What do you put on your resume when you just want a job to pay the bills until you are able to get your new business or career started?

I am serious. I have been out of work for a long time. After realizing that I will never get a regular full time job again because I'm over 50, I decided to take some classes that are aimed at a new career/ business I want to start. However, in the meantime, I need to bring in some money.

How do you compose your resume in such a situation so that it doesn't automatically go in the garbage? I am way overqualified and overeducated for the part time seasonal work I'm thinking of applying for.

Ideas?

No primitive's gone to this campfire, because the primitives avoid the "jobs" forum like the plague.

So, as a public service, since franksolich is a nice guy, one of the nicest guys one can ever hope to meet, I brought it over here for suggestions from decent and civilized people.

Simple: you don't. You look for a job that doesn't require a resume, such as fast food, pizza delivery or non-supervisory retail. Then you just fill out an application.

They just need to get off their dead asses and get out of their parents basement and go look for a job

On the off chance that Sanity Claus wanders over here, it is very simple.

A.  Determine how much money you need to net to pay your bills without feeling overly stretched.  It would help to create an actual budget at this point.  Look over your receipts, bank statements, and credit card statement to see where you actually spend your money and figure out how much you need, then factor in some buffer for wants.

B.  Do some math and figure out how many hours you need to work at various salaries to net the necessary amount of money.  For example, if you need $1,500, net, to meet your needs, then figure that you need to gross around $1,800 per month (15% to taxes, just an estimate here.  Find out your actual tax burden before this step).  That is $21,600 per year, or $415 per week.  That would be just over 40 hours per week at $10 an hour, 20 hours per week at $20 per hour, etc.

C.  Start applying for jobs that meet your minimum salary requirements.  Go to a temp agency or two and have them find openings for you.  Apply to basic retail and food service positions that don't have onerous requirements.

Jeez! You are so edumacated and qualified? Clue bat time. A PhD in Womyns Studies is not edumacated. I bet any employer would look at that and throw your resume in the trash so maybe it is best not to put that down.

Here is what works for me... whatever job I happen to apply for, I tend to put down those skills that I have accumulated over the years that will make me valuable to the employer. It seems to work well because I have been unemployed exactly 3 days since I turned 16. Also I will tell the employer that I have no problem starting at the minimum as long as there is opportunity to work my way up the chain. For a temp job, I will tell the employer that I will show up every day until the job ends unless I get another opportunity to go full time, either there or somewhere else. My last two temps jobs turned into full time employment that way.

Really?

He is "over educated/qualified" for part-time seasonal work?  Must not be too qualified since he's still unemployed.  Macy's wants me to come in for an interview next week for a seasonal position.  That's on top of my already full-time job.

These people are lazy.

I'm cranky.

I, myself have been out of work for a long time. Have sent out countless resumes and have been to 5 shops in person, filled out applications, brought along my resume for them to have and got the same old story, "Sorry, we're just not hiring right now".
SO,....I was paying the cashier at the Dodge/Chrysler dealership for some warranty work, and one of the managers overheard my conversation with her and he asked me if I wanted a job, filled out the application, had an interview the next day and another interview the following day after that. Did my first day today in my new career. Gotta do what you gotta do.

Good for you.

Here's the difference between a conservative and a DUmmie.

Conservatives says, "I need a job. Whatever you got, I'll do it."

DUmmies says, " I need a job. Here's what I want to do for so much money......and sign this for the unemployment office."

....and the DUmmie says, "How do you compose your resume in such a situation so that it doesn't automatically go in the garbage? I am way overqualified and overeducated for the part time seasonal work I'm thinking of applying for."

Go in there with the attitude that you're to good for their lowly job and the employer will most certainly agree with you.

True_blood, congrats on the new job!  Hope the first few days are going well.  You won't feel like a newb for long!

This wording also struck me:

I'm thinking of applying for."

Pretty high-handed for an unemployed dude.  I'm thinking of maybe considering deigning to fill out your dopey paperwork to give you the privilege of paying me for my precious, precious time and presence.

Congrats, T_B!   :hi5:   :cheersmate:

I heard someone whining about how he'd sent out 10 resumes and filled out 10 job applications, but still couldn't find a job.  Someone else asked him what happened at #11.

75% of the jobs I've had were word of mouth, no resumes required.  Just like you, I was "at the right place at the right time."

The rest were short term "fix 'em up, clean 'em up" types that may or may not have payed money, but I still got something I wanted or needed for my labor.

If you have that attitude, you don't/won't get any job on this planet, unless you're Donald Trump.

If you hear that from an prospective employer, it means you're too damned stupid to hold a shovel, much less use one.

Holy crap, I haven't looked in that forum for years.  On the first page of the forum, there are still posts from 2008.

You'd think with all the bitching that goes on in other forums about the economy & unemployment they might try & stumble upon a place where they can find jobs.  Not that the DUmp is where you'd really want to go looking.

I guess that there are a limited number of openings for a "Community Organizer".....Oops, I mean a "Community Organ Grinder".
