Are you ready for redistricting?
No matter what happens in the election next Tuesday, we can ensure large Democratic majorities for the next decade if we win the redistricting fight.
It's tempting for state governments to draw bi-partisan incumbent protection districts that heavily favor one party or the other. The result is Republican wackjobs in Congress who never face a competitive challenger. We need to draw out the worst Republican Congressmen and we need more districts that are competitive.
For example, in Illinois we could easily eliminate two Republican Congressmen by redrawing their incumbent-protection districts. Potentially three. That's one more reason why we need to win these races for Governor and state representative. When the election is over I'm going to start bugging Democratic leaders to draw a better map that puts Congress in Democratic control and eliminates the extremist zealots.

If you can't win on principles then cheat. :whatever:

Elbridge Gerry
1744-1814
Representing Massachusetts at the Continental Congress
by Ole Erekson, Engraver, c1876, Library of CongressBorn: Jul. 17, 1744
Birthplace: Marblehead, Mass.
Education: Graduate of Harvard College (Merchant)
Work: Member, General Court of Massachusetts, 1772; Elected to Massachusetts Legislature, 1773; Provincial Congress, 1774; Continental Congress, 1776-81, 1783-85; Envoy to France, 1797; Governor of Massachusetts, 1810, 1811; Vice President of the United States (with Madison), 1812
Died: November 23, 1814
Elbridge Gerry was born in Marblehead, Massachusetts, on July 17, 1744. He studied at Harvard to be a merchant, graduating in 1762. He was elected to the Massachusetts Legislature in 1773 and was selected to attend the Provincial Congress in 1774. He was then appointed to the Continental Congress, where he was engaged in committee work on commercial and naval concerns. He attended the Constitutional Convention in 1798 but was opposed to the new Federal Constitution, refusing to sign it. He was elected to the first two Congresses from Massachusetts and, in 1797, was one of several envoys sent to France. He was elected governor of Massachusetts in 1810 and 1811. He was much criticized for redistricting the state to the advantage of his own party (Democratic-Republican). That incident was the source of the term gerrymandering. In 1812 he was elected Vice President of the United States. He died in office, on November 23, 1814, at the age of 70.

Story I heard was that the resulting district looked like a salamander so they called it a Gerrymander but that was a long long time ago.

that's pretty retarded. you can't win the "redistricting fight" without carrying the state houses and governors mansions. and there is a tsunami coming.
and besides, they need to worry less about redistricting, and more about VRWC, Division of Control, reopening the internment camps, rounding their pale, pudgy, smelly carcasses up and making them disappear in the desert. :-)

That is what the dummies have to worry about. And of course the increased population in republican states and a decrease in democratic states. Texas should get another seat at least once the results of the census is done, and CA may loose one. Betting that some of the rust belt states are going to loose a seat each also. That means that redistricting will happen in all those states.

nay! may they live in terror right up until the second that we pull them naked and screaming from their houses (or basements) in the dead of night, and throw them in the cattle cars. ah, the sweet music to my ears it will be to hear them pleading for mercy, and the shrieks of their wimmins.

Redistricting is how Democrats have always dealt with defeat. Not exactly a light bulb moment here.
