & Nash at Ravinia just a couple of months in ago in Chicago...

They absolutely butchered most of their classics, including "Guinevere" and "Wooden Ships." Guys just can't hit those notes like they used to.

2. Bret Michaels and Lynyrd Skynyrd, again a couple of months ago at the World Music Theater in Chicago...

Bret really had no business being back on stage so soon after his illnesses, and Skynyrd was ok, but their crowd seriously didn't know when to say when.

Lesson learned: stop going to shows in Chicago

Worst: Only because of the venue, a bombed-out wreck of a place called the Metropol; in Berlin in 1984 or thereabouts. John Lee Hooker was playing. The crowd was generally behaved (except for the drunks and the shot-up heroin addicts). At one point in the gig, some drunk gently tossed a half-empty bottle of vodka up on the stage, which rolled around and came to rest against the bass drum.

Hooker turned over the solo he was playing to his guitar player, ended the tune, and berated the crowd for their stupidity.

No seats, filthy, absolutely run-down shithole of a venue.

Best: There are many, but the one I'll always remember was the celebration of life concert held in memory of Arnold Jacobs, preeminent tubist with the Chicago Symphony; in Chicago in December 1998. OH. MY. GOD. There have never been that many stellar brass players under one roof playing their balls off EVER.

And yes - some female brass players have BALLS. There were a few there, as I recall. Gail Williams, hornist with the CSO, for one.

ELVIS...didn't like him in the 50's, didn't like him in the 60's but finally got to where I could tolerate him in the 60's. The X-wife and her friends twisted my arm to get me to take them to one of his concerts. I was determened not to like it...damn good show. Some of the very best back up people I've ever seen. I liked it well enough to take them again a couple of years later....no problem.

What was that line in a song about Neil Young?? "A Southern man don't need him around, anyhow" ..... Young was OK with CSN, but after that, he was marginal....

Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama answer to Neil Young's Southern Man presumed knock to southern racism thus Skynyrd's associations thereof:

The worst was at a Day on the Green concert where I had the displeasure of hearing 415 and then Blubber(Lover) Boy attempt to do their own songs, but in such a way as to leave you guessing as to which songs they were.

Grand Funk Railroad.

The show was great, but because some people crashed the gates to get in, the cops tear gassed the place...and it was an indoor concert.

Guns n Roses in Arizona in '92.  Not only did Axl phone it in (skipping the tough vocal end of sweet child of mine completely LOL) he added insult to injury by anouncing he was proud that Arizona was the only state that did not honor MLK day.  This was an extreme crowd displeaser and he went on to do an extra annoying knocking on heavens door as droves left the area.
High High High Yeah Yeah Yeah in a smartass mocking nasal tone

I was EXTREMELY disappointed after seeing the original lineup absolutely kill in LA in the 80's.

As much bad press he has gotten and temper tantrum skipping gigs BS he is famous for when I met him at the Rainbow he was very cool.  I'm guessing he is bipolar.

WOW!
GFR huh? I would give my eye teeth to have seen them in their heyday. I had EVERY one of their albums and about 70% of them on CD. They still do a little touring but apparently Mark Farner just couldn't get along with them and quit for the last time - around 2002-2003 or so.
Back in 2005 or so, I was reading the local paper's web site and came across an article covering the local Linn County Fair. GFR played the night before to a sell-out crowd of 4,500! Trust me, 4,500 in Albany, OR Linn County is big.
WTF?!!! I never heard that GFR was here! The tickets were $15.00 to get in too!

Me?  Even though he's an effin' moonbat, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, August 11, 2003, Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia.  Three hours and 35 minutes, without a break.  27 songs.  One song that hadn't been played since 1986; one that hadn't been played since 1978.  In-effin'-credible.
