The storms tearing through the Chicago area have resulted in more than 125 canceled flights at O'Hare Airport, a ground delay of at least an hour at the airport, nearly 60,000 ComEd customers without power, and one report of a tornado touching down in the far south suburbs.
The high winds have caused a ban for some large semi trucks on the Indiana Toll Road. According to Indiana State Police, there was a ban Tuesday morning on semi tractor trailers pulling long doubles, triples, and oversized loads. Because of the high winds, these vehicles were prohibited from traveling on the Toll Road until further notice Tuesday morning. Any of these vehicles that were already on the Toll Road will have to pull into rest areas until it's been determined that they can continue their trips safely.
This is expected to be one of the most powerful storms to hit the area in quite some time, the city's Office of Emergency Management and Communications said.
Lake Michigan is also expected to experience significant waves and storm force winds of 48 knots or greater, according to OEMC.
"We're expecting sustained winds on the order of 35 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph throughout the afternoon," said Edward Fenelon, a weather service meteorologist in Romeoville, Ill. He said the storm's central pressure is equivalent to a Category 3 hurricane.

Winds in excess of 30 mph here in north-central Missouri.
Felt like it, too.
-
We just got tornado warnings for the area south of me.
-
It's pretty darned windy here. I think about 40 mph. We won't get much rain though. We need it some kinda bad.
-
Was pretty windy here yesterday. I guess it moved to the North. Beautiful day here in North Central Texas today!!
-
It's quite breezy here with gusts up to 30mph.

Look on the bright side.....all those windmills out there in the midwest....all that wind...all that free, green electricity....no power bill next month.
Whadda U mean it ain't free?

They gotta pay some poor bastard to scuttle up those windmills, up around 200 ft., and by the time you factor in the safety gear and the overtime and the union dues, there's a net loss.
Not much "green" to be had out here where the unions are king. :p

I read somewhere that a bunch of the midwest wind mills were taken down in California and moved to the midwest. And that they were worn out or broken when erected. It was all a government grant/assistance scam thingy.
I think Spain and Germany both have already shown that free wind energy ain't free or even cost effective.

Looks like the weather moved through here with no problems (at least in my neighborhood). The temperature went from 81° to 61° in a couple hours.
Whoops. Looks like I spoke too soon. More weather happening.
-
Ok, I lied. I think we are in for some hellacious weather. Tornado type weather. It is so weird outside. It is definitely windy, but it is sunny yet really black cloudy. And the rain is so freakin random right now. I can see some rain right down the road, but it is sunny right where I am. YAY! Tornado weather ::)

I've been in touch with my mom throughout the day. The Matriarch lives on the NW side of the city, and has made sure that everything's battened down.
I hear O'Hare and Midway are grounded.
Other than that, I can only pray that this is another of those situations where the forecast is worse than the eventual outcome.
This is one of those times where I welcome Tom Skilling's dulcet tones and educated opinions from here in La-la Land.

Wind started kicking up here (Cedar Rapids) last night about 2 am. Been blowing like a sonofabitch until about 4 pm, died down for now (if you can call 30 mph gusts died down) but will be picking up again around daybreak tomorrow.
Nice when the plant risk increases because of the wind and the possibility of power failures. Also nice when we can't pick equipment because the cranes can't operate.
Oh, and did I mention that my hotel room sounds like a freakin wind tunnel during the day?

We call 30 mph died down, down here. But sounds like the job and the sleeping sucks. Sorry bout that.

My family lives just south of Madison, WI. The high school I attended had its roof blown off this morning. They closed the school tomorrow so they could make repairs.
Las Vegas gets hammered with nasty winds some times. We've had gusts up to 50mph before. It will knock you off your feet.

I DID have a bad gas attack yesterday...........
-
It was up to 85 here today, with max winds around 50.....our latest round of heavy rain is down to a heavy sprinkle. Had tornadoes popping down all over the place. Wind warnings were all day. M drove over to Nashville this evening for an early meeting in the morning....should have taken him about 3 hours max. He called at 4.5 and was not quite there. Between the heavy rain and strong winds, then horrendous fog...he said it was a horrible drive over. He left here at 6 and called at 11:30 - he had just gotten to his hotel room....
I spent the afternoon and early evening working in the flower beds in between the rain drops and wind.
Sparky....Welcome to Iowa...30mph is in the normal range.
-
It's still fairly breezy here today.
-
Slow flurries later tonight.
Welcome to the frozen tundra.
-
You are all making me feel guilty for whining about how cold it is in Las Vegas. It's freeeeeeezing here.

Freezing? 24 degrees? No, try again.

Coinkidink! I live just NORTH of the Mad City. Cool.
Yeah. That wind has blown garbage cans, and other storage containers/debris all over our neighborhood. Political signs are everywhere, too. :lmao: I went out yesterday, and every single flag that was erected looked as if it was going to come off the pole, and fly away. I think we've gotten 50-60mph gusts the last 2 days. I can barely walk in this weather.

Yeah that's just too cold.
It dropped down to 46 degrees last night, which is really cold to us when it was just 60 degrees (at night) last week.
-
It's 42, still windy and overcast this morning.
-
Was down to 40° this morning and supposed to be down to 38 early tomorrow morning. Fairly chilly fr here i n Texas. Saw where parts of N Dakota & MN were getting snow, so I don't feel too bad :-)
-
Wind is still absolutely wicked here.
-
It's a little nipply here today, mid-40's and cold north winds. So no golf for me.

That's why you stay inside the casinos.............free drinks and the weather is perfect!

Sunny and in the mid 70's here this afternoon....and still windy. Unusually so for here. Supposed to be getting down in the low 30's tonight or tomorrow night, then warming up a bit again.
It should be cooler....I think we will end up going almost from AC to heat. The spiders have all made their webs up quite high this fall, and the wooly worms were extra wooly....not a good sign according to the "old-timers"...
