Can you remember an election in your lifetime as important as this one?
I remember 1972.
The Watergate story was already known but it had not flowered in the mainstream media. Many of us knew that Nixon was a crooked criminal and nothing we could say would change the minds of those intent on voting for him. Vietnam was ending but we just didn't know how it was going to end?
We supported McGovern because he was trying to tell the truth to people, about the war, Watergate, and other matters. But they said he was a "socialist", much too liberal to be President of the United States. He would make America weak. Never mind that he was a bomber pilot in WWII...
I thought that was an important election. So was the election in 1980 with Ronald Raygun. And the election of 2000 that put the Bush Jr into office.
But, our country had the potential to survive all those assholes, criminals, and incompetents. They were bad but we would make it.
Now, with this election, I am not so sure? I don't think we can survive another 4 or 8 years of Republican politics. This is an important election because it is about our survival as a nation. Perhaps never in the history of our country has your vote been as important as now.
That is how I see it.

This election could save the republic if the dems lose power.
If not it could be the final nail in the coffin.

11. Yes. Nothing has changed since 2000.
Or even since 2008 that would make this election more important, right?
The economy. Wall Street. The banks. Unemployment. Everything the same as in 2000. Check. Nothing has changed to make this election any different.
Horse manure, indeed.
Funny the dems have been in power for 3 years now and we are in this mess.
In 2000 the gop had been in power for 5 years and we had a budget surplus the economy was falling a bit after the technology bubble burst but, all in all it was a paradise compared to today.

1994.
But this one's different, 'cause I can vote in this one.

Well, I thought the presidential election of 2000 was critical.
And despite massive Democrat cheating, the good guy won.
It still ticks me off that I got to vote for George Bush only one time, but there was that Marquette University student up in Wisconsin who got to vote for Alphonse Capote Gore eight times, and suffered no consequences.
I have no doubt this happened all over the country, and is going to happen nine days hence.
America was fortunate the way 2000 turned out; as has been pointed out many times by many people, America dodged the bullet, much as we dodged the bullet in 1800, when Aaron Burr was a razor's edge away from winning the presidency that year.

Reagan was the first president I could vote for, I missed voting against Carter by 2 months.

And this means exactly WHAT?
In 1988, McGovern, using the money he had earned from his speeches, bought, renovated, and began running a 150-room inn in Stratford, Connecticut, with the goal of providing a hotel, restaurant and public conference facility. It went into bankruptcy in 1990 and closed the following year.
In 1992, he attributed part of the failure to the early 1990s recession, but also part to the cost of dealing with federal, state and local regulations that were passed with good intentions but made life difficult for small businesses, and to the cost of dealing with frivolous lawsuits.
McGovern wrote, "I ... wish that during the years I was in public office I had had this firsthand experience about the difficulties business people face every day."
DUH!
Never mind the fact it was HIM and his liberal asshole associates who caused a majority of the difficulties.
G.H.W.Bush was a fighter pilot in WWII, Ike was a General (and one of THE Generals) in WWII, Kennedy was a PT boat commander (unlike John F'n Kerry, who served in Vietnam), G.W.Bush was a fighter jet pilot. John McCain was a POW.
How far did that get them in the eyes of DUmmies?
The best president in US History was an actor who may have played a soldier in a movie.
The current one isn't even good at acting like a man, let alone a president.

Barry Goldwater...1964...I was 19 and to young to vote for him but I worked for his campaign in S.C..
....and there was a popular song on the radio about the politics of the day. The only line I can remember went like this.....
...and I'm looking for more in sixty four.
That line proved to be prophetic did it not.

In the five years I have been eligible to vote? No, I don't think there has ever been a more important election. Although, I don't believe I have been as politically "in tune" as I am nowdays. I've always had at least my pinky on the pulse, but I'm balls deep in the coverage now. Sometimes exasperating...

Ummm...how about the LAST time you asked this silly question two years ago?
Or in 2006?
Or 2004?
maybe 2002?
:whatever:

I first started voting in 1977. Virginia has their elections during "odd years", in other words, we vote for our state and local officials in the years that we are NOT voting for the federal officials.
I have voted every year in every election held in this state since 1977. My polling place has moved 3 times, my district has changed twice, but I still vote, every year. :-)

They are all important. Every.Single.Election.

Every election is important. If your town is having a stand alone election for dog catcher, you go, you vote.
This is America. Voting is the most important thing you can do as a citizen. Period.
Reflect on this picture:

They had a little help getting to this point. The founders of our country did not. Never forget that.

Yes it did. We have been fighting the War on Poverty ever since (and losing badly).

For those too young to remember the demagoguery that was Johnson

No wonder folk were hiding under their desks, HEY?

I was not quite as old but was a big Goldwater fan. The ads Johnson ran were misleading and untrue, in fact they remind me of the techniques used by Obama. Johnson was a DICK.
