Australian scientists have investigated stem cells from deep inside the nose and learned more about the way the brain functions.
People with Parkinson's Disease and schizophrenia took part in the work at the National Centre for Adult Stem Cell Research at Griffith University in Queensland.
Scrapings taken inside the nose from the olfactory system we use to sense smell have been found to contain adult stem cells very similar to those inside the brain.
Professor Alan Mackay-Sim says there are very strong disease-specific differences in the biology of these cells and they must be reflecting what is happening in the brain.

You'd want to be careful about pulling out that hunk of green stuff out of your nose. It just might contain stem cells.

when I was a kid, my mother always warned me that I would "sneeze my brains out", but I thought she was just trying to scare me. :o :-)
