Title: My failed election bouncy. :(
Post by: thundley4 on October 23, 2010, 02:37:30 PM
An elderly black gentleman came to my door this afternoon.  I picked up our young beagle pup as I went to answer the door.  The gentleman was nicely dressed and politely asked if I would be interested in reading the fliers he was passing out.  I saw that one of them said "Vote Democrat", so I told him that I wasn't interested. He thanked me for my time and said "have a nice day."  Tara was wagging her tail, and trying to get loose, and the guy commented on her being a cute little Beagle.

No nastiness, or harsh words were exchanged.

It's been fairly warm most days, just cool at night, so she still likes being outside. It was up near 80 degrees today, and she's been liking it.  We haven't had any rain to speak of since we got her, so I don't know how she'll act with that.

Hi,

Mine was not quite so nice.  I was walking into Walgreens today and a young man asked me if I would be interested in a subscription to the Lakeland Ledger.  Knowing it is owned by the New York Times and is totally biased and fabricated, I told him no way in hell.

During the 2004 election we moved from Tampa to Lakeland and had some time left on on Tampa subscription.  I then bought the Lakeland paper and twice I found identical articles in both papers from the Associated Press.  Only in the Lakeland paper those paragraphs favorable to Bush were edited out.  I did not renew any subscription when I saw that.

A few months later I got a call that they were interested in feedback on how to improve circulation.  I sent them a letter and got a call back from one of their senior editors.  I politely suggested to him that Polk County went 66% Bush and 33% Kerry and if they wanted to improve circulation they might want to consider appealing to their largest share of the market.   He said they were fair and balanced and then I pointed out to him the two AP articles I referenced.  I was never impolite, I was genuinely hoping to get the local paper to wake up.  He hung up on me, was not interested in real feedback.

Have not bought the paper once since then.

You know why Jehovah's witnesses don't celebrate Halloween?

They hate having people knocking on their doors bothering them.

I stopped taking The Charlotte Observer because every time Walter Williams had a "REALLY GOOD" column they would leave it out or substitute in last weeks column. ....and it was mostly a collection of AP and NYT lite stories.....common I think for a Knight-Ridder publication.

You know how you stop Jehovah Witnesses from coming to your house? tell them you're Catholic. We had Jehovah Witnesses come by years ago, they knocked on the door and nicely asked me if I wanted a pamphlet, I told them I wasn't interested and that I'm a practicing Catholic, they turned around and walked away and didn't say a word, we seen Jehovah Witnesses only a few times since then and everytime they walk right by our house, we think they flagged us LOL.

Read them online -- I am not a NY Times fan, but do scan it daily.

I would have invited him in, given him coffee, and sit down and ask him to tell you why he's doing what he's doing. Then I would have taken virtually every argument he would have given me and politely steered him toward the truth. No acrimony, no bashing, just simple logic, one in which a teacher would patiently let a student come about his own answer through figuring out the logic.

If he was as nice or as amiable as you portray, then he certainly would understand the direction we are coming from. Now, as more Libertarian than conservative, I may have more points of view that may be in line with his from a constitutional standpoint (that a conservative), but the overwhelming Democratic agenda is still light years different. The point is that you would have done two things:

1. You would have given him some real non-propaganda talking points to mull over, and...
2. You would have taken him off his route to keep other people from being taken in by a false message.

Now, if the guy were a TYPICAL modern democrat, he wouldn't have been "polite," but being elderly and black (and liberal), I would assume he spent some of his early adulthood during the transformation of civil rights. This is one area in which the republicans have, in the past, been WOEFULLY inept at properly asserting our position in the entire issue.

They don't come by my house much.  I guess it's that chalk outline, sprayed chicken blood, and scattered copies of the Watchtower that kinda scares them off.
