Title: TV series theme songs
Post by: PatriotGame on October 28, 2010, 03:00:24 PM
With the remake of Hawaii Five-O on CBS and Euph's compilation of said theme song got me to thinking.
What are your top-5 favorite TV series theme songs and maybe a reason as to why - reminiscing, or being reminded to hurry up with washing the dishes or hurry to get off the toilet because your favorite show is on!

1: Hawaii Five-O original. Performed by the most successful instrumental band in American pop/rock history, The Ventures. The driving drum beat, the horns tempo - just makes you want to get up and dance. Jack Lord? I'm not teh gehy but he had the looks and demeanor to be reckoned with. Via my many travels throughout Hawaii while living in the Marshall Islands, I visited many of the iconic landmarks filmed in the series including the Punchbowl Crater Memorial Cemetery and the ʻIolani Palace. "Book `em Danno, murder-one"!

2: Cheers. I loved this series and have a ton of life-long defining events related to watching Cheers. From my days in college to Saturday evening living on Kwajalein to watching the cast's drunken post final episode appearance on Johnny Carson. While working for the SDC in the late 80's and early 90's, the gov sent me to several DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) computer schools in New Bedford, MA just outside of Boston. I always made at least one trip to the Bull and Finch Tavern, the outside picture of the Cheers bar across the street from the Boston Commons each trip. Drank a few expensive beers, bought the Cheers mug and t-shirts and left. The inside is way, way, way different than what you see on TV - very dark and small.

3: Hill Street Blues - don't know why but when that show was in its prime, it was must watch TV.

4: Star Trek TOS (The Old Series) - Hope for humanity - Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty et all. Spawned THE most popular and enduring TV and film Sci-Fi genera franchise period! Nuff said...

5: M*A*S*H (Suicide Is Painless). While Alan Alda turned into a metro-sexual girly man, the series found me with tears during many episodes. The final episode, aired in Feb 1983, was the most watched by viewer numbers in history and was ONLY surpassed by the 2010 Super Bowl but NOT by ratings or share, only number of people watching. Most tearful episode for me - Last episode of season 3, 1975, Colonel Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) is discharged and sent home. Last scene finds Radar announcing Colonel Blake's plane shot down over the Sea of Japan - there were no survivors.

Justice League (original theme and opening animation, not JLU, although JLU isn't bad. But JL is just awesome):

1. M*A*S*H*  Yeah, PG I stole it.  I LOVED that show.  Hawkeye reminded me of my dad, not with political view, but appearance, and his love for fun.  I have watched every episode more times than I can count.  RIP Colonel Blake.

2. Hill Street Blues.  Iconic show.  Everybody.  Be Safe Out There.

3.  Miami Vice.  Lord.  I was only allowed to go out one night a weekend when I lived at home.  I went out on Saturdays.  Fridays were for me, Don Johnson, and a pizza.

4.  All in the Family.  My Mom always said that my Granddad was the original Archie Bunker.

5.  China Beach~  Reflections, by Aretha Franklin.  I wanted to look like Dana Delany so bad.

Mmmm...Miami Vice - oh yes! Great choice and that song along with the visuals rocked! Same thing for me: At the time (1984) I was 24 and lived in a double wide with a high school party buddy. He worked for the INL nuke testing data center in Idaho Falls, ID and I worked for cable TV. Friday nights were ALWAYS beer, bong, TV, and pizza nights. Saturday was rock-n-roll bar nights. That lasted for two years until I figured out hanging on a telephone pole at 30' in a freezing blizzard stoned, was NOT a good career choice. So I dropped all of my old habits, moved to Pocatello, ID and enrolled in college.

1. The Night Stalker:TOS
2. Lost In Space the season they were flying through space
3. Battlestar Galactica:TOS
4. Twilight Zone
5. The 4400

I don't really know why I like any of those and I only chose the first ones in my mind.   I like a lot of TV show theme music.  Irwin Allen shows in the 1960s had a lot of great theme music.

Space:1999 and UFO just popped into my head too.  And Futurama.

Not a TV show, but 'Midnight Express' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Akyx5iu_z8Y&feature=player_embedded) has an awesome theme.  (I'm going to give myself away on this one :-) :tinfoil2:).

Great show. Great character acting. Simon Oakland's interactions with McGavin were priceless. And whoever the harried-investigating-cop-du-episode was was usually hyserical, too. Ruth McDevitt was fantastic as well. They were all great.

OMG!!

The memories I forgot so much about. The thing about my little brain, is I tie periods, high, and lows of my troubled then successful life, to these TV series and the theme songs. I loved every one of those shows. Ernest Borgnine in Airwolf almost didn't work for me but because of his and Tim Conway's legacy in McHale's Navy, I enjoyed the series no less.
LA Law along with Night Court and Cheers was a BIG part of NBC's "must see TV" Thursday evening viewing for several years.

Simon and Simon? C'mon...Rick and his burned-up truck? I vividly remember watching the last episode sitting in my quarters on Kwajalein with tears! CLASSIC!

Did they think LAS was too racy? Or were they Democrats? (Who might have thought seeing all those flags and such would be too patriotic).

Puzzled. I doubt they were Dems, and back then, most Dems weren't America-haters yet.

F-Troop was a favorite of mine. Ken Berry was silly but for my age at the time, I liked him. His post F-Troop casting on later Andy Griffith, then Mayberry, didn't really work for me.
F-Troop reminded me of Chuck Connors in Branded. Now that was classic and his "spitting" appearance in the movie Airplane was great!

The Addams Family? Another that stands apart! Iconic and John Astin was outrageous! You just do not find actors like that anymore!

If you can revisit it, it holds up fairly well.  It tells a fairly consistent story throughout the series. I watched it again when it was first released to DVD and then when I first had Dish network, they had a channel that showed old UFO episodes.

Originally, Space:1999 was going to be the second series of UFO when an attack caused the moon to be tossed out of earth's orbit.

I always liked The Rifleman theme song. Linked below is the opening and closing versions. It was the first TV theme song that I was aware of that they used through the entire show, in every scene, but with different arrangements for the mood of the particular scene. (Then POP! dad would kick me in the butt, tell me to "get back into the damn car", and Chuck died right before my eyes...sniff...)

CHiPS had that groovy disco theme happening.  Even if the show wasn't that great, the theme song was good.

I actually liked CHiPs as a little 8th grade chitlen. I hated Ponch, (Erik Estrada), thought he was a self-absorbed jerk. Fast-forward 25 years, every show he appears on, My Name is Earl especially, I have come to love his comedic genius! He really is a great guy and actor and his poking fun at his-self is beyond reproach!

The Banana Splits

I still hum this one sometimes, for no good reason.

Lost in Space--good chaotic/menacing music.

Perfect Strangers. Unbelievably schmaltzy music with cliched words, but I liked it.

Baretta. Stupid cop show, but hey, if Sammy Davis sings your opening theme, that theme is a good theme.

Original Spiderman Theme--YEAH!

Is he strong, listen bud, he's got radioactive blood...

Life is a great big hang up, wherever there's hangup, you'll find the spiderman!

Technically off topic, but the Ennio Morricone themes from the Spaghetti Westerns are classic

I loved watching that show when I was a kid, but looking back and watching some of them, I have to wonder if I wasn't suffering from some kind of temporary brain damage.

Here's a modern-day version of the Green Hornet Theme, performed by Mnozil Brass, a kick-ass brass ensemble out of Vienna, Austria.

BTW, the original Green Hornet theme was played by trumpeter Al Hirt:

From the TV show The Protectors starring Robert Vaughn as a Private Investigator in Europe. There are three versions here.

This one is my favorite one even though its not the whole song. It even has an intergalactic bounty hunter named Jago Fett signing it.

Believe it or not, but I have an arrangement of this one for Harmonium Brass. And yes, we're gonna perform it.

It was the 80s. Except for Ronald Reagan we were all brain damaged.

But you're right, they don't hold up. I'm not sure what it was, either. I liked Mr. Twinkacetti, though (and isn't it sad that I even remember that name?).

I think Wilbur's rather tired of cleaning up Mr. Ed's shit-skittles.

Enough already, Ed. You're done. We'll be re-doing violin bows from your mane, since you won't be needing it any more.  8)
