Why I'm sick of hearing about "protecting taxpayers".
There's a municipal election going on in Toronto, and local Conservative mayoral candidate Rob Ford is using the slogan of Protecting Taxpayers. All around the city, candidates for school trustee and city councillor, be they right-wing, "centrist", or even "liberal" are putting tax cuts, fiscal responsibility, and "respect for your tax dollars" at the top of their lists.
My former boss once told me that people are angry. Angry at being taxed too much and having their tax dollars mismanaged. Granted, the actual mismanagement of city funds is a valid complaint. But where is the outrage for people like my friend Katie?
Cue the violin in D-minor.
I met Katie (not her real name) in high school. We were never very close, but she attended meetings of our school's Gay-Straight Alliance, which I was the president of.
I could have sworn you were The King of the Fags, but go on.
We shared a similar taste in music
Who knew Julie Andrews was still so popular.
We'll tuck this next bit away for future reference:
and were both activists. She was incredibly bright, and was an aspiring actress
Uh-oh.
who appeared as an extra in a couple music videos.
And she's how old?
Were they R Kelly videos per chance?
Around the middle of grade 11, I noticed that I wasn't seeing Katie around much anymore. I figured she had transferred to another school in the area.
About a year and a half later, I ran into Katie at a mall downtown. We began talking, and I found out that she had been homeless for about six months,
16 and homeless or more like a runaway?
and had only found housing recently. She was only sixteen years old.
And if she was 16 at the mall encounter how old young was she when she was making music videos?
It came up when she was talking about needing to buy new shoes, but not having the money; six months of carrying her life around in a backpack had left holes in the soles of her shoes.
Something seems missing here, I wonder what it could be...
She didn't go into detail about how she became homeless,
No doubt.
and I didn't pry,
'cause you're a spineless liberal fag who is more concerned with emotions than solutions.
but she alluded to issues with her family, and having an alright, although atypical relationship with her mother, and none with her father. I believe her father either kicked her out, or she left because he was abusive.
Or she became a drug addict or got in trouble with the law or told her parents to ****-off.
I think about Katie, and everyone like her, whenever I get an election pamphlet that advocates tax cuts and "fiscal responsibility". Quite frankly, I have little sympathy for wealthy people who only care about their own interests, when homeless people - people like Katie - die on the streets every year during subzero winter nights. This election has become all about "tax dollars", while people ignore Toronto's most vulnerable residents.
Yes, well, there is only 1 golden goose and it can only shit shiny eggs so fast.
For Katie, there was a happy ending. She found stable housing and is working on finishing her high school diploma. She was one of the lucky ones, and it was only through publicly funded programs - the one that "taxpayers" are trying to cut, that she's where she is now. But why are people like her not considered relevant to "taxpayers"? Imagine if Katie was your friend, your granddaughter, your sister, or your niece.
Tell you what: root out all the fraud, waste and corruption in the programs you have now and prove to us you deserve more of our money. Otherwise private charities will continue to be superior to your bullshit.
"The moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; those who are in the shadows of life; the sick, the needy and the handicapped." - Senator Hubert H. Humphrey (D)
So says the party of abortion and Jack Kevorkian.

Nail, head, hammer.

...and the Nazi party had something along those same lines.

You have to wonder what kind of city this was that didn't have a Christian owned homeless shelter. If there is such a city... Or could it be that Katie dislikes Christians so much, she refused their help? ::) ::)

That or she didn't like following their rules anymore than her parent's.

This story has a bit of a rubber quality to it.
-
I'm the only kid out of my neighborhood that made it out and made something of myself. I guess I should feel sorry for the rest, but I can point out where they made decisions that led them to where they are, and a lot are dead, in jail, or on welfare. I think I'm more of the "You made you're bed now lay in it type" because of that.

I remember as a kid hearing about how people in the ghetto were "trapped" there and how they couldn't get out. I wondered if this place had a fence around it with guard towers and machines guns. I wondered why couldn't they just LEAVE.
I still do.
But I realize most, if not all, people are where they are because they want to be there, and there's nothing you, me, or the government can do to change that.

I grew up in Florida north of Pensacola. Pensacola Arms and Escambia Arms were about as ghettoish as you can get and both were surrounded by a fence with wire on the top except at the entrance point. I have a friend who owns a company that does a lot of landscaping work down there, and he takes workers wherever he can find them. He hired a seventeen year old kid out of Escambia Arms one day and found that the he was intelligent and willing to work, so he was trying to advance this kid up a bit. After about three weeks, the kid came in and quit. When my friend pressed him for a reason, the kid said he was being harassed in the hood for acting white. Who needs machine guns when everyone around you is against your success.
George Bush was absolutely right when he commented that not expecting people to stand on their own two feet because of their skin color was bigoted. Unfortunately, too many blacks believe they aren't capable without the government helping them.

Some people want or think they shouldn't have to work just be given anything they want

Jealousy and envy...seen it many times among the less successful blacks. And when you try to explain to them why they're down and the other black is up, it's because they're black...and/or you favor the other one more.
The democrats, with the help of Al and Jessie, have them well trained.

OK, I imagined it.
In MY family, we pitch in to help our own, and don't wait for Government to do it for us. We don't expect some stranger to foot the bill for us, we just suck it up and figure out how to re-prioritize our own finances to cover it.
The horrorz!!!!

Oh, I think I know "Katie" quite well: A know it all, spoiled-assed, knuckle-headed teenager who decided that following rules of the house was way too much trouble and she'd be better off on her own.
Been there, done that, twice.
The first time, said dumbass teenager managed to straighten himself out. The second time, younger dumbass teenager got to spend a little over a year in juvie with my full support and encouragement to have his ass locked up. It's amazing what being sober for a year and without freedom will do to the perspective of a know it all, spoiled-assed, knuckle-headed teenager. What's even more amazing is that his dumb ass is still alive and no longer hanging out with fellow dumbasses. He's now figuring out that "holy shit, mom and dad were right all along".
Reality is a cruel and hateful bitch and he'll be dancing with her for a long time.
See, DUmbass, he's family and we take care of each other. If you want to be an underage self destructive fool who knows better than everyone else then you get treated like one. If you continue said behavior, you get the iron bar Hilton to contemplate your mistakes. Had this fool managed to right himself under the umbrella of love and support from his family, his life would have been much different for the past two years. Since he didn't want to, he got the final option. It's tough, it's brutal, it causes a ton of pain, but it's necessary at times.
Sounds to me like "Katie" needed a bit of the final option and maybe she would have appreciated what she had. Instead, you want to whine and moan about how the taxpayers are no longer willing to finance stupidity.
Well, tough shit.
They're (we're) tired of it and it's time for the stupid to start being punished instead of coddled.

Iron Bar Hilton

As long as it's at Gitmo.

Katie sounds like an irresponsible waste of protoplasm who shit all over her free public education in the first place and now is benefitting from an endless series of taxpayer-funded do-overs.

How does one get elected president of such an organization? Are votes based on who is most fabulous? Most popular in the Phys. Ed. locker room between classes? Who bakes the bestest snickerdoodles in Home Economics?
Or in the case of a straight guy, is it the one who spends the most time "enjoying chillin' with his gay buds" and discussing who has the tightest buns on the varsity team? Goes shopping with them for Ricky Martin CDs. The one who's really willing to "get down with the struggle" over allowing guys to wear Donna Karan knockoffs to the Prom?
Just one of those jobs that make you go, "Hmmmm.'

So DAT makes an implied joke and 4 people repeat the joke only explicitly while practically repeating each other verbatim?
We gotta raise our standards, guys.

Well, the first thing I would do, is buy the poor girl a pair of shoes!
Second would be to offer her a place to live as long as she understood she must live by my rules and principals! No drugs, period! You will not dress as though you work down on skid row advertising blow jobs for 20 bucks!
Dinner is when "Toots" puts it on the table! If you ain't there, don't cry to me when you get hungry!
Doors are locked at midnight! Don't try to sneak in after that, or you might get shot!
I could go on, but you get the idea!
God helps those that help themselves! As long as you understand that, you are welcome in my home, and I will help you succeed in life. Otherwise, go whine to someone else!
It's just that simple, DUmbass! Why you idiots don't understand that, is beyond my comprehension!
ETA:
I almost forgot! You will go to school! If you decide your friends and skipping class is more important, don't bother coming home! This one is very important and will not be negotiated!!!
